Today after working out at the new gym I decided to talk with the trainer about my goals. Long story short he eluded to the "fact" that I am too old (I'm 36) and don't have the genetics to build a muscular, lean body. Said I need to set realistic goals.
I thought I had set an attainable goal (not huge, Brad Pitt from Troy as an example). I could understand if I was wanting a bodybuilders body but just a muscular tone physique? I have been working out at home for 2 years and the results are o.k. but thought I would step it up and join a gym so I could up the intensity. Perhaps I am wasting my time? |

Go back to the gym get a barbell and smack him on his head......Look at Ron (bb1fit) here on the site. In his 50.s and competes....the trainer is full of crap-------------- As a quarter squatter was dominating the rack, I heard a conversation between an old powerlifter (easily in his 60\\'s) and what I would guess was his grandson (15-yrs old): Kid: \\"So, why does he stop so short on his squats? That looks weird to me.\\" Old PL\\'er: \\"He\\'s afraid if he squats deep, his vagina might touch the ground.\\" 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

What an asshole. After you hit him with the barbell kick him while he's on the floor

Thanks for the encouragement gentlemen!
I hate using a celeb as an example of what I wanna achieve. Makes me sound like a star struck school boy but unfortunately its the only way I can really describe what my goals are. This guys good intentioned advice has really planted a seed of doubt in my head. I wonder if BB1 is genetically gifted (as the trainer mentioned some people are) or if my goals are indeed attainable for the average fella'? Honestly, is my goal a realistic one or a pipe dream? |

Fire your trainer tortman. He's just plain wrong. If you're morbidly obese, you can still train to a good physique but you'll have a problem with loose skin. If you're just a little paunchy or heavy you can train your body with proper lifting , cardio and most importantly proper diet. BB1 is universally respected here for his mental and physical work ethic. I don't think he's particularly physically gifted. I'm certain though that he's a really smart guy who works hard. He may be an alien though. Ya never know.-------------- Stuck on dry land at the moment Charlie | |

Charlie,
Good to see you and Mutt are still around! Since I started frequenting the site again it appears that some of the long time members are no longer very active. Nice to see all the new members and their input is surely welcome. I was obese at one time. If you remember I (lost 70 pounds or so down to 170). Spent the next year keeping to myself and "bulking" although I will admit there were more triple cheeseburgers and fries mixed in than there should have been LOL! Got back up to 205 and obviously had more muscle mass but more fat than I aimed for was gained as well. Even at 205 I wasn't looking particularly fat so I am hoping after cutting I will be closer to my ultimate goal. 10 weeks in and have lost 8 pounds. Vascularity is slowly coming back and when I flex I can see the striations in my chest and back under the layer of fat which is surprising because I couldn't even see them when I was leaner. Figure I'll cut to 185 this go around and see if the year worth of bulking produced any visible results. If not then I'll be looking for some intense guidance on what to do to improve my results. |

Yeah, I'd urinate on that trainers shoes while laughing in his face... He should be fired.
One can make IMMENSE differences in physique no matter the age or physical condition with proper diet and training, anyone who's been around the fitness environment in one form or another for any length of time will have seen real examples of such. Don't let it discourage you, train hard, eat right, and you'll make that trainer eat his words... -------------- DEFENSE! - Bas Rutten |

The trainer is full of it man. Set small goals so you won't get discouraged and you will get there with time. I wish you the best and remember you aren't too old for anything until you tell yourself you are.

That trainer is an idiot! I agree.. look at bb1! He's got a GREAT body. Here is another example for you and he STARTED at 55!

Your trainer is doing something a lot of trainers do, using "limiting factors" as a cop out for the fact that he sucks as a trainer and can't get results.
Tell him he needs to find a new profession. He doesn't have the genetics to be a trainer. -------------- SQUAT MORE ~Jesse Marunde Mortal by birth. Strongman by the grace of god. Blood Guts Sweat Chalk |

============
Quoting from luvthemtorts: I wonder if BB1 is genetically gifted (as the trainer mentioned some people are) or if my goals are indeed attainable for the average fella'? ============= Ron may or may not be gifted, but he trains his ass off and he knows training and nutrition inside and out. That counts more than anything. I'm probably the saddest excuse for genetics out there (poor bone structure, injury prone, short muscle insertions) and I still bring home a gold medal from every competition I go to. I'm all for joining a gym, but it's because of people like this that I don't put any stock in "trainers". Continue doing what you are doing, the results will come. If you need help with your training, you can always ask here, or send me a personal message and I'll do what I can. -------------- SQUAT MORE ~Jesse Marunde Mortal by birth. I started when I was 36... and while I am not in "300" shape by any means, I am in better shape than I was five years ago. I dropped from about 30% bodyfat to now around 15 or so... I'm now 40 and going for 12%. Good luck torts... it's a great journey.. despite what some 'trainer' says.

Out of curiosity's sake, what gym was that guy working for? Some gym's have more strict standards for hiring trainers that others, and it sounds like this gym has very low standards. It's so disappointing to here stories about incompetant, unprofessional trainers. Velasca,
Goodness gracious girl! I would have to say that is one of the best transformations I have seen in that amount of time. FINE JOB!! Wasakat, The gym is run through our local Parks and Recreation so no worries of his fellow classmates being in a gym near you LOL. Since it is very small (40 members) I don't want to be singled out as the resident butt hole so I think I'll just kindly disregard his advice and continue with my FT programs. |

Tim,
You got a point there my friend. Perhaps I can discreetly mention it to the director. Just need to figure out how to word it without sounding like a whiny baby. "I just want to let you know your trainer told me I'm old and of inferior genetic quality. Now I'm gonna sue for the emotinal stress he caused me" I forgot to mention that the trainer himself is in his 50's. Isn't it funny he has the stuff to be buff at his age yet according to him I don't despite being 16 years younger. Maybe I'll ask him if he uses "gear" since us old folks don't have the necesary testosterone to get er' done naturally HEHEHE!! |

My dad was really heavy for many years (high 200's) and he didn't start making changes til about his mid 30's. He did everything himself (no trainers) and he's in GREAT shape now. I know he's not gifted either as he is still working hard to stay where he is. I don't believe that you're ever too old to start making changes to your body. It might be easier when you're younger, but if you work hard enough at it, nothing's impossible.

Wow - coming late to the discussion but i just had to add - What a crock of shite. That trainer needs to get out of that gym and any other. Let's just tell people it is useless to try and achieve their full potential, geeze. WTF??
There are a lot of people with really excellent physiques who didn't even start working out until their 40's or 50's. Don't let what that idiot say discourage you - keep lifting, keep your diet clean and keep questioning anyone who wants to set limitations on what you can achieve. Asimmer,
Thanks for the input! Very encouraging and motivating. I haven't seen him since last Thursday so I wonder if he spread his "pearls of wisdom" to the wrong person. |
