I work out for a healthier body and mind. And the fact that I can't stand to be out of shape. You know like when you go running with your kids and 4 miles later they're still running circles around you just to come home and challenge you to a game of Dance, Dance Revolution on XBox. I don't think so!!! They will never out run mom...lol!-------------- Bettia.... The secret of getting ahead is getting started. ravenbeauty@freetrainers.com |

Here you go menace....
100 Reasons to Exercise in the New Millennium by James A. Peterson, Ph.D., FACSM Cedric X. Bryant, Ph.D., FACSM Jerry Napp, M.S. Individuals typically adopt either a "make-do" or a "can-do" attitude towards health. Those who take a "make-do" approach generally live without concern for the consequences of their actions. Those with a "can-do" attitude are aware that, aside from genetics, health is a byproduct of the choices that a person makes. Considerable evidence supports the fact that individuals who make sound, health-related decisions concerning their personal behavior (e.g., eat sensibly, exercise regularly, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, don't smoke) have a much higher quality of health. Because exercise enhances almost every aspect of a person's life, exercising on a regular basis is certainly one of the wisest choices a person can make. The following list of 100 proven benefits of exercise clearly illustrates the positive effects of sound exercise: 1. Reduces your risk of getting heart disease. 2. Increases your level of muscle strength. 3. Improves the functioning of your immune system. 4. Enhances sexual desire, performance, and satisfaction. 5. Helps you to more effectively manage stress. 6. Helps you to lose weight - especially fat weight. 7. Improves the likelihood of survival from a myocardial infarction (heart attack). 8. Can help relieve the pain of tension headaches - perhaps the most common type of headache. 9. Improves your body's ability to use fat for energy during physical activity. 10. Increases the density and breaking strength of bones. 11. Helps to preserve lean body tissue. 12. Reduces the risk of developing hypertension (high blood pressure). 13. Increases the density and breaking strength of ligaments and tendons. 14. Improves coronary (heart) circulation. 15. Increases circulating levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. 16. Assists in efforts to stop smoking. 17. Reduces your risk of developing type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. 18. Can help improve short-term memory in older individuals. 19. Helps to maintain weight loss - unlike dieting, alone. 20. Helps relieve many of the common discomforts of pregnancy (backache, heartburn, constipation, etc.). 21. Reduces your anxiety level. 22. Helps control blood pressure in people with hypertension. 23. Reduces the viscosity of your blood. 24. Reduces vulnerability to various cardiac dysrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms). 25. Increases your maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max-perhaps the best measure of your physical working capacity). 26. Helps to overcome jet lag. 27. Slows the rate of joint degeneration in people with osteoarthritis. 28. Lowers your resting heart rate. 29. Helps to boost creativity. 30. Reduces circulating levels of triglycerides. 31. Helps the body resist upper respiratory tract infections. 32. Increases your anaerobic threshold, allowing you to work or exercise longer at a higher level, before a significant amount of lactic acid builds up. 33. Reduces medical and healthcare expenses. 34. Improves ability to recover from physical exertion. 35. Helps speed recovery from chemotherapy treatments. 36. Increases ability to supply blood to the skin for cooling. 37. Increases the thickness of the cartilage in your joints. 38. Gives you more energy to meet the demands of daily life, and provides you with a reserve to meet the demands of unexpected emergencies. 39. Increases your level of muscle endurance. 40. Helps you sleep easier and better. 41. Improves posture. 42. Improves athletic performance. 43. Helps you to maintain your resting metabolic rate. 44. Reduces the risk of developing colon cancer. 45. Increases your tissues' responsiveness to the actions of insulin (i.e., improves tissue sensitivity for insulin) helping to better control blood sugar, particularly if you are a Type II diabetic. 46. Helps to relieve constipation. 47. Expands blood plasma volume. 48. Reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer. 49. Helps to combat substance abuse. 50. Helps to alleviate depression. 51. Increases your ability to adapt to cold environments. 52. Helps you maintain proper muscle balance. 53. Reduces the rate and severity of medical complications associated with hypertension. 54. Helps to alleviate certain menstrual symptoms. 55. Lowers your heart rate response to submaximal physical exertion. 56. Helps to alleviate low-back pain. 57. Helps to reduce the amount of insulin required to control blood sugar levels in type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics. 58. Improves mental alertness. 59. Improves respiratory muscle strength and muscle endurance - particularly important for asthmatics. 60. Reduces your risk of having a stroke. 61. Helps you to burn excess calories. 62. Increases your cardiac reserve. 63. Improves your physical appearance. 64. Offsets some of the negative side effects of certain antihypertensive drugs. 65. Increases your stroke volume (the amount of blood the heart pumps with each beat). 66. Improves your self-esteem. 67. Reduces your susceptibility for coronary thrombosis (a clot in an artery that supplies the heart with blood). 68. Helps you to relax. 69. Reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. 70. Improves mental cognition (a short-term effect only). 71. Maintains or improves joint flexibility. 72. Improves your glucose tolerance. 73. Reduces workdays missed due to illness. 74. Protects against "creeping obesity" (the slow, but steady weight gain that occurs as you age). 75. Enhances your muscles' abilities to extract oxygen from your blood. 76. Increases your productivity at work. 77. Reduces your likelihood of developing low-back problems. 78. Improves your balance and coordination. 79. Allows you to consume greater quantities of food and still maintain caloric balance. 80. Provides protection against injury. 81. Decreases (by 20 to 30 percent) the need for antihypertensive medication, if you are hypertensive. 82. Improves your decision-making abilities. 83. Helps reduce and prevent the immediate symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, sleep disturbances, irritability) and decrease the long-term risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and obesity. 84. Helps to relieve and prevent "migraine headache attacks." 85. Reduces the risk of endometriosis (a common cause of infertility). 86. Helps to retard bone loss as you age, thereby reducing your risk of developing osteoporosis. 87. Helps decrease your appetite (a short-term effect only). 88. Improves pain tolerance and mood if you suffer from osteoarthritis. 89. Helps prevent and relieve the stresses that cause carpal tunnel syndrome. 90. Makes your heart a more efficient pump. 91. Helps to decrease left ventricular hypertrophy (a thickening of the walls of the left ventricle) in people with hypertension. 92. Improves your mood 93. Helps to increase your overall health awareness. 94. Reduces the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. 95. Helps you to maintain an independent lifestyle. 96. Reduces the level of abdominal obesity - a significant health-risk factor. 97. Increases the diffusion capacity of the lungs, enhancing the exchange of oxygen from your lungs to your blood. 98. Improves heat tolerance. 99. Improves your overall quality of life. 100. Lifelong regular exercise may be protective against the development of Alzheimer's disease. LET REASON PREVAIL If logic and reason prevail, the new millennium will usher in a new attitude toward health and fitness. If you are among the 20 percent of Americans who exercise, this list of 100 reasons to exercise is designed to reinforce your resolve and commitment to remain physically active. If you're with the 80 percent of the adult population who do not exercise regularly, this list is designed to motivate and encourage you to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Exercising on a regular basis is the smart choice - the right choice in any millennium. James A. Peterson, Ph.D., is a sports medicine specialist residing in Monterey, California. Cedric X. Bryant, Ph.D., is senior vice president of research and development/sports medicine/technical service for StairMaster Sports/Medical Products, Inc., and Jerry Napp, M.S., is a territory sales manager for StairMaster. It does seem a shame that there is a "100 reasons to exercise" post, and a "101 reasons not to exercise" post in the pro board.

Great topic!
I workout for several reasons. I love the feeling after I complete a grueling workout, I like the way it makes me look and feel about myself in general, I like to set goals for myself and accomplish them, I forget about the stresses I may have in my life at the moment, it is MY time away from the house, helps me keep up with my 4 year old-more energy, I like the compliments and finally I know I am setting the right example for my anti-workout family, hopefully I can motivate some of them too! WOW! Talk about a run on sentence! Great topic! :) |

I started for health reasons but I like the results.I am stronger, healthier, with more energy and stamina. I see the same people at the gym and from the extremely small to the extremely large we are there for self improvement. Ask anyone that is knowledgable about the equipment and most will be happy to show you. Some will even work with you. As far as the attraction from the opposite sex.... well that is about confidence and if being musclar makes you confident, then...... I've never been big and muscular (always on the slim side at 6'1", 174) and still have ladies flirt with me at 59.
Weights before dates......... pain is my friend ........... I'll rest when I get home.... |

For my children...
I want to set a good example so they will live healthy lifestyles. I want to see them grow up and have families, and be part of their adult life as well as their younger years. For myself... I feel better about myself. I love that "high" you get after a hard workout, when you're drenched with sweat. For my husband... I want to look more attractive to him. I feel like having sex more...lol. |

It makes me feel good. Everytime I do something that I didn't know I could do I get a really satisfied feeling. I was never very athletic as a young person, so now that I'm lifting and running, I've surprised myself often. I just have to stay on the "pain train".

I workout because I can; just three years ago I couldn't even take a flight of stairs without being winded and sweating profusely. Now 190 pounds later (no surgery) I can take a flight of stairs without getting winded.
I love the way my body looks when I am in shape. I love the way I feel when I am in shape. I love that I can workout instead of eating a dozen Donuts. I workout because it’s a way of showing myself a kindness that will effect the rest of my life and the quality of my life. I know that I am going to get old but I want to age gracefully. I want when I get to seventy-seven years old, someone to mistake me for being fifty something. Cass |

some of them are :- Help you lose weight and reduce body fat · Improve your physical appearance · Increase your level of muscular strength and endurance · Maintain your resting metabolic rate to prevent weight gain · Increase your stamina and ability to do continuous work ============ Quoting from teflon93@aol.co: I was just thinking to my self why exactly do i work out. i set goals but i wasnt actually sure what the reason was but now i know that i do it for respect and for self respect knowing that i can achieve anything i try and i think people definitly respect some who is strong and takes care of there body i also work out because it gets chicks but i wanted to know the reason why you guys work out for. ============= |

1) For my health. As soon as I got out of grad school I promised myself I would use that extra time to concentrate on my health. As was said above I also started for health reasons but I like the overall results. I am stronger, healthier, with more energy and stamina.
2) I feel MUCH better about myself now, more confident. That all translates into a person that is happy and healthy. 3) Having some strength is also very helpful in day-to-day life. I have a desk job so I get no exercise unless I make time for it after work. Yard, house, car work is MUCH easier when you don't have to strain so hard to lift something. ;) 4) Finally, who here does not want to hear more compliments? Even if you work out for that alone look at all the benefits you’re giving your body! Not only are you going to look better, but also you will feel better and be healthier! It is a win-win-win situation. |

I work out for many reasons, it all started with beign diagnosed with LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) becuase I have (had) high tblood pressure and high cholesterol and was killing myself slowly (death by chili dog!), see raven's post (make-do attitude).
I have gone form 235 to 216 in 2 months due to cleaning up my diet and lifting (HIIT included) and have nto felt this good since after BAsic Training when I dropped a lot of weight too (there's a trend here). Also to freak out my Dr. at the next followup for my heart. After that si done and I have a clean bill of health I will start hitting it real hard and packing it on to be even healthier for my wife and 4 kids, if I died and left her alone with 4 kids she would never forgive me!!! Then there's the whole mow the yard with the shirt off thing, heh! -------------- CParrish73 --------------- Diets fail, its the lifestyle that counts!!! |

Well, it's not for the ladies because I've been happily married for 28 years. I have four main reasons:
1) Because it makes me feel better about myself when I do; 2) Because it is a fabulous stress reliever; 3) Because at age 58 I still can; and 4) Because at age 80 I hope I will still be able to. -------------- \"If we can change our thoughts, we can change the world.\" H.M. Tomlinson |

I like to workout because I am going into the marines after I graduate from highschool. I want to be in the best shape out of all the guys when I go in. I also workout so that I can be looking good for the ladies. I also like to play sports so I keep in shape for that also. It is just something about a gym and weights that feels right. It feels like its where I belong. I am only 16 years old but I just love to lift weights!!!!!:dumbbell:-------------- Age: 16, Weight: 190, Height: 6 foot 3 inches, Bodyfat: 15%, Bench: 260, Squat: 330, Pullups: 16, Dips: 36 |

the biggest reason for me is, competition. I'm probably the strongest in my group at school, and alot stronger then alot of other people at school, the closest competition to me is me best friend, hes 5-10 kilos less then me, we can do the same amount of weights, but i woop him when is comes to leg excercises (i do alot of kickboxing, martial arts and boxing), hes pretty rich, so hes got his own room full of excercise machines, hes got a 6-pak, but i got some pretty good lookin pecs, lol
errr, like i said, i do it to be better then my peers, not really to impresse women, but if that special 1 came along, of course i dont wanna look like crap -------------- You Only Get a One Chance to Make a First Impression |

Thx Wrestler. I have goofed around for many years adn used excuses to not workout and eat properly until I developed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a resulting start to a heart condition and finally took life and fitness seriously.
So I figured since my Dr. told me he could write me a Rx for meds or a Rx for a lifestyle change I'd take the lifestyle and this is the first thing that popped in my head to help with motivation. |

I work out so that I can look as good as those 19 year olds I see on the cover of MAXIM. And to attract the guys.......

I work out for the discipline of it all; the way people's eyes pop out when I tell them that I get up at 4:45 am to hit the gym. Other than that its great for me. I don't want to make the mistake of being stagnant in my phsycial fitness. After about ten years of working out I'm still a good 30 lbs lighter than when I started...
