You all have been there, wether at work or home or at a friends house. You know the, "why are you eating again?"
"you are going to hurt yourself lifting that much!" , Or my favorite, "you need to cut down the protein you eat, it is not good for you". So there you ae lifting hard, running(or other forms of cardio) and someone you know or come in contact with undermine your resolve. So hwat do you do? I think there are 2 ways to go....quit and make them right...or use that negativity as motivation. I know that I do the latter. Every time someone I know sasy something to short circuit my drvie I take that and replay it over and over as I lift. It is what gets me to that last rep and beyond, or do that last bit of the mile I am running. I do understand that they may be ashamed that they are not doing what we are doing. But do not let that stop you. It is hard enough, for me anyway, to get up each day and say, ok I am not going to eat outside of my diet and later tonight after I am tired from wokring all day I wll runn that mile or what ever I need. It is even harder for those of us with houses to keep and familys to be with as will. It is a fine balancing act, yet I and others like me get it done. I hate at tiems to read or hear the excuse, "I just do not have the time to eat or workout right". Like I do? I mean be realistic who does, yet in order to reach that goal you must everyday not give up. I want to give up at times, there are days where if someone walked up and said here take this pill you would look like Arnold, I would take it and be dammned with the consenqueces. Just today I sent my sister a email proclaiming the fact the for the first time in my life I squatted 275, her reply was "and that means...." She did not care to realize that for me ( and those here) it was a huge gain. That is why if you are tired and down, and need a lift post it here on this website. We all have those days, let us know, cause you can bet that I will post when I need help. So for all those that feel like quitting cause someone says you will not make it, take that persons face and make a snapshot in your head, then when you are at the gym bring it up and use that to drive you to realizing you goals!

Hey Mutt, there are many people here who know exactly what a 275 squat means - and we applaud your successes and appreciate your motivation.

I'm sure sis harbors no ill will. I think we have all run into people in our lives who are just negative thinkers. The Tony Robbins types would probably say, "Stay away from all negative thinkers - it just slows your time to success...". But, I don't go out of my way to steer clear of negative thinkers... I run into them everywhere. I just listen a whole lot less to what they have to say.

Hey, Mutt - way to go with your bad self. Keep up the great work and don't let anybody pull you down.

I understand what you mean...as far as family and friends sometimes being what brings us down in our diet and excercise. I sometimes wonder if they're simply getting jealous because they've got no ambition to do the same or what. I have a friend right now who constantly tells me muscles are "disgusting" and that I should "loosen up" as far as diet goes. Everytime I mention the gym, she gives me a look of disaproval.
I live with my parents and they fry EVERYTHING. Last week, my dad, who knows very well that I'm trying to eat healthy, bought me ice cream! I hated to be rude but refused it.

grrr very frustrating.

thanks for the post, I think we can all relate... I sure can

Those people are everywhere, and I too run into them on a daily basis. Sometimes the same ones 3,4,5 times per day! EVery time I am eating, I can think of one guy at work, big gut and all, and I swear, he lives to watch me eat so he can say, "you eating again?". Then a few days, weeks whatever later, he will come up to me and say, what can I do to lose this belly, what can I do to get in shape. So, take heart in knowing that most of them really don't like what they are, and it is easier for them to try to bring you down to their level than it is to come up to yours. They are the ones without the drive and ambition, and 10-15 years from now will still be saying the same thing, I need to lose X number of pounds, etc.

When I did live with her, I had to purchase and cook my own food.....or die of heartattack on a plate :o)

Know exactly what you mean Mutt. :) My worst demotivator is my mother. She doesn't say things to intentionally hurt my feelings or because she is jealous. She is just ignorant when it comes to proper diet and exercise. She is also very blunt and speaks without thinking or considering how the person will take it.

I talked to her this weekend. I was on my way to the gym and on my cell with her. When she asked what I was doing I told her. She asked how much weight I had lost. I told her 4lbs. She commented how that wasn't very much to lose in two months and was I eating too much like usual because if I was I would just be fat forever. I just bite my tongue and tell her, no I'm not eating too much. I'm losing slow just like I gained it. I certainly didn't gain 10lbs a month. Yet she expects me to lose 10lbs a month.

I'm glad I am married and on my own. When I lived at home, the cabinets were filled with little debbies, candy bars, cookies, soda, kool aid, crisco shortening, white bread, potatoes, etc. Typical Saturdays were fried eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, biscuits & gravy, pancakes, whole milk for breakfast then hotdogs (or lunch meat), potato salad, chips, soda, cookies for lunch and steak, baked potaotes(or mashed with gravy), green beans, corn, and soda for dinner. Snacks were chips, cookies, little debbies, etc. And our family got together for pitch in's every single holiday or birthday there was...and it was always desserts, carbs, and deep fried fish. Mom even puts sugar in her chili!!

Now when I visit my family, I take a big jug of water with me, and a lot of the time I take my own food. They still don't understand. They see what I'm eating and insist it is just as fattening as what they have. My mom sees my 6oz top round steak, cottage cheese, kidney beans and salad as more fattening as her fried chicken and baked potato w/butter and corn w/butter. In her head, the potato and corn are vegetables, she doesn't see the butter, and chicken is good for you. She sees steak as fattening and cottage cheese is dairy so it is fattening and beans are fattening. To her, I should only be eating that salad and nothing else if I'm on a diet. And then there is the eating in the evening. The last time I talked to her was around 9pm and I was eating some tuna and cottage cheese. You would have thought I was going to drop dead at that instant. She insists that you can't eat anything after 5 or 6pm if you want to lose weight.

She just does not understand. And she never will. I'm not so sure I could ever be thin enough for her to stop harping on me about what I eat and how much and when. I know it's because she wants me to be the best I can be. She just doesn't know how to positively motivate or reinforce.

So you aren't along Mutt! :) Keep doing what you're doing!

Tara, your dad sounds like my dad. He used to be the director of youth league bowling here, and they would sell candy for fund raisers every year. A SEMI truck would pull up to our house FULL of chocolate bars to be distributed to the kids to sell. Since my brother was in the league, dad would buy ALL that bro didn't sell himself. Once, we had 12 cases of chocolate bars with almonds!! LOL!

oh mutt the families are all the same it seems. I can barely eat 4 ounces at a time since my surgery but my mother will still look at me and say "You aren't eating what you shouldn't are you?" Makes me just want to SCREAM! I believe the majority of USA is overweight in part to our diet and exercise routines or lack there of and the other fraction of the equation is our unknowing, all well intentioned comments of our family members. When will they learn to just shhhhh!

I think with a lot of people it is either ignorance or fear of what they don't know. All I get off my aunts and my mum when they know I'm going to the gym is "You don't want to get all muscly!". That's apparently a bad thing! To them anyway. With my family, it's ignorance, they don't realise anything about weight training so they make it up.
Well done on the 275 squat. Some of us do realise and appreciate what goes into that.

yeah; you just have to seperate yourself from them. I dont want to be like them (the dumb people).
They just dont have a clue, thats all. They know that twinkies taste good and thats all that matters.
I just shake my head and smile (soon I will go to the gym and do my thing).

I agree Intruder, I simply seperate myself from the ignorant ones. I must be one of the lucky ones though, my family has always supported me and think that it is a cool thing that I watch what I eat. It also helps that I work in the health field, so they take me a little more seriously I guess and realize that this is my life.

On mother's day, my sister told me that she wishes that she had my determination and dedication to do what I am doing. It felt good to hear her say that. Ten mins later my mom wanted to know when I was going to start eating right again, and when was I going to see a doctor about all those veins that keep popping out on my arms. "Duh MOM!!! they are supposed too and I don't like lard in my turnip greens."

yep-i know exactly what your saying. i work out at home, and you should just see the expression on my mums face! all i hear is "don't become all muscly, be happy as you are!" About a week ago i printed an article off the internet about weightlifting and a good diet that suited me. I couldn't believe what my mum said! she got all angry and said "you listen to those idiots on the internet and not your own mother! You just eat what i give you, and not what some idiot wrote on the net" how frustrating!!
i don't know what it is-jealosy? ignorance?
you know what i hate most?

Good post Mutt. I find it especially hard when someone makes a dumb comment on one of my "low" esteem days. It really is hard to let comments run off and disregard it. And you are right about the time management too - I so often feel extremely guilty in leaving for the gym a half hour before my 2 yr old daughter goes to bed - but I cannot get my entire workout done if I leave later and when I do leave later, I feel angry with myself for cutting my workout short. Damned if you do theory...

On another note, I had this fellow come up to me while I was doing my lat pulldowns one night - he informed me that doing 150lbs was going to make me look manly and didn't I want to stay looking womanly like I already was?!! He actually thought I would be complimented by this! Like a woman can't add more weight to challenge herself? That we are all at the gym just to meet guys??? NOT! ....needless to say, it peeved me, and still does..OK I am done venting now...:)

some people? it takes all kinds I guess.
I dont mind a little conversation from time to time while working out, but I realy wonder the intent of some of these people that show up in the gym? Are they there as part of thier training to become an actor, and/or a fitness trainer?

I just hd to bump this up. I am making for me very large strength, and other gains. I am so pumped about deadlifting, bench squatiing what have you that I almost burst with enthusiam. SO my sister again asks how I am doing I tell her I am deadlifting 375 and her response was well she did not say a word. I have talked to other family members and the reaction is that I am going to get hurt that i should cut my eating off eat less protein, and do nothng but cardio. Things I have done in the past that have done little in the way of weight control. I have lost more size and bodyfat in the last 6-9 months then in all of the last 3 years. They act that since I have a large belly and eat a lot of meat that I do nto know what I am doing. Well excuse me for not lifting or wanting to look like a mens mag cover model. I am a powerlifter/strongman in heart and that is how I am going to lift. Ok rant over with....................for now....just wait till I get in the gym!!!
