You may be able to help me on two questions: 1) I have been thinking about purchasing one of these, I have the larger, heavy bag, but thought this may help also?? 2) When boxing is it necessary to keep the shoulder area down as much as possible so as not to build a "rounded" neck area, I have heard that but wasn't sure if it was correct as it was a long time ago - or doesn't it matter? goldengloves Posts: 690 Joined: 2003/09/19	2004/06/30, 10:37 PM Mainly a speed bag is for hand-eye movement and speed in the hands...Overtime if done for an extensive period of time it will benefit in a cardio type of way but that would be a good bit of work on that thing, Also overtime it does help develop the arms and pectoral muscles, Not as effect as weights or hitting the heavy bag would but still works...I wouldnt say it would be needed unless you were thinking of doing some sort of sport...It's also good for soft/baseball as well...Quick hands are good for a lot of things.... Im not sure if I am answering this correctly but having strong shoulders and muscles on your neck is very important for boxing, Having a strong neck and shoulders help when taking shots to the face....I have a neck strengthener I use every day...Good stuff Also take a look at evander holyfield his neck is rippled with muscles.

I like to train old school so I like it, But their is other options of creating good hand speed and coordination...

As far as the neck muscles - I need to build them up as I've mentioned before due to surgery and car accident, but I don't want the "rounded" look like my neck goes straight to my shoulders - I don't want to be too thick in muscle in the area toward the back of my neck & between the neck and the shoulders, does that make sense? goldengloves Posts: 690 Joined: 2003/09/19	2004/07/01, 07:24 PM Godlike-Just a warning you are going to feel pain, You will get hit in the nose, You will cry...Dont let the 1st couple of weeks discourage you, My trainer whenever a newbie comes in he gives them hell for a few weeks and then lets them spar, He puts them in with a more experienced guy and you get the living hell beat out of you. So be prepared for pain a boxing gym isnt taken lightly when you have pro's and champs working their...I go to work all the time w/ bruises/cuts/black eyes, Everyday thing for me.

He'll pick up the pace when he spars me. He gets in close and tries to maul me. I just shove him away and bury my foot into his chest. It's great! He keeps coming back for more and raising the level each time. It'll be up to you, Godlike, how much they beat you. For the most part, adults will try not to hit kids as hard.
