We all know that physical toughness is what makes us able to do things that we ordinarily wouldn’t be able to do. We all can be physically tough when needed. But is that what it takes to succeed in our goals? Losing weight, getting in shape, bodybuilding competition, or just being able to fit into a dress that you wore 10 yrs. ago, or fitting into clothes because we are going to a wedding or on a cruise? I believe that it takes mental toughness first and foremost. I think this is our most lacking, or hardest trait to come by. Think about it, we are gung ho on a diet, the first week it is I will do this no matter what, and you follow it. The second week rolls around, hhhhmmm, sure would like a pizza tonight! Maybe one night won’t hurt. Give in, go ahead. What happens, the next week, well, I had one last week, it didn’t seem to hurt too bad, one more won’t hurt. Oh yeah, I think I would like to have a 2 liter and a piece of cake too, then I will go back to the diet! And you know the story, the next thing you know, diet?? Uuhhhh..yeah, I am still on it! LOL…This is where mental toughness comes in. Have an end goal in mind. Anyone you admire, I guarantee they used mental toughness. When they thought, I can’t eat one more chicken breast, or one more can of tuna, guess what, they did! And now you are admiring them. It is not easy, but it is necessary for success. Myself for example, I am on a competition diet, 4 weeks ago I was wondering what am I doing this for, it is not going to work. The results weren’t quite coming. But, my mental toughness kicked in and said, stay with it, you know better. And guess what, I am now less than 2 weeks out, and I am in my all time best condition! The same can be applied to your workout. Again, using myself for example, I was doing heavy squats, and being on a comp diet, calorie deprived, I was exhausted on a set, and standing there with the bar on my back, thinking, I did enough. Then my mental toughness kicked in, and said, no, you can do more. Guess what, I not only did another, I did 3 more reps! So, be mentally tough. Don’t take no from yourself for an answer. We have to take this from enough people in our lives. Don’t do it to yourself. Say yes to your goals and achieve them!---------------------------- Failing to plan is like planning to fail! |

Great words of wisdom, seriously. In today's society, it's almost acceptable to give up and quit when things get tough. Especially when it comes to health and fitness as a whole. I am very strict with how I eat all of the time and I take my training VERY seriously. I rarely have any cheat meals (and it shows) and I am looked at as a complete weirdo, especially since I am only 21. People expect a certain amount of lazieness out of us, so they don't look so bad. It really is sad when the healthy are looked at as being weird. The everyday person can't fathom the amount of mental toughness it takes to really control what you eat and how you train. I think that is why this country is so overweight to begin with, when the going gets tough, most people run away. It's a shame. |

I am newer to this site, but this rule has applied to me throughout my whole life. In sports, you get hurt, and you don't think you can go on. You just have to push through it. Being a former wrestler in High School, that is what the sport is all about. You could be down 12-0, and think that you can't win. WRONG! You can do anything that you tell yourself you are going to do. ============ Quoting from bb1fit: We all know that physical toughness is what makes us able to do things that we ordinarily wouldn’t be able to do. Yes, NO matter what, you are a winner. I'm sure your better half thinks that all the time:O)I'm not in to fitness like a lot of you - doing competitions and all. I'm just in it to feel good about myself. It's a compliment of some achievement when your friends admire you. BUT, I need to keep on keeping on to stay this way and get better. We all wish we had you at our gyms! |

I agree 100 percent. Mental toughness is truly a trait we should aspire to. My congrats to smokers who finally quit. For the dieter who finally looses the weight, keeps it off and changes their lifestyle to match. Congrats to those who perservere against challenging situations and win! Congrats to people who create goals for themselves and do not stray from their intended target. Congrats to the people who help others stay focused. The people who have mental toughness may inspire the people who don't. What a great thing to spread around! |

Hey, we live in an instant gratification society, what do we know about delayed gratification or goal setting? That is the hardest part in getting people to see why they need to make eating right a lifestyle change and convincing them that the weight takes time to come off (did you gain it instantly?).I think it takes toughness, but having a good support network and some one who is willing to grill the next chicken breast occasionally helps. Kudos to all of you who stick with, as an ex-smoker and ex-217lb woman i can say that nothing worth having comes easily. |
