the bar.. sometimes i get daring and put some collars on the ends but that usually ends up being too much...

Dont really know my max, but a couple of weeks ago did 10 reps at 235lb I could never understand all the focus on the 1 rep max seems insignificant to me. If you lift what is comfortable with no injuries thats what counts to me.

The most I've ever done was 325, but that was 3 months ago. I think overall strength is more important. Not many people ask what your max on deadlifts or squats are. If I could bench 300+ but only squat the bar for 2 reps, I would not consider myself strong at all.

That is what I was trying to say! I much rather be able to deadlift 400 or so than be able to bench the same amount. I really feel that the focus on 1 rep max for the bench is dangerous and not a real measure of true strenght.

you're all correct in some regards. yes, some of us (myself included) are obessed with strength and strength contests, and numbers matter to us alot; this is why there is a powerlifting thread (LOL). but the bench is only part of a larger picture of what "strong" is. somehow, it has become the macho numbers exercise. when people would ask me what i benched, i always said "if you want to talk numbers, let's talk about the squat..." i mean, there are only 3 ways that someone can be titled the "world's strongest man."

I agree with everybody on here about benching not being the only thing to strength. BUT.....it is a good benchmark and it is a really good motivator. Just cause you can bench 400lbs and can't squat much doesn't make you huge...but it is always nice to see what others are benching. Or squating for that matter. i am always try to push myself more and more on bench. Not sure why but it just seems to me that I really, really push to get my bench up. I also do squats and other stuff to though.

I don't actually know for sure, because I haven't used a barbell on flat benches in quite some time, but I can do 4 reps with 52.5 lb dumbells.

As well as saying what your max on the bench is in weight, work it out as a percentage of your body weight.

I bench 3x8 at 75 Kg, which is 1 Kg above my body weight, my training partner is on the same weight, but out weighs me my 22 Kg, (as well as being 15 inches taller !)

You should actually watch out for rp and rev.. I heard they compete against each other by just putting a bar in between two buicks and slide under that then get them up for at LEAST 8 reps...

I've maxed at 250 but only weigh about 170. I won't be happy until I can do double my body weight on bench, quadruple on squat and 1.5X on clean. Football taught me it's not the size but the strength and these were the main lifts we were measured on.
