At work so I was reading the "sick of your gym" sections on EliteFts. I had to laugh, most if not all of what I had read has happend in the YMCA I go to. It amazes me to see the guys doing endless sets of curls in the mirrors. Or the father/son duo that was there last night. THis father and I use that losely, had his 100lb son(maybe 100) doing bench press. His first set was 65lb! That bar was bouncing off that poor kids chest something awful. The lat set this guy had him doing was 95lbs! I had to walk away. It was sickening.
I had also last week sent the director a email about geting a real Power cage in place of the lame power rack. I met up with him that night at the gym. I explained the benefits and he says he was looking into it. I was excited until he stated that he was afraid it proper use maybe beyond regualr memebers.....WTF? Hire me PT I will "train them" to the proper use. He is afraid they will break it or not know how to use it right and not get the use out of it. It made me laugh. -------------- When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant and which know me not, I am frightened and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Who has put me here? By whose order and direction have this place and time been allotted to me? The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me. Blaise Pascal 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

I'd be surprised if most people going to these glamour gyms/spas even know what a squat rack looks like. Talk to the guy again and throw in a few words about safety issues that you believe will be solved by purchasing a power rack. He may reconsider. -------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." Oh I did, I even threw in the "multi taksing" aspect. In that it can be used for bench press, inclince press, should press etc....I have my fingers crossed! Whats the difference between a "squat rack" and a "power cage"? Is it that the cage surrounds you on 4 sides?

They don't let you do any olympic movements at the gym I go to. I've also been yelled at for deadlifting, and it was a 15 minute argument to convince the guy that it was not an olympic lift. He finally agreed to let me do them as long as I set the bar down lightly so as not to disturb the other people with too much noise.

Squat rack can be just two upright bars that hold the bar at a set height so you can do squats...generally quite cheap...and their built can be crappy....
Powercage looks like a rectangle...it has adjustable hooks for the bar inside the cage....(which u can adjust to a variety of heights)....additionally you can usually insert thick safety bars which 'catch' the olympic bar if you happen to fail...you can put safety bars at different heights...so essentially you can do just about any exercise worth doing inside the powercage....and if you fail you wont kill yourself... my gym has something inbetween these...it sucks horribly.... | |

Exactly, the rack we have has "safety" arms that are at my mid thighs, not reall good for much at all. A squat cage/power rack is adjustable and can be of a lot more uses than just squats.....if you can keep the Curl Jockeys (learned that one today and I love it!) from setting up shop!-------------- Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. I'm lucky I guess, my gym has 2 cages, side by side, as well as 2 smith machines. They also have movable benches (flat and incline) which are kept typically by the smith. With access to 4 squat racks, I can almost always get into the cage when I want:)..Now if the guys would be kind enough to get the damn 45lb plates off the BB when their done, I'd be laughing:angry:

Sweet, two smith machines. My gym has two as well, but I have to go upstairs to use the other one.

My gym has some sort of cage hybrid thing....it has 2 "towers" in which a bar is hooked onto both sides...but the one side is only about 5ft tall while the other is 6 or 7...and has a pull up bar on it, with step that fold out to step on for short guys to get to bar. very odd...highest you can set the "spot" bar up it is abour 5 ft..
Other one is A normal squat rack....its not bad...I use it more...cause the bar is set at just the right height for me to get under it. The "4 tower" one I call it...its ither too low and I have to crouch down alot, or ge ton my tippy toes to get it off. But the gym i might be joining....has a real bolted down power rack....with 4-5in steel cage. With 22 different height adjustments. Also....a platform in front for oly lifting and rubber plats.....( clapps hands together):love: -------------- Get your bicep curling, cut off shirt, matching workout outfit wearing, flexing in mirror "toned" wanna-be ass , out of my squat rack! Dont get me started with the ymca. The y I go to has 3 flat benches and had 1 shoulder press cage. But the advantages with the seated shoulder press cage were endless. You could take the upright seat out and put a bench in there and do lockouts, squats almost everything a real cage could do. So, last thursday I am walking upstairs and they are putting a flat bench machine that you stack free weights on and take out 1 of the benches. And on top of that they do the same with the shoulder press cage and replace it with a seated shoulder press that you load up with plates. I told one of the guys working there ppl wont be happy about this. And what do you know, the next tons of ppl are complaning and filling out comment cards saying to put them back. Nothing has been done so far but hopefully soon we will get them back.

My Gym has 2 Cages, 3 Multi Racks, 3 Smith's that I HAVE NEVER USE or ever will!
My gyn is HUGE we have alot of alot and more I can get in and out without waiting on benches and stuff! We have the biggest Arobics floor in Northern Calif and this is why we got 2 cheerleader squas that train there, 49ers and Saber Cats. Yes Yes Yes I got a # of 1 without even asking for it but on a sad note I was still with my ex and declined to make the call. |
