Leg day, for those that lift and exercise this phrase has different meanings. For those that hear leg day and get a shiver this is for you. You, of course know what I am talking about, most of you if not all do. I am talking about that feeling of fear/dread knowing that you have to go do legs. You know it and after a while have come to love it. It is that feeling generated by one exercise, the KING of all exercises. The one that seperates the men, from boys and girls from the women. I am talking about SQUATS. You wake up the day of the workout, if you are lucky you can do it first thing in the morning. If not you have all day to think about it and worry and shudder. If you have never really done them then you have no idea about squats. Well here is a little word of advice, start slowly and take you time. It is by far the hardest one there is next to deadlifts (that is another topic). If done right you really need no other. You warm up set the weight, go under the bar place your shoulders and lift it off the rack. Now you have to squat over and over till you reach your reps range you want. Set the bar back down add weight and start all over. This is where the dread sets in, you start to think "I can not get this, I am gonna get stuck, the weight is going to kill me OH MY GOD i AM SO TIRED MY LEGS ARE GOING TO FALL OFF" this and other thoughts run rampant thru you mind. Somehow, someway you get it done. But then you realize after 3-4 sets of this, you still have maybe 3-4 more exercises left to do............you wanna cry for your mommy, you want the end of the world to come so you do not have to finish, but it does not happen. You go and do the leg ext, ham curls, lunges etc till you legs hurt so bad and fell so tight that you can barely walk out of the gym. God forbid you have stairs to walk or a stick shift to drive home.......and all of this just leads to.............................................THE DAY AFTER!!!!!! You thought 4 sets of squats and all the other work you did was tough wait till you try to sit down on the toliet the next day...............WELCOME TO LEG DAY MY FRIENDS!!!!!!

For those who don't like doing squats...here is a great alternative!! Be aware there is a bit of harsh language, but hmourous and good reading...http://pub33.ezboard.com/fbulkandpower48873frm4.showMessage?topicID=36.topic

Squats rule, Mutt. I lift at 5:30 AM, so I can't worry all day about it - I just get up, drive to the gym and squat!

In addition to the "good" pain on the days that follow, do you ever get those tremors where your legs just start twiching immediately after a really brutal workout?

When I get out of bed the morning after leg day, I have trouble even moving. My darling wife enjoys poking fun at her "old man", saying things like, "...and this is supposed to be GOOD for you, right?..."

Ahh the pain! (Of squats, not marriage!)

Ahhhhhh.... The days of cursing at the bar, heavy vomiting, blood-shot eyes, praying for death, and bleeding gums I miss in a sick, twisted, and demented kinda way!

BTW, I posted this ode to squats a while ago, check it out:

Heavy Vomiting?
Praying for Death!?
Bleeding gums?!

Sheesh - I thought sore limbs and leg tremors meant I had a good workout. Guess I have quite a way to go, eh Rev8?

God, I hope not, TSMD! LOL... There is no reason to put yourself through that unless you plan on being in a squat comp. Muscle tremors and not wanting to get out of the bed the next day are tough enough to deal with as well as more than sufficient!

Minor aches and pains I can deal with, Rev. But you can count me out of any Squat Competitions (for maybe a few more reasons than just the pain aspect...). I just don't want to be rude and break any of your squat records! <TSMD doing his best Barney Fife impression...> Wellllll Rev8... guess your Squat records are probably safe for at least a few more weeks... <snort>

Hey! Squats are a challenge to be met with vigor and defeated! i live for leg day - the heavier the better, and smith machine lunges with the big boys loaded on, or walking lunges with 100 lbs, just try and break my ass (sometimes the next day I think I have) but nothing makes you feel more accomplished (except maybe upping your bench) than a really hard leg day.
Mutt - I had an issue of Muscle media that had a really good article on squats and affirmations, it sounds corny - but if you get under the bar and tell yourself thet weight isn't heavy and your legs are massive and stuff like that your squats will crank up a few notches. Honestly. Another good tip for people who are new to squatting - (not you, mutt) Focus more on driving your legs into the floor instead of pushing the bar up. think of it in terms of a leg press - this has really helped my clients get stronger and steadier on their squats!
Leg day rules. But, then again, so does chest day, and back day, and biceps/triceps day, and shoulder day... I am sick, aren't I

LOL! I just had my "leg day" 2 days ago and even today, I cringe when I have to deal with a staircase to tackle. Not to mention driving my car (stick shift).

This is why FT is great. People in the same boat as me! Good to hear you all curse, praise and whine leg day.

Poor quads. They love the attention during squats but are requesting some hot bath time afterwards. And this being the end of the quarter...anyone else feeling the crunch from work?

Ugh, Krb! I hate end of quarter almost as bad as end of year; but QT1 is always the worst since it's right before tax time!

And TSMD, if you're Barney, maybe I'll just start calling Mutt AAAAANNDYYYYYYYY!!!!!

I just did my legs! I love leg days! because I have Saturdays to recuperate. Squats, Leg presses, (Toilet seat hurts after), calf raises, straight leg deadlifts. I'm burning now, and the muscles are hot. Did 1/2 hr of cardio after :( I luv it!

Mutt, good points. SO true. Here's one for your profile.
If you can walk after leg day, get back in there and do some more squats.

We discussed inventing a sling and pulley system that would lower you to the toilet seat after leg day - I bet you could make a fortune!

On my lasty leg day (that Friday), I did squats, deadlifts, seated calf raises, diagonal travelling lunges and jump squats on the standing leg press machine thing.
