Sonya,
How long have you been working out for?
I spoke with a trainer friend of mine today and he suggested anaerobic sprints (my spelling could be completely off with that one). To the best of my knowledge of what he briefly explained is that you work your body passed the point of oxygen intake. It sounds dangerous but its only in spurts that you increase your cardio until you feel like you cant take it anymore then you slow down. this will move the glycogen stored in your muscles thus making you leaner. Im going to reference this online more also. If anyone else is reading this please correct me if my information is wrong on this one. good luck and keep me posted on your progress.

Quoting from Texas489:

I feel the same way you do and I need to have my BMI redone since I have not had it done since February.
I know I have firmed up but my clothes are tighter I know that muscle doesnt give in jeans etc like fat does but its frustratig when you work your butt off.

Hopefully the two of us can figure out what we are doing wrong or maybe we are doing something right we just dont know it yet.LOL

I need to lose 15 pounds permanently off of my 24 yr old 130 pound frame. I've been strictly keeping to my balanced diet between 1400 cals and 1600 cals for months. I work out in a gym 4 times/week averaging a total of 500 cals burned/workout. i incorporate cardio and weight training and change my workouts up often. i havent lost a thing. if anything im bulking up in muscle only. Am I doing something wrong? Should i burn more calories? My BMR is about 1430 cals/day. Any suggestions?

I suspect you are female?

Not that that makes much difference, but I'm guessing since you are 130lbs and want to hit 115lbs, I'm guessing you are. How tall are you?

What does your 1600 calorie diet consist of? Diet is likely where the challenge is.

Please fill out your profile, too.

Thanks and welcome to FT!

I'm navigating this site. I just signed up.

Well my diet consists of wheat cereal and fruit in the morning. yogurt once a day and various fruits or vegetables. sometimes a few crackers before a workout. coffee without sugar. lean protein and rice or more veggies for dinner. i eat whatever i want on the weekends but it is still sensible food and drink.

I am female and have gained 15 pounds since ending years of competitive dance.

If you are wanting to drop the weight, look at decreasing the carb intake a tad. Don't eliminate it, but drop it a smidge. The cereal, fruit, crackers and rice are loaded with carbs. You still need carbs, but it sounds and looks as though you are getting more than you need.

I will certainly do that. After you listed all of those carbs I realized what i was eating. Should have been aware of that. I suck. What do you think about me cutting more calories? Do you think I'm burning adequate amounts?

I'm not so sure you should cut more calories.. adjust what you eat, and you should see a big difference.

also, if you are building muscle, you may be losing fat, and it is just not showing on the scale.

You may also want to increase your lean protein intake.

o by measurements, not what the scale says - have you firmed up?

i have firmed up. im scared to get on the scale b/c i know i weigh the same if not more from the muscle ive attained. it isnt my goal to become too muscular. do you think an increase in protein will allow that to happen. i hear about stars like hillary swank putting on 17 pounds of muscle before million dollar baby and i dont really think i need that. my goal is to drop 15 pounds to my normal weight.

It took about nine months for the change you see in my before and after photos.

Believe it or not - i ate high protein, moderate good carbs, lots of veggies and good fats.

I also lifted HEAVY.

I don't think I look 'bulky'...the fear of being bulky is silly - you will get leaner and denser - it may mean you 'weigh' more, but you will take up less space.

Alos - most women, if they are trying to put on mass, like I am, have a hard time gaining solid muscle - usually when someone says she is 'bulking' up it means she is getting firmer and fuller muscles but hasn't leaned out yet.

For a great diet plan that will help you drop bodyfat and still eat plenty look at the WSSC food plan thread. It is based on figure competitors dieting for competition - the goal is a lean, toned look.

you may want to cut out fruits from your diet as much as possible and focus mroe on vegetables. Carb intake should be moderate and consist mainly of complex(low glycemic index) and high fiber sources(quoinoa, black/brown rice, beans, etc)

goofball I have been working out since February.
I have a post on this page somewhere about my dilema.

I to limit my calories to 1500 I am so careful with the exception I eat fruit maybe I need to revaluate that more after reading the above post.

I will do some research on what you said the trainer recomended but it does sound like HIIT.
I do that on the elliptical machine its hard but I have worked up to doing it.

Can I ask why 15 pounds? Are you currently happy with your measurements (legs, arms, waist, chest, etc.)? It sounds like you are trying to hit a number for the sole sake of hitting that number.

What are you trying to accomplish that requires you to be 15 pounds lighter. Personally at 5'5" I don't think you would want to drop that much weight, but that's just my take.

ecle5c,
good question. i was between 115-120 for years. i think its a comfortable weight for me to be. I shouldnt focus on the scale though. Its an easy way to reassure myself that i am making progress, not that i would quit doing anything that i am right now. I dont know my measurements. I know that my favorites jeans that ive worn for years dont fit. I would like to lose weight all over though. what do you think i should do?

i use two types of cross training elliptical machines and incline treadmills and stationary bikes. each machine has a fairly reliable heart monitor so i adjust the settings to keep my target heartrate stable and increase the settings when i want to sprint for a minute. share your program, sonya. im interested.

I found this on the internet but since I do a longer routine I just changed the times up a lil I tried doing this one 4 times but that got so nuts changing numbers so much.

Elliptical:

Crossramp 4 Resistance 5 for 8 minutes
Crossramp 6 Resistance 6 for 4 minutes
Crossramp 5 Resistance 5 for 6 minutes
Crossramp 6 Resistance 7 for 4 minutes
Crossramp 4 Resistance 5 for 8 minutes

This puts it at 30 min so this was easier than the changing numbers so often its tough it doesnt sound like it but when the resistance and crossramp are so close in numbers its tough and changing the numbers like this the heart rate changes which challenges you more.
I have been doing this for one hour total time and going around 5.5 miles.

I am trying to get my husband to exercise and hes not into it so I went and got us new bikes and we are bike riding in the evening this makes it harder on me but it gets him moving but I get double cardio LOL.I figure the cardio cant hurt me anyway.

Sonya,
I think we're going to have to start a new topic. "How do I get my spouse in shape too?" I want my boyfriend to work out so badly. He has the time and he wants to get healthy but he doesnt do anything about it. I cant force him to but I tell him how much I wish that he would. I want him to be healthy overall. I dont care whether he loses weight or not. He expresses interest but maybe its a confidance issue as far as getting into the gym. I can imagine its more intimidating for a guy to assimilate in the gym then it is for a woman. Any tips?

My husband has been watching whats hes eating without going overboard but he hates to exercise and is not bashful in telling it. Hes told me to do ever how much I want but dont expect him to do it.
Push the bike riding this seems to be less intimidating and you can get into it pretty cheap and if yall like it buy better bikes down the road.
I think everyone needs some form of cardio in their routines and the younger you realize that the better off you will be so keep pushing him and ease him into the whole thing.

goofball - amyksmith started a similar post in the men's forum..I think it is called 'need men's advice' or something similar.

It is hard when your significant other doesn't want to get fitter or healthier with you...I have found that putting it as a health and longevity issue made it more importnat to my husband than just a 'fitness' issue. also, I pointed out that sex is better when we are both in shape

If you aren't married and you find the disparity between your fitness level and goals and his getting bigger and bigger...you may need to re-evaluate your relationship - why are you together? What do you have in common? What is your future like if he refuses to get healthier.... there are a lot of fit males out there :) I am not saying that your getting in shape means the end of your relationship - but sometimes it gets to a point where they have to decide to keep up with you, or get left in the dust.

I have been married almost 29 yrs and my husband and I have alot in common but exercise is not one of the things.
Hes bike riding so thats a improvement and hes watching what he eats. Finally I made him realize getting junk out of a vending machine to snack on was not healthy and was adding pounds to him he dropped the vending machine lost 6 pounds right away.
