It's been 4 weeks now, and the wonderful enthusiasm and drive I had is starting to fade. I just finished stareing at my bench and free weights, and have been thinking that maybe I'll just rest tonight..like I did last night. I know I have to keep at it...I want to keep at it, but I find myself looking for excuses...
Any words of advice to get me past this hump?

Yep, LIFESTYLE CHANGE. That is what this is, it is not a week or two and done. If it was, everyone would have a six pack and look great. Especially as you age, normal metabolic changes take place.

so it's do..or die...your way or the highway?
no wonder so many give up so often. Not trying to win an Olympia here..just trying to do something good for myself.

I did my workout, and am feeling better about things right now...
but I hope you're not as discouraging to all of the newcomers BB1.

I guess I should have posted in the beginners forum...maybe someone there would remember what it was like back in the beginning.

I did not mean to be discouraging, I in fact meant to shed light and be encouraging. It truly is a lifestyle change, you need not want to compete in an Olympia, but we do in fact have to fight the natural effects of age with diet and exercise. How many times have you heard someone say, I don't eat any more now than I did, and I am gainig fat? Metabolic changes taking place, muscle lost and fat gained in its place. Natural aging process unfortunately.

ANOTHER note on what Bb was saying is that like most beginners that 4 week hump is make or break. If you get past that you have a better chance to get past other ones...we can give you all the advice we have in the end you have to just do it.

Nelson you must make a commitment...plain and simple...you don't have to just suck it up and do it though...make it interesting....switch up your workouts....

you can make a commitment and stick to it...if you sign a contract with yourself, tell all your friends about your goal, plan your workouts ahead of time, break down your goals into smaller ones so you can see improvements from workout to workout to stay motivated....you can also set longer term goals and see where you are after you get there...and adjust accordingly...also make observations....

for example notice how after a few months of doing squats...scooting down into a squt position becomes easier ...or how after deadlifts it's easier to pick up a box of the floor or your kids/grandkids....or increased mobility/flexibility....these are the things that you can notice if you pay attention and these are the things that can keep you motivated....

don't look in the mirror hoping to see a 6pack overnight and simply judge your success based on that....

Do you have a friend who also lifts? Make a commitment and ask him if he wants to workout together...or if you have the resources hire a personal trainer...it's a lot more difficult to fail then...because you'll feel obligated to train otherwise you're wasting your time and personal trainer's time....etc

Like mutt already stated we can give you reasons, ideas, and encouragements but in the end it is you who is in control of his own destiny....make lifting into your routine....so it becomes a part of you....

Not everyone is going to be a bodybuilder. To be completely honest, I don't feel I have the time or the committment to make a go... :)

However, I don't want to be an old, old man.

I saw Jack LaLane on the tube the other morning, peddling a juicer... now, the guy is 90.. you wouldn't know. I would have guessed maybe 60....

I feel if I can make a weekly committment of four or five hours out of seven days, I can be a whole lot happier and healthier. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, you don't have to spend four hours in the gym everyday...

Know what your goals are, and go in that direction. If you want to be a bodybuilder, readjust... if you just want to become healthier, lose some fat and maintain a healthy lifestyle, readjust.

It's not hard to do this and the long term rewards are great. Like Mutt says, get past the next couple days and you're on your way!

I thank you all for your time...this IS something I want to do, even though it is a juggle to make the time, I still do. I'm just having a crap day, and was hoping for just a hand up...just a little "way to go" or something like that to remind to get on with it. I know the commitment this is going to be...and I plan to stick it out.
It would be easier with someone here to challange me, but that's not the case right now. Fortunately, I hoped to have found some of that in all of you.

Stay with us bro...we will keep you on your toes. I am sure if you make a post, you can find a "challenge" from someone here on the site. Give it a whirl.

Set some goals... pick a fitness routine from FT and get at it! Anything a little more specific you'd like to know?

Why not post a challenge? By february, many people's resolutions and motivation are starting to flag and they need some incentive to keep up the good work.

Call it the 'Over the Slump' challenge and create some guidelines - post it in general fitness or fitness for beginners - i am sure you will have some takers - there are a lot of new people looking for motivation.

Posting a training log couldn't hurt either. That way you can watch your progress as you go, and you'll be motivated to keep with it because others will be watching and encouraging you. I read a study that said some people could lift up to 43% more when someone else is watching....probably could apply here too.
