Its been a tough few weeks with this freakin' diet. I have managed to cut my body fat down a few %'s. Right now it is more the mental game. For those who have competed, you know what I mean. When you are used to throwing around hundreds of pounds in the gym and feeling big, its tough to cut yourself off from that. I'm still able to lift heavy, but my strength is starting to go down, along with the fat. Of course this is what I want, but its a crappy feeling, because you feel smaller and weaker, and your workout are not as intense. There is nothing I can do about this because this is how training goes for competition. For some, it doesn't hit them as hard, buit for me, it can get down-right discouraging. Because I have shed too much weight too soon, i decided to carb-load for the last week with good carbs. I feel alot fuller. But starting Tuesday, the diet begins again and I'm just dredding it. I'll post my eating habits throughout the week to give you guys a taste of how much it sucks. ASIMMER's post are great and give a good idea of what it is like to diet. I"M WITH YA ASIMMER!!!

Hey Jdelts!! Keep it up, like you said, it is mental! You can do it, don't get sick this time - keep your calories up enough!

A few irritating things my old friend Tom has said to me about dieting/competing (he was at approximatley 2%, and i don't know how many steroid cycles he has done, which is probably why he could do these things. But I used to question him all the time about his diet and routine, etc).

"Tom, do you sodium load two weeks out?"
Tom - "My entire pre-contest diet is a sodium load" Chuckle.

We are talking about abs, his are amazing, eye=popping, shredded, and I say I work mine three times a week, rotating endurance work with heavier work.
"I never even work my abs" I hoped he was messing with me, the bastard.

I have a new sign on my kitchen wall it reads "When you go on a diet, the first thing you lose is your temper" it makes me chuckle and rememebr that I chose this and I can't be soo crabby and irritable (I mean, I can be, but it isn't fair to my loved ones).

WE are all watching, keep it up!!!!

jdelts...didn't you just start dieting for your contest? How fast has your strength dropped? If it is dropping too fast, you may be cutting calories too fast, and a subsequent muscle loss with the fat loss. I am 6 weeks out Saturday, and am still doing the same weights I was 10 weeks ago. Be careful here. We work hard for our muscle.

Now you know you can do it - and will - so do it! :)

Thanks y'all, I really appreciate the kind words of encouragement. ASIM...I hate juice heads because they don't work as hard as us. BB1...you're absolutely right, I have fine-tuned my diet to include more calories. My strength hasn't REALLY dropped at all, its just that my intensity isn't as high. My last show, I was able to put up the same weight 2 weeks out that I was putting up when I started. So I knew something was a little wrong this time. CHUCK, I stand week before your manliness. You motivate me to be the animal you are.
Thanks again all!

Sorry all...I was away for the weekend then I was went to the METS home opener yesterday. I took the last five days off. Today has been an easy start for me, breakfast(10 egg whites with low-fat cheese and turkey bacon w/a banana). I usually start my day good, but its when the evening comes that my cravings go through the roof. Tonight is BACK with some light cardio to follow(12-15 min. jog). I'm weighing in at 210 as of today. I would guestimate my BF% to be the same as two weeks ago which was 12-13%. For me that BF is right where I want it to be for now. Today starts the slow process of maintaining the lean mass and shedding the pounds. This is such a SLOOOOOOOWWWWW process. But isn't everything we work hard for a slow process? Thanks for the push y'all!

Can you eat any type of protein bar? i used to cut up a nitrotech s'mores into little pieces and pretend it was m&m's (sad, i know). And crystal lite is very sweet, not too bad mixed with vanilla protein powder.

I held out on some calories so I could have TGI FRiday's that night. That is not my usual intake.
Today: 10am--12 egg whites, 1 cup of oatmeal, vitamin and glutamine
12pm--1 can of tuna on whole wheat
2pm---Shake (50g)w/glutamine
330---1 cup of broccoli with baked potato and fat free sour cream
5pm---Shake(30g)
6pm---workout
730pm- post-workout shake(75g of protein with maltodextrine combo and creatine)
830pm- 10oz chicken breast with chopped potatos and onions
1000pm- Nighttime shake(40 grams) with glutamine
1030pm- ZMA

I don't usually hold out on calories so I can splurge. I know this is not good for maintaining a good metabolism, but one time will not hurt me at this stage. I REALLY wanted the shrimp platter which had potatos, onions and a whole lot of peppers. That particular day's caloric intake didn't seem like much, but I got enough. I'm up over 3000 cals easily. today is much more like what I have been eating. Sorry for the last example.

Hank...I try to keep the BF% down but not ot yhe point where I stay cut all around. The reason for doing this is so it becomes easier to lose the BF when competition time comes. I've been lifting for a long time(11 years serious). Your not going to continuously gain unless you continue to make modifications to your routine, diet and goals. I used to be a powerlifter and alot bigger than I am now, but not nearly as cut. You sound as though you're pretty much on track as far as gaining quality mass. If you are not going to compete, then I wouldn't stress keeping your BF down so much unless for personal goals. What is your goal exactly?

Jdelts, thanks for the info. My goal right now is to get alot bigger than I am now but not to the point where I'm bulky/fat looking. I'm definitely interested in competing down the road...but I'm not ready for it yet. Thats part of the reason I wanted to know how you gained muscle (bulking up or maintaing the same bf%). I've bulked up in the past and gained alot of strength & muscle but also alot of fat. So I'm still a bit confused. Did you still make significant gains while keeping the same bf%? As for the modifications in routine, diet & goals. My workout routine changes all the time, I'm constantly doing stuff to shock my muscles (supersets, power sets, etc). My diet is kinda what throws me off. It's not consistent, some days I'll eat alot of quality food and some days I wont. Anyway, I'll keep working at it and hopefully I'll make some good gains. Good Luck on your dieting and competition!

Hankmeister - "My diet is kinda what throws me off. It's not consistent, some days I'll eat alot of quality food and some days I wont. Yesterday was tough, especially because I had alot of running around to do.
7am-10 egg whites and 1/2 cup of oatmeal. Glutamine, carnitine and vitamin.
11am-shake(50g) with peanutbutter on whole wheat toast
4pm- 11oz chicken with peppers and whole wheat pasta
7pm- turkey burger on whole wheat, glutamine
9pm- preworkout shake(35g)
945- workout
1130- post-workout shake(70g) with glutamine
1230-flax seed oil, carnitine, ZMA then bedtime

This is NOT an ideal day for me...too much time between meals and not enough calories. I had to drive upstate for the day for an emergency. Without thinking, I didn't pack any food to bring with. For those of you who live in the metropolitan New York area, you know how bad the the Cross-Bronx Expressway can get at rush hour(2hours to go just 15 miles through the Bronx). Today has been much better so far.

Is there any formula you use for determining the amount of glutamine a person uses post (and or pre-) workout? I have only been taking 5g on workout days and wonder if there is any benefit to taking more?

With the amount of research and trial and error I've done with glutamine, I feel that the more the better, especially someone in my position who is trying to lose fat and maintain muscle mass. 5-10g's per day is ideal for regular exercise and weight training. No miracles here, but its a great tool to use when trying to keep lean mass.

For the last couple of days it has been extremely rough to maintain my diet. Unfortunately my girlfriend had a death in the family whre she ws very close with this person. It has been rough for her and for me at the same time seeing her go through this. I had to put my needs on the back-burner for a few days. I'm starting up again today though.

Post workout is the most essential time for glutamine supplementation. It will enhance glycogen storage, reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress, strengthen the immune system, help promote protein synthesis, and decrease protein degradation.

Pre sleep is another great time, sleep at night puts your body in a highly catabolic state, and glutamine levels are quickly depleted. It will promote its preservation, and proper immune function.

I would recommend having it a minimum of 3 times a day... in the morning, post exercise, and pre-sleep.

Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid you never really get enough of.

Today
10 am---Special K(2 servings=20g. protein, 18g. carbs with 1/2 cup of skim milk, glutamine, vitamin, carnitine
12 pm---tuna on wheat(40g. protein)
230pm---turkey burger (18g. protein), banana
330pm---protein shake (45g protein)
430pm---workout
6pm---post-workout shake (70g of protein with maltodextrine and creatine)
7pm---salad with turkey burger on wheat bread(25g of protein)
930---shake(50g of protein) glutamine, carnitine
1130---flax seed oil, ZMA

Believe it or not, I did NOT meet my desired protein intake for the day. I have to work on that because time is running short...only 14-1/2 weeks left!

Jdelts... amazing.. I feel like a schmuck for complaining on the board about being emotional being only two weeks into training for my competition!!

Good luck in August. Pictures look fantastic!!

This board is awesome!! I admire all the people who are out there to offer support and motivation, really really helps.

Amy... based on what you wrote me yesterday, I made an appt. for my manicure and pedicure and in a couple of weeks, I'm going for the massage... if I can't have wine, I am going to indulge in massages!!
