This is somthing I been pondering for a while. I'm not a persoanl trainer.....nor do I claim to be.....but there are a few people, most time same people doing things thats really unsafe and could get them hurt, or make no gains.

For instance the other night, a guy was "teaching" his friend how to do shrugs.......and he was having him roll his shoulders back and forth.......I could tell his friend was uncomfy doing it, cause he'd walk away rubbing his shoulders an djust by his expression.

and another guy.....he does a sumo style grip deadlift......and he rounds his back when he does it.....makes me hurt to watch.

Now I keep to myself, with my headphones going, only to take them off is somone asks me to spot or can they work in.And I for one don't like other peoples "advice" especially if its wrong.( on guy told me to drag the bar across my chins when I deadlift)

I know its none of my business what they do or how they are training......but there are some things I KNOW aren't right?

I know exactly what you're talking about. It's really not our place to pry into what other people do... BUT had someone not did that for me I would still be working 'every muscle' once a day, only going half way on bench and skipping muscles like shoulders, back and legs because I thought they 'weren't important'.

Story time: There is this one girl at our gym that must do over two hours of cardio everyday (she running from when we get there till when we leave). I feel bad for her because she is so ghastly thin. I want to tell her to get off the treadmill and into a buffet because she looks so sickly, but I know how that would go over. She would think I am lying and eating makes people fat and lifting weights makes girls look like men.

I learned a long time ago not to say much. I just shake my head to myself and keep doing what I am doing. Your advice to the "gym experts" will mostly fall on deaf ears. Save yourself the trouble. If someone asks me, I help them.

I keep my comments or help to myself. People I see using incorrect form or whatever would just see me as a fat guy who sweats a lot and think, "What does he know?" No one is going to ask me for help or to spot them. So, I just move on to the next exercise and do the best I can.

It's tough having an opinion, tougher being judgemental and then having to bottle it all up and remain silent.
I'm with carivan and bb, if they ask extend assistance, if not, get on with your workout and forget about it.

And borp....maybe that girl who runs from the time you arrive to the time you leave is training for some other reason? Marathon, maybe? Just because she isn't on your drift doesn't mean what she's doing isn't what she wants to do?

I have thought of that, but unless she has been training for this marathon for the last two years, its more likely a complex. I know she is doing what she wants to do, but it doesn't stop it from being dangerously unhealthy.

What if it's an old lady doing an exercise incorrectly, and in a way that she might hurt herself? Should you tell her the correct way to do the exercise? That was the situation I was in the other day.
I always see people using wrong form, but I just turn away and mind my own business. Sometimes I tell one of my friends at the gym to check them out to. I don't enjoy watching someone struggle with weight when I know that they're not making any prgress.

Yep ...just bite your tongue....

I see people doing quarter/half squats all the time...and I always want to correct them but knowing how annoying it is...I keep myself in check...

same goes for the rolling of shoulders on shrugs, pulldowns to the back, or doing pulldowns to the front while yanking body (using a lot of lower back)...not to mention one guy dropping the bar on the bench press on his chest from about a foot...with 315 on the bar....hurts me just to watch....it literally bounces back up like 6 inches....but like I was saying..unless some1 specifically asks me for some advice...I keep it to myself...

I think it has a lot to do with pride. People don't want others telling them what to do; or telling them they are wrong. (I don't. :)) If I were in a gym and one of you told me I was doing something wrong, I would take it well though, since I'm a newbie.

I tried to give this guy advice once but it fell on deaf ears literaly he was deaf. He would load a bar up with 400lbs then proceed to shrug it bouncing at the knees the whole time then collapse in pain. When this guy was lifting the whole gym would stop him to watch to see if he was going to get hurt. Lets just say he has been out for the past 5 months lol.

I would say if it is an old woman and she is likely to hurt herslef, walk up and introduce yourself, then say something like 'I noticed you are working your (whatever muscle she is working), can i show you a more efficient way to target that muscle group?'
That method is non-threatening and they feel you are just trying to maximize their workout, which isn't insulting to most people. Just be casual and helpful.
I found in my time as a trainer at the gym that women are more approachable for advice on form, it is better that someone who knows what they are talking about tells them how to do it right than to wait for them to ask the King of Bad Form and end up with injuries. There was a Bambi at my gym who would do terrible form on the pec dec (settings wrong, starting way too far back, more weight than she could handle). She would get done and then rub her shoulder joints and complain about it hurting. The King of Bad Form (he had appointed himself as her trainer) tells her 'It is supposed to hurt, thats how you know it is working'.
She will end up with bad rotatotor cuffs because that idiot thinks he knows what he is doing...

I steer away from offering men advice, even if they are damaging themselves.

yea...yesterday...i saw a couple people doing wrong form which would injure them eventually...

one of them was a very pretty woman in her 30s doing shrugs by rolling her shoulders and doing it in a jerky motion...i always want to come over and say that it's a way to possibly hurt urself...but for one I thought she might think i was coming on to her...so i just let her be...she wasn't using a lot of weight...so...wasn't too bad...i guess

and another guy doing ez-bar curls....with 45s...using every muscle in his body.......i think his legs/back got a better workout...he walks like he's ronnie coleman...i stay away from giving him any advice...

If it looks like they might hurt themselves, offer to give them advice. Don't offer the advice, just offer to give it to them. If they're interested, give it to them.

If it is harmless, leave it alone.

Where I have to bite my tongue and not laugh out loud is when I see these little little girls (the ones obviously there to show off there so called stretching abilities) doing leg presses....I mean come on...if you can squat down and stand back up again I am sure you can do more than 5lbs a side on the leg press machine....You will not get huge legs....Here I am doing on average 2-4 plates (45lb) as side...I feel like a bit of a freak beside them.... lol
2005/03/15, 06:41 AM
lol....4 plates a side? 8 total? that's very impressive lonegirl....

I know what you're saying though...they are the exact opposite of those who pile on the weight to the detriment of their bodies...by doing very light weights...they are not getting much out of their workout...but at least they are not likely to hrut themselves...so it's on them...

I, too, lonegirl, press 2 a side and I have only been doing this a couple months and am ready to move that up and my legs are finally decreasing in size and the muscle definition is so much better so lifting more is definately helping!

I wanted to say that I would always appreciate someone giving me good, constructive advice as I would much rather be doing my workout correctly than injure myself or get no gains from all my hard work. I think it can be in the way someone approaches you, too, if they are all smarty pants and negative I may not be as enthusiastic about listening as if someone kindly made a suggestion and helped me, and that would be a shame because the smarty pants may have some real good suggestions but their attitude makes it hard to know if they are trying to help or are being a know-it-all. But I really think most people would appreciate good advice and then there are those that will just keep doing what they are doing regardless.

Well the probelm with guys is....testasterone......or EGO. I'd say about a good 70% of the guys in the gym, lift with their ego. They are there for one resaon , actually two. Lift as much weight, to draw attention to themselves, or talk to girls. Or combining the 2 and lifting alot to impress the girls.

Case in point, a persoanl trainer was working out the other day, with some other guy. Here was the trainers workout........135x? 135x? 185x? 225x? 315x2 225x? 225x?

Now 1st off 225 to 315......thats a big jump, and when he did the 315 he bounced it off his weight, arched his back terriblely, and he gt it half way up, and his spotter had to curl it off him. That was my "EGO sense" going off. Meaning he has a chip on his shoulder, and must be lacking in some other department, in bed or attention or somthing.

However his spotter, just did his normal workout, except his working sets where 275, he didn't even try 315.....I was quite impressed he didn't. He had perfect form, elbows out, no bounce.

Most of the time I can tell when someone is just doing it for show, an dactualy just naive or don't know. BUt i think somtimes its a combo though.

I saw a guy doing db curls with 30lb DB. He curled them as fast as he could the force of it brought the Db back behind him so he could swing it up. I briefly thought of telling the right way, but I do not do that anymore since it falls on deaf ears 99% of the time.

I have a question. Do the women at the gym even pay attention to how much the guys are lifting? I mean, come on! I know I wouldn't be paying attention. I could care less how much they are lifting. Now, if someone is making a fool out of themselves, that might be entertaining.

In my observations, I think women look more at the guys who are well built rather than how much they are lifting.

I mean if a guy is grunting and groaning real loud with a heavy weight, normal reflex action is to look where the sound is coming from, but then they look right away. Take a guy who is well built, nice cuts, and you will see alot more women eyeing him.

It's funny but from experience and talking to a few women on the issue they generally could care less....it's about how built you are....my female friends comment on my well built behind but they could care less how much I have to deadlift to get it....

Andrew I know what you're saying...I got a guy in my gym....this black dude...about 6'0 260...built with a monster upper body(he's overweight mostly) ...comes in gardening gloves....does 315....he lets it freefall for a good 8-10 inches....it literally bounces like 6 inches of his chest....and he does it for 5 reps....I literally have to look away or I break out laughing....

Most of the women don't like that much very very very muscular boy... Usually it s more well build but like people in advertisment or models... At least that's what i see in clubs and with my friend

For my part, i don t care lifting light, i mean i don t want to impress nobody and ... :) I know that the trainers in my gym laugh at me... Don t give a shit, i do it for me : )

ah yes, why are all the trainers in my gym overweight????? (crunch miami:surprised:

I'm still biting my tougne....other night a trainer was teaching a woman to squat. She couldn't do the bar right form, only about 45degrees of a squat. Now I couldn't hear what he was saying, due to my head phones....however after the fact she couldn't do the 45lb bar....he adds 20lbs! WTF?
