I cant find it anywhere on this site, so i thought id ask myself. Ive been doing weights for about 12 weeks now, and i have heard that if you dont change your routine every so often that your muscles will get used to it, and wont get bigger. So my question is. How often should i change my weight program routine, so this doesnt happen?

I've done a program for as long as 12 weeks in the past, but now usually eight, rest a week, start the same routine for a couple more or totally change it.

Basically, if it stops working for you, change it.

I think changing a workout is good, but also can be bad. If you change it to often how do you build up those muscles? YOur body needs some bit of time to get used to it. Anyway that is my opinion

Simply changing your rep range or a slight variation in grip or stance is sometimes enough with out changing your exercises.

I agree on the heavey compound lifts, so lets say on chest day you do 3 routines and the 1ts is always a bench, well I believe you can stay on the bench longer but them other 2 routine must be mixed up.

Same with legs, I stay with Squats and walking lunges just for the stablizing and balances a bit longer but I will mix up any other part of leg day up every 3 weeks.

I think you have a good point and it's why untill I'm happy with my heavey compound lifts, Bench and Squats I can stay on thoughs because I am changing up on them more offten just by adding more weight!

So my point is, you must mix things up on the lighters stuff and on the real heavey stuff if like me your just getting going on it (Injury Held Me Back) and are in your 1st stages of gaining strenght off them then just by adding weight is in fact mixing it up!

The term to mix is up is just so you keep shocking your body to trick it to make it respond and by just adding weight will indeed do this but on lighters stuff I would do some thing like this, Dumbbells flat bench then in 3 to 6 week switch to incline then next switch do them on a(My favorite way to do fly and DB Presses)stability ball. Now this is if DB's are your second chest routine and not a heavey replacement for the Bench, I for one do not let them the same in weight if it where are my heavy compound 1st routine as in my second my 1st routine will take too much a tool on me but then again I'm nursing a bad disc in lumbar!

I agree that a slight change can be a difference maker. I meant to say that chaging too often can be a bad thing. I run a routine for at leat 8-12 weeks. I do make slight changes each week but the basic routine is the same.

I run the same routine for a while, but I rotate exercise variations around every 1-3 weeks as I start adapting to them.
This is dependent on the exercise and how I feel.

This also changes as I come closer to competition time. For example, while I would normally only deadlift for a 3 week cycle every now and then, I am pulling twice a week now (once from the floor light for triples and once from a rack heavy triples), as well as bench pressing at least once a week, something I normally avoid.

The routine i do now is 5 days a week with 2 rest days, consists of shoulders monday, legs/calves on tues, chest on wed, rest thurs, back fri, and triceps/biceps on sat. I also gradually increase how much i lift every couple of weeks.
So i can keep this same routine (workout those areas of the body on those days), and gradually keep lifting more weight, and my body wont get used to it and i should keep putting on muscle?

KISS IT Keep IT Simple Stupid! LOl ok that said stick to your routine for at least a few weeks, I personally like 6-8 weeks. BUT I also do "mini-cycles" within that 6-8 weeks. Meaning I may do flat bench as my primary chest exercise for 3 weeks, then the next 3 weeks work on my shoulders(they being used in heavy bench as well as Triceps), then in the next 3 weeks do Triceps.....point being keep at it for a while, then take a feww days to a week or more off and start over.

Give yourself 4-8 weeks anyway so you can chart some progress. Changing too soon is rather moronic....
