my 3rd week or so deadlifting.. I'm up to 235ish now, but I have to let my hands catch up to my muscles.

congratulations...deadlift is a lift where u can progress fairly quickly if u keep pushing yourself...as a beginner u can gain couple hundred pounds first year starting out easily...

check out www.gripboard.com to find out new and fun ways to strengthen your hands, wrists, and forarms...to keep up with your other muscles....

Also want to stress how important CHALK is on max sets....you can expect to gain as much as 100lb or more...truly amazing piece of equipment...

Thanks.. that'll be really helpful

You're right about gaining fast.. today I did 225 8 times, according to the one rep max calculator that's about 280 lbs.

This is definitely becoming my favorite exercise.

If only my bench press would increase too.

Evol I would stick to lower reps once you get used to the deadlifts...you can make much better gains lifting in the 1-5 rep range....ditto with bench press if you want to bring it up...(also work on your technique, like arch, foot placement, etc....)...

I agree...bench is way overrated ...I'd rather have a big deadlift or squat any day....

I don't want my bench to come up because of bragging rights or anything-- just because I haven't seen any improvements in my upper body strength in quite some time.

Maybe my lower body just needed to catch up? We'll see. Either that or I'm just stuck to maintaining muscle until I'm done cutting.

wrestler125, let me quote you on a sentence. "So, I purpose a better measure of manhood."
This is kind of funny if manhood is measured in the gym then there are alot of men out there manhoodless. Like the Big Lebowski said; "What makes a man a man, I guess a pair of testicles".
I always like to use my father for an example. Not that he is any more of a man than you or I but he is a man that has achieved feats with his body you or I will never. He would say I purpose a better measure of manhood. Try carring a chain saw that weighs 30-40 lbs. 5 days a week cutting and limbing trees for 6-8 hours through heat and cold for 30+ years then you have proven your manhood. But that is just my fathers way.
2006/08/25, 01:41 PM
jeon it was more tongue in cheek....people are so focused on their bench(even you if I remember right from another post)...that they dont pay much attention to bigger and better exercises like deadlifts....

YOu are right and that's my big downfall in the scheme of weightlifting. It's my favorite thing and I'll never get away from the bench. Like others theirs may be the deadlift. I'm thinking about why I like the benchpress so much more than anything and here is the reason.
When I lie down on that bench I know there is no turning back. Unlike the deadlift or any other exercise I can think of off the top of my head. What I mean by no turning back is. Knowing that I have the strength so Can I lift the weight off of my chest or do I scream for help like an inexperienced weightlifter who doesn't know his limit. THis has gone way off topic.

I agree with you to a degree jeon, but I still think it is a "BETTER measure of manhood" than the bench press by far.

You brought up the point of working outdoors and life. Well when in life will you be lying on your back pushing something away from your body?
Now, when will you be picking up something heavy off the ground?

you should be able to hit 405 when you attempt again. maybe you should do squat tho instead this week cuz i find if i do my max deadlift 2 weeks in a row i get real burnt out. so i do squats with a max deadlift day every 2 weeks or so. just a thought....

Well to keep me accountable, Push/Pull nationals this year will be held in King of Prussia, outside of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.

I will be opening with 405 and moving on from there depending on how I feel. I hope to break 450.

I'll be lifting in the 148's.

Yea well I'm only at 158, so 10lbs in water weight won't kill me.

Then I have 5 months to work up to 175 in preparation for my next strongman, and eventually nationals.

First try I missed, waited a minute then ripped of 2 reps.....To say the least it felt heavy, my form was a bit off. But in the end IT WAS AWESOME!!! Today is a DE leg day and I feel like either front or box squats and some speed pulls!

Well since you will be working through the weights from your surgery, now would be the perfect time to get your form dead on.

did some trap bar dl on monday. pulled 425 easily. my rest periods were shorter than normal but i actually got 465 off the ground but stuck about 2in off. i think it was more a bad form thing as i hadnt brought in enough air and probably needed some more rest...

Make sure you are warming up properly mutt.

I buckled on the second rep of 405 from the rack the other day. Dropping down again and probably not pulling over 365 from the ground until competition. I aim for mid-400's.

a-maze-ing Wrestler and Coolnatedawg. I hurt my lower back (not exercising, I have been traveling and working 14-17hr days for almost 6 months now) almost 2 months ago.

Last week I was able to start again. My deadlift dropped 65lbs, from 285lbs/6/6/6 to 220lbs/7/7/6. Other exercises suffered too.. squat went from 385/12/12/12 to 310/12/12/12 and I gained weight too.. nicht gute! But I am on the way back!!! :dumbbell:

OK after a few months I finally got 365x1 belt and chalk used...missed 385 twice. 2nd time was just about at my knees and I could feel my back "rounding" so I dropped it. next time for sure.
