it's healthy...

good amount of protein per glass(~8), high % of daily calcium (which helps control appetite and build strong bones), it's also fortified with vitamin D ...

not essential though...lots of other sources for all these nutrients

The thing to remember about milk produced by mammals is that it is tailor-made for each species. So, naturally, cow's milk is a concentrated source of nutrients because it is intended to enable a calf to grow into a several hundred pound cow in a matter of months. After infancy, the cow no longer needs the milk and gets it's nutrients and calcium from the plants it grazes on. When was the last time you saw a cow drinking cow's milk?

My deterrant from cow's milk is the additional cholesterol taken in (no matter how low in fat it might be). So, if you up your intake of milk, be sure to watch the additional amount of cholesterol taken in as well.

In it's place I use Light Soy Milk, Rice Milk and Almond Milk. They are vitamin fortified as is cow's milk. But milk certainly is not necessary to be healthy.

Everyone's body is different, but here's my 2% of a dollar:

I LOVE milk! I go through a gallon every day to day and a half. As far as the label goes (for NF): 0g of fat; less than 5mg of cholesterol (less than 1%); 12g of carbs, mostly from lactose, which is only a on 46 the GI scale (even less than oatmeal!); and 9g of protein (80% casein, 20% whey).

I drink about a gallon every 3 days or so and my cholesterol is better than most people who drink no milk.

Did I miss something?

I think madbrenda just said that she uses Soy Milk in regular milk's place as an alternative. Not that it is for baby Soyians or anything.

All I was merely trying to do is explain why cow's milk is such a concentrated source of nutrients.

Never liked it. And can't even have it in my coffee, unless it is a cappuccino! Like Menace said..."nonessential".

Isn´t soya milk high in phyto-oestrogens (and therefore a bad idea for bodybuilders)?

I don't think so. We eat these phytoestrogens all the time. All flax products contain it, its in oats, bran, wheat, lentils, some veggies and all soy products. They may actually have beneficial effects. Research suggests that due to the much lower estrogenic effects of phytoestrogens compared to human oestrogen they may actually partially block human oestrogen receptors possibly reducing the risk of cancers such as prostate and breast also Osteoporosis and heart disease. There is no evidence that I have seen to confirm that phytoestrogens are linked to any sinister health problems, but if you look at the Asian populations of the world that consume high quantity’s of soy products on a daily basis, they do seem to enjoy the benefits as mentioned above, and contra to some beliefs, male and female hormone levels and reproductive systems do not seem to show any negative effects in these country’s although the cultural difference of these people should not be overlooked. My take on this is that so far the case for phytoestrogens looks good but there is some science trying to prove that there are negative effects such as increased risk of other cancers and infertility but nothing conclusive has been proved as far as I am aware. If any one knows different please chip in.

Soy protein will not help you 'bulk' up, but is a good aid if trying to keep lean muscle mass and lose weight.

I meant lose fat. It's all a matter of preference, not which is best or not, as with everything, find what works for you! :-)

Most of the beneficial compounds in soy are destroyed during pastuerization anyways. In Japan they don't pastuerize soy products, so that may be why it has been more beneficial in their culture - but quoting those studies has certainly sold a lot of soy milk in the USA.

I am not a big milk fan, but it can be a good source of nutrients. There is a lot of controversy over milk, try doing a google search and you will come up with rabid milk- haters and some equally rabid pro-milk drinkers.
As madbrenda said, it is a matter of finding what works for you.

I am a freak, I mix protein podwer and peanut butter into my creal when i have dry cereal and add just enough water to make it mix up. My oatmeal doesn't need extra moisture - mixing in the whey protein makes it very creamy.

I'm actually not a huge consumer of milk either. Not a big fan of it, never drank much of it, but I do love to cook/bake. :-)
