Ok this one got me kinda confused. Do you eat after or before when you lift weights and working? Whats the best way.

I eat a mix of carbs and protein before (sandwich, quesodilla, etc), then a high protein item after. You want protein after for your muscle repair and recovery.

I eat after a work out. I try to save all the energy I can for weights. Eating before can rob a good amount of energy, which could've been used to dish out that one last rep or so on that last set.

I eat after. My goal is to lost a significant amount of fat. I don't know if I'm right, but I've always thought that not eating before forces my body to use fat stores for energy, burning them away. Then I eat a meal after with high protein and a small amount of low glycemic carbs to replenish my body.

I'm with Gwin. But I have heard/read that one should eat before strength training in order to get the most out of it - especially if working out first thing in the AM. Otherwise, (I've heard) that fasting all night will mean your lifting will be less productive (less energy, less work, less intense). I guess this makes sense, but personally, I just can't eat before working out early in the AM. I say, try it and follow your body's lead.

I eat high-carb/high protein before, high-protein after. If you ever feel like you're going to pass out, that's your stomach calling you stupid for not feeding it :D All current literature suggests that at least some protein before is good, if you don't want to load up on carbs, but carbs help you lift and do more, and protein repairs.

What if you are not hungry AT ALL after your workout? I workout from 7 - 8:30 p.m. and eat a small amount carbs/protein before my workout and come home so tired that all I want is WATER!!

I have been eating an apple with peanut butter before and am just too tired after to eat. Do you think maybe a protein drink would be good after?

Sure it is...there are few absoultes in this business....try out some different things and see. Of course some nice chicken breasts/steak etc would be the best but if all you can get down is a shake by all means have one.

Thanks for the info. I tried actually eating a meal (although it was small) before working out and I did not get sick but I had no energy!! Last night my trainer started me out (after my 30 min elliptical) doing 51 crunches (9 sets, first 3 was upper abs 15 reps, second 3 lower abs 15 reps and last 3 was on the "tall chair" looking thing of 3 sets 7 reps. If I had eaten more than my apple, I don't think I would have felt too well after that and THEN I went on to my lower body workout for 45 more minutes.

I eat a bit before because I find if I don't I totally can't finish my reps. I am so much weaker if I'm even the slightest bit hungry. But it is a fine line- if I eat too much I feel sluggish. After I always have a protein shake.

About one hour before(little carbs) and within 20 minutes after (high protein).

I eat constantly........LOL!

Seriously, I have a high carb and protein meal/shake about an hour before my workout, and drink a 2:1 carb to protein shake within 30 minutes of finishing, followed up by a high protein/medium carb real food meal about an hour after that.
