Have you ever done deadlifts? I mean, have you gone into the gym thinking like. "ok today is deadlift day!"? No? Do you think ok today is leg day squats is next? I do Deadlifts for me is the squat for my back. I think that there is no other exercise like it in the world. I fear it, hate it, and love it. I look forward to deadlifts like a child looks for candy. It is a drug and i am hooked. Tonight I go forth to do battle with it. I feel nervous, like I was before my first real kiss. I will be singularly focused tonight to get a certain weight for 1 rep. This is the key for future deadlift workouts. I feel that this exercise could in fact have its own day if I could find the time. I must hit this weight, there is no question i am ready for it, just a question if my mental state will be strong enough to get it done. I picture it now as i sit here waitng for the time to go lift to appear. The bar is loaded 4 plates on each side, it is resting on the floor. I see a face froma nightmare on the bar, it appears to be laughing at me, mocking me, taunting me to try to lift it. I walk over squat down and set my hands. I breath deeply eyes not really in the present, mind tightening down to a narrow laser sharpend beam of utter concentration. I take another breath, and lift it off the floor, I struggle, feeling the bar scrap my shins bloddy, I feel the titanic strain on my arms, grip, shoulder, all over as the bar clears my knees. I stand up and pull the shoulders back, sweat running in a flood down my face, veins bulging on my neck I lock it out and lower it to the floor. It is done! The battle is over and I have beaten the demon, it no longer taunt me, but rather sulks away to wait till next week. For it never really is defeated, just beaten back for a time. I wipe my brow, my whole body is afire with a righteous blaze of accomplishment. Then, I realize that next time, next time is fast approaching for battle. I must stand ready each time to defeat the deadlift.-------------- deadlifts rule!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Ok mutt, I had to look into this because of all the references you make to your 'demon'. Let me just say that the visual imagery in itself is an inspiration to me. That was one vivid post my man. I'm gonna go try to pick up something really heavy now. Thanks.

I have a love/hate relationship with deadlifts. I love the way they feel and the effect they have. However, I hate them because I usually spend so much attention trying to get my form right that I don't focus enough on the lift. The deadlift (along with the snatch) is one of those movements that I'm never sure if my form is right, and that's why I sometimes hate them. But boy are they fun!-------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

Today I did deadlifts for the first time. I had always been embarassed to do them because I was just a beginner and felt like I'd make a fool of myself or something.
Well it was actually pretty okay. I didn't feel much burn though. I couldn't do a lot of weight because it really hurt my hands, blister got pretty big. Maybe if I get some weight lifting gloves. |

Thanks Angel, but I was inspired that day to say the least. evol, those blisters are a badge of success. All I can say is this. I was a very introverted child. I read more than I should have LOL and I was fat, very fat. AS a result I did very badly in gym class, got picked on etc. I developed the dreaded "man-boobs" at 14 and that made my life a living hell. It also caused major depression that really came close to claiming my life a few times.
It was not till 1994 in college I started workingout. I met a friend Ken, that was a weightlifter and took me under his belt. I learned the basics from him. Right from the start at the school gym and at home during the summers I did the basics, bent rows and deadlifts were about all i could do for back. They have since become my best and favorite exercises. I started dead lifting just 115lbs. SO I totaly know what it is like to be a beginner and all. It just takes time and a lot of effort and the realization that this never ends! I use visulation techniques at night where I see the bar loaded with the plates, the chalk is flaoting in the air like little snowflakes. I "see" other people in the gym but can not hear them. All I hear is my heart pounding as I walk up to the bar. That carries over to the gym as well. I focus on that one rep for that moment. Nothing else matters. Also I have learned that missing a rep is ok and that makes me that much more fired up next time. All in all this exercise has taught me that this fat man that thought at times (still do every now and again), that he was/is worthless, it has taugh me that I am good at this and there are not that many guys that are better. This is a HUGE thing for me when you realize that the only thing I have ever been better at than almost everyone is Trival Pursuit and reading books! LOL So in conclusion just stick with in and keep lifting! -------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! The Men and Boys are Separated by one thing: The Squat Cage! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

I hate reading things like this at a times like these. I am deloading, so I am not allowed to touch heavy weight, and I am not planning on dling as a ME exercise for at least 2 weeks.

Question about deadlifting--
when loading the plates onto the barbell, is there any kind of technique or trick? Loading them on the ground and taking them off isn't quite as easy. |

Mutt, you get my PM? I want to be there when you do pull it. I'll save the platform for you.
Here's a sweet trick. If you don't have a loader, put a 5lb weight under the first plate you put on. That should give you enough clearance to get any other plates on. -------------- Iron and chalk. |
2006/07/08, 04:21 AM
Yep....that's what I do....get a plate on per side then put the plates on 2.5lb weights and slide the rest of the plates on the bar....
Also u can get rid of the blisters most of the time if u use chalk and grasp the bar solid so it doesnt move in your hand..... Also I do not suggest high rep sets to 'feel the burn'....deadlifts are best done for reps of 5 or less.... Mutt good luck with the deadlift.....I am sure u'll get up some serious weight.... | |

I got back into the 400's friday night. I pulled 405 which went up very easy, so I went for a 455. Missed it twice not sure why. I broke it off the floor, but as I reached my knees I lost the arch in my lower back and that was that. LOL it felt real good getting back to a 400lb lift thought.-------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! The Men and Boys are Separated by one thing: The Squat Cage! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Ah, I feel weak! I'm only doing like 8 reps of 225.. and I'm 235 pounds.
Then again this is only my third time doing deadlifts and I'm on a fat loss program. Either way, I'm really starting to see your passion for deadlifting. I really enjoy it-- it feels good. I do feel like my muscles can lift more than I am though. The only problem is my hands.. hurts them. Also, when I did heavy weight today I started seeing sparkles all over.. you know that weird thing that happens sometimes for whatever reason. |
