After enough poking, prodding, and nagging from my wife, I have finally decided to go to the chirporactor. I have a nagging pain from my neck to the middle of my back. How does everyone feel about the chiropractor? Recommend or not? Care to share any experiences?

My wife has gone to one before and it helped her alot. Though I think a good massage therapist might do just as much, don't know how your wife might feel about it.

I will get to it as soon as I am done lifting.

I have been to a chiropractor.. When they crack you, it does feel good, but then they wanted me to go to them 3 times a week, at 25 bucks a pop.. And I did that for about 2 weeks, but realized I didnt feel any different. I would get my neck and back cracked , I would feel great, and then a few hours later, my back would hurt again. I stopped working out for a few weeks, got a full massage, and then waited, without going back to the chiropractor.. I never went back to him and my back is fine now.
But my situation might be different than what yours is. I would give it a try a few times to see if you like the results.

Yo Hec,

Some folks swear by chiropractors, some swear at them. I'm in the former category. I've had 2 separate experiences and both were very helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to go again if needed. Perhaps I was fortunate. I've heard horror stories, too. I guess it's like medical doctors, barbers, or car salesmen... there are good ones and bad ones. Let the buyer beware!

BTW, a while ago I tried 8 weeks of physical therapy for my back, neck and shoulder with no relief. Chiro brough instant relief and laying off the heavy weights for a while got me back to 100%.

Good luck...

I got my first adjustment today, and I already feel better. The doc told me that it will normally feel good for the first 24-48 hours. He was amazed by the x-rays of my lower back. Said that my hips were in perfect line and that my spine was straight up and down like it should be (from the front). The side view of my neck was a different story. The neck should have a curve in it like a backward c, mine was the complete opposite. This explains my pain in the neck and mid back. I hope that it can get better with his help.

Fortunately for me, I found a chiropractor that was great! Sometimes it may take a couple of sessions before you find someone whom you feel comfortable in cracking your bones!LOL...In any event, after my sessions I would go to the whirlpool and do some light stretching. That seemed to help tremendously!

I think chiropractors can be good in some instances, but I am of the opinion that they try and "keep you forever" as a patient even after the problem has been solved. (Maybe I am just cynical) I must admit after having my daughter my sciatic nerve was really giving me grief, so I went and had adjustments done at that time. It did seem to help a little but they tried to push me to keep me coming for regular appt.'s so I never got over my skeptism.

Good luck

Hec - the same thing with my neck. i think if i wasn't married i would marry my chiropractor..well, except he is married.. i tried to talk my hubby into going to chiropractic school, no dice.
But tenorsaxman is right, there are awesome chiros and terrible chiros.

I think the right chiropractor can be immensely beneficial.

Azon - we abuse our bodies every day - you would be suprised how beneficial weekly adjustments are, but if you don't have insurance coverage for it, it can be daunting. they really are just looking out for your best interest, though.

I've gone to a chiropractor for years - generally twice a year for a tune up. My chiropracter was invaluable during a few specific crises. I believe my overall health has benefitted from chiropractic.

I'll bring issue with the comment about wanting to "keep you forever". Much of chiropractic is retraining for your spine and supporting muscles, repairing the bad training we've done to ourselves over years. This can take more than 3 visits.

Another comparison is to conventional MD's. My chiropractor helps me maintain my health at about 20% of what a regular MD charges to fix a specific illness. Hmmm.

I agree, not all practitioners of any field are good - I've been lucky to find good chiropractors - and MD's too.

Hello all.. I love chiropractic adjustments as they are called.. not like some of you who refer to it as back cracking:(
Anyway for all the sceptics who think that a chiropractor tries to keep you there.. it's for good reason. Do you just go to see your dentist when you have a toothache?? I think most ppl have regular care same with their eyes. Why should your back be any different??? Your spine is your central nervous system and your vertabrea ARE meant to move, so naturally through daily activity, not to mention training your bound to become subluxated.
I am a firm supporter.. my baby girl had her first visit @ 3 weeks old.. she is now 2 and has an adjustment every 4-6 months. She has never been sick other than having a comon cold or two.
The bottom line is most people are not educated enough about it and MD's are too busy prescribing pills that treat the symptoms rather than the cause.
Sorry that was so long.:)

BTW- I noticed in another chiro post some referrance to insurance coverage. This should not be a deciding factor for your health! It may be costly @ first because you should see a chiropractor frequently.. but, in the long run you will only have maintnance care. I'm sure $25-$50 a month is worth your well being. It amazes me how ppl are quick to spend money on cars and cosmetic things but they hesitate on their health.

Where is that gorgeous Hec and his stud Charlie...lol(is that better Charlie?)

Hec - I just went to the chiropractor last night for the first time. I have been having troubles with my lower back when I stand for long periods of time. I decided after 10 years of karate and 12 years of off and on working out I should go get adjusted.

My question is did your doc say to not work out for a couple of days? I was told not to for three days. That sucks cause I just had most of last week off cause I went camping. I worked out Monday and Tuesday now I can't workout till Sunday or Monday.

BTW I won't be doing this too often my ins. doesn't cover it so my first visit was 100 next visit's are 40.

Did he take x-rays? My adjustments are for my neck and the pain I was having in my mid back. He never told me to not workout. He told me I may be sore for a few days, but that was it. I have to admit, after four adjustments the pain is practically gone. My chiropractor has given me a good deal and I am happy with him.

She didn't do x-ray's nothing was REALLY hurting me just a little achy when I stand for a long time. She went through my range of motion on everything and said it looked good. I pop'ed like hell though. I forgot to have her do my neck though.

It is not your responsibilty to tell her what part of your body to adjust. Dude you might want to look into getting a different chiropractor.

Hec,
You might ask your chiro about the countour pilows. I don't remember the brand of ours, but after a car accident 2 years ago, my chiro gave us really nice contour pillows. The insurance paid about $50 each for them. They allow you to lay on your back or either side with proper neck alignment. We LOVE ours. The only issue is if you sleep on your stomach. Then it's not too comfy. :(

Those pillows are AWESOME! (I know you said that he's fixed the neck, but . . .) If you have that reverse curve in your neck, your pillow is the first thing my chiro would say to look at. Do you use more than one pillow when you sleep? Your neck needs to be supported while your head is laid back. If you use a regular pillow, then your head is being tilted up at an unnatural, unhealthy angle.

Just a thought (or two).

Lance,
You might go back a couple more times before switching. It's possible that she was simply focussing on where you said the problem was. Maybe on the next visit she'll adjust your neck. Also, my chiro is an extremities specialist, so he does my wrists and feet every time. My wife, sister, and I all avoided Carpal Tunnel Surgery thanks to him.

I am a chiropractic student right now and although this may seem a little bias, chiropractic does work. There are many stereotypes about my profession, due to a lack of public knowledge of what chiropractors actually do. The body has the inborn ability to heal itself and the goal of chiropractic is to assist the body in healing by removing any interferences one may have in the nervous system. I encourage all of you to at least do some research and find out for yourselves the overall health and wellness advantages of chiropractic.
