I joined the gym yesterday and my first day is today. I am going shopping for some work out attire, but am not sure what to buy, or where. I have target, tj maxx, ross, Kohls, Norstrom Rack, DSW and Sports Authority to shop at.

I am 240, 36DD, size 16-18...HELP! what clothes and what shoes?

Thanks so much!

Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack!

I wish everyone would get a partial amnesia and never use 'tone' ever again. (thanks Menance)

Dana, start out with a couple pairs of light weight cotton capris (elastic waist, work out type) and a light weight t-shirt. I buy almost all of my workout clothes at Walmart or Target. I won't splurge on the expensive clothes. Unlike SOME people at the gym, I'm not there for a fashion show, I'm there to get down and dirty (and SWEATY!). I don't think I would feel right sweating in a $100 Nike tank from Sports Authority. hee hee.

More importantly is you do not need the 100$ stuff

Thank you for all of the advice! I got the elastic capris and some new balance running shoes at Marshalls for $22! I will just borrow some of hubby's shirts!

And don't forget, it isn't a fashion show at the gym, you are there to work out and achieve your goals...as long as you don't smell, it is all good. JUST NO SPANDEX! hehe...

I just wear anything that is worn out. Old t-shirts that I won't wear out make up the bulk of my workout wear.

I love wearing polo's in the gym, they keep my neck warm while I'm doing pull ups.

A good pair of running shoes is worth investing in. As for gym clothes, like everyone else has mentioned old t-shirt or a tank top is fine, however if you can afford the nice gym clothes why not buy em. As long as you arent going to the gym with tons of makeup and jewlery on, there is no reason why you cant invest in some good gym clothes if you can afford to do so.

What is most important is that you wear whatever you feel most comfortable in.

yeah some people look good in it...MAYBE...even the nice, taunt, fit bodies...but again it goes back to, are you there to work out or there to wear attire that will accommodate your work out? I am sorry but pulling the spandex pants out of my ass isn't very accommodating, nor is the spandex top that continuously climbs up my back and I am constantly having to pull it down. Sure, some people might like that but she was asking for proper attire for working out. Believe me, if I could work out in the nude and not even bother with clothing, I would possibly do that. But not only would I want to horrify myself, I would want to cause anyone else permanent eye damage either! :)

Ok, since we are on the topic of "bad work out clothes". I have to say this, and Karma will bring me back as something horrible in my next life for being mean, but I can't help it.
There are two regulars that come into my gym. The tanning bed fart guy, who comes in to work out in cut off jean shorts, and I mean CUT OFF, where the pockets peek out the bottom (and I'm afraid other things will peek out soon), construction boots, and a denim shirt with ripped off sleeves tucked in with a huge belt buckle. He's also got big hair and a big 70's porno mustache.
The other guy who comes in, wears red SPANDEX (AHHH, we all know about spandex) shorts, a tank top, knee socks, wrist and head sweat bands and safety goggles OVER his glasses with the cord thing to hold them on. His routine consists of going over to the weight area in front of the mirror and will do a Richard Simmons warm up (you know, swinging his arms from side to side while jogging in place) then runs over to the stationary bicycle. He sets the thing on 0 tension and gets on and pedals so fast that he continuously falls off and has to get back on. Then after a minute or two, he'll jump off, go get a drink of water, stretch some more and then jump back on at warp speed and fall off a few more times.
It's that point where I have to go to the restroom and giggle to myself. It would be mean to laugh in his face! It's much nicer to make fun of him on the internet. lol I know that I should not pay attention to these people, it's a sign that I'm not focusing on my own workout. But, come on. I'm only human and when the short bus pulls into the gym I can't help but look. :)

There are a few in every gym, Amy...one can only hope we aren't included as one of them:)

When I was on vacation there was a woman in the gym up there every morning - she came in in full make-up, overly tight leggings and t-shirt, and about a gallon of perfume applied liberally. I literally had to switch cardio machines when she placed herself on the elliptical next to mine. Then she coasts through her workout, reading magazines, never breaking a sweat or even breathing heavy (wouldn't want to mess up her make up, I guess).

Let the gym faux pas discussion commence

Okay - I have to do one on myself.... I have this pair of workout pants, they are very low riding and I only wear them on days where no bending down type movements are required because they slide right down my butt and reveal my underwear (luckily I wear underwear)..anyhow - I had forgotten that I was switching shoulder day and leg day to train shoulders with my trainer...so I wore the pants, thinking it was shoulder day, no problem...it was leg day - I just had to power through the squats as my pants fell down revealing my leopard skin underwear , more and more with each rep.... luckily there were only a few people in the gym, but at least one guy looked a little disturbed and I am sure my face was bright red, though not just from exertion.... nothing like pretending that everything is perfectly normal when everyone can see your ass:surprised:

Amy, that's awesome! At least you gave the people at the gym something to look at! lol. If my pants fell down in the gym people would scream and run "Oh my god! What IS that in those giant white granny panties!?" lol
