Just out of curiosity, why should you never drink alcohol before a workout, aside from the obvious fact that over consumption of alcohol is bad for you. Is it just a dehydration issue or are there some other highly technical dynamics going on?

its dehydration and also alcohol is a depression drug. It will make your body slow down a bit and your reflexes will be slower...During a workout your heart is pumping really fast, because your doing lots of cardio exercises...but when you have alcohol in your system the heart beats alot slower. And when you do all these exercises and your heart beats slow your body starts to panic because the heart isn't pumping enough blood to satisfy the bodys needs do to exercising which could lead to passing out...

there has also been several reports on how alcohol interferes with nutrient absorbtion (decreased protein synthesis by at least 20%, for example), and anabolic/catabolic functions, especially the blockage of IGF-1.

You can do a search for beer or alcohol and find two pretty good threads out there... also if you goto the under 25 forum and check out the "Balancing the Party" thread there is some info that cain and some other people toss around about drinking and how it works against you working out... probably nothing as well as what rev told you though.. but I don't remember...

Good post Michael! You beat me to it...
Alcohol also increases cortisol, which is a muscle-wasting anti-anabolic chemical secreted into your bloodsteam when you are under stress. Alcohol is also stored in bodyfat. Its 7 calories per gram are 'empty' calories, which simply means they have absolutely ZERO nutritional value. Knowing this, I would bet that you won't see too many 250lb bodybuilding alcoholics.
