I have heard a number of ways to enlarge your rib cage, but what is the safest and most effective way
for a young (16 y-o) to do it without stunting growth etc.

well none have been proven scientifically... but breathing squats are thought to be the best rib cage expansion exercise

I prefer pullovers. They give you an awesome stretch and there doesn't seem to be anything detrimental about them. Flyes will also expand your ribcage a bit.

breathing squats not only expand your rib cage, but a recent study showed that the 17 year old test subjects who performed breathing squats for 6 weeks added an average of 15 pounds of muscle.

I agree completely with this. Not much better than heavy pullovers. Resisting the stretch is key.

Also fascial stretching. When you have a heavy pump on chest, when it feels like the chest is very tight, do some extreme stetching. There are a few ways to do this, I prefer to put my arms between the power rack or smith machine, and pull forward very slow and deliberately and hold that stretched out position till it hurts!! Have your chest "puffed" out when doing this.

So, BB1, Breathing squats are similar to incline pushup with a strong stretch and timed breathing thrown in?

I'm picturing doing pushups in the squat machine while standing up. Are you using the verticle (up/down) bars or the horizontal bar for your support? I'm picturing this working with a doorframe for the home exercisers.

Is this correct? Should we experience any skeletal pain in the chest region during this expansion process?

Thanks.

No, I did not refer to breathing squats in my post at all! When using squat machine for support, I was referring to fascial stretching with a massive chest pump for expanding the "sac".

You could do dumbbell stretches too, in a fly position, I don't do these due to I have a shoulder problem, and these really "pull" on my left shoulder, where stretching between the squat rack or power rack works well and allows me to really puff out my chest, which is key in the stretch. Takes a little practice, but you should feel it very well. You may indeed experience some pain, this is a technique that depends on the individual.

Yup! After rereading your post, I see that I did totally miss that. I'll have to talk to the guys over at the gym to have them show me this.

Thanks.

Here, you can have mine! Once upon a time when I was a skinny runt my rib cage stuck out and my boyfriend would think it was funny to grab me by my ribs as you could grab them my stomach was so thin and my ribs large! Of course, now I don't have to worry, it has become more filled in over time, lol!!

According to basic human anatomy, its not possible. From what I understand, wnts your bones calsifiy You can change the shape much, without breaking them and resetting them.

On the other hand I think you can "stretch" the rib cage, and help with lung capacity, and make it appear larger when you breath.
