I havent had surgery, but there may be some other intitial, and less invasive ways, to attempt to relieve the pain. Ask your Dr about another method, where you lie on a table and they slowly stretch your torso, creating a "vacuum" effect, allowing the disc to be pulled back in. I cannot remember the name of the procedure off hand, but it is FDA approve for medical (it's NOT chiropractic) back treament, and it's available here in Vegas.
If you have the opportunity to avoid surgery, DO IT! It is not a "quick-fix" for the pain or the damage, and is quite invasive and extensive. When I was a surgical tech, I saw many of these procedures done, and 90% of the time, they are accompanied by complications.
