Wanted to throw out something to my fellow FT'ers. I was invited yesterday to enter a strongman contest...of course I would be competing against folks my bodyweight.
I am thinking of doing this, big change from bb competitions. No dieting involved for one! I was approached probably being watched doing the 120's for dumbbell bench presses. Most folks much larger than me do not come near those. I am only 5'7". Anyway, just a thought..... -------------- Strength and Honor! |

bb1, do it with me. I have just started training, theres a thread in the powerlifting forum describing my journey. I'm training for the pittsburgh strongest man in 06.
Unfortunately for me, I am competing against people much larger than me (231 and under) but I have been holding my own with the training weights. I can do every event except for the log press atm, but with a little work on my push press I should have it. I think it would be refreshing to go from aesthetic training to strength training. Especially since I know you are already from the "power builder" era. -------------- Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. I've had the privledge of watching you workout so this is a no brainer...Do it. This is what is classically known as a gimme.
Like you mentioned it may do you a bit of good to do something a little differrent. for a change. Just let me know who's taking the bets. Best of luck! -------------- Seize the day! |

Wrestler, that would be cool. The only thing I am concerned with is my knees are starting to get worn out. Feeling some discomfort pretty regularly these days.
I will be fine with the push presses by the way, another good lift for me. I started my training as wrestler stated with power lifters, and have always kept a power lifting mentality, even when bodybuilding. It may well be fun, and a different route. I do love that stuff, been wating WSM sponsored by MetRx for a long time, Mario Pudenowski....however you spell it, is just awesome. -------------- Strength and Honor! |

Just say Mariuz P. We'll know who you mean.
Myself, I am a fan of Kaz. First time I ever saw a WSM. Its was a keg loading event, loading kegs into the truck. The whistle goes off, and the other contestants start picking up the kegs, hoisting them into the truck. Kaz looks at the truck. He looks at the kegs. He grabs a keg. Looks back at the truck. He then turns, and proceeds to start throwing the kegs in. Rediculus. Only reason log press would be difficult is its a close grip push press of 185lbs, and I only weigh around 150 competiting against 200+lb competitors. I've always had bad shoulders, and never trained overhead as much as I should have. 185 will be tough, but I think by the time of the contest I might be able to crank out a few reps. I think you should do it, and I encourage anyone else that can get involved in one to try it out. It's defianetly going to be a learning experiance, and it would be great to be learning with my fellow FT members.
If you decide to do it, I just learned a cool trick for completing the turn on the farmers walk I might be willing to share. -------------- Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. Charlie, I can always count on you. Thanks for the glucosamine offer..believe me, have plenty.
I believe mine is more connective tissue problems. I did legs yesterday. First couple sets hurt, even light warmups. But after 4 sets or so, they felt great. Could easily have hit my highest weights, but backed off trying to save on the knees. Did not matter though, about an hour after my workout, my knees were killing me and I suffered through the night at work. Muscle strength is easily there....just connective tissue will not handle it anymore. ============ Quoting from charlie826: Go for it Ron. Because I see a lot of different things...some contests allow straps during deadlifts for reps, I also see wraps, belts, etc...sticky chalk....etc...this is why I was wondering

Tires should not be a problem. I can get a 700lber up and into position. We have one that is 975lb that most of us can not budge. Important thing is to drive forward rather than pull back like a deadlift, that way the front of the tire can catch to flip.
You have to clean in between reps? That blows. We have to do a log press, but then I can just jerk it, rather than a clean and jerk. I have gotten my jerk so fast that I have about a 4" total range of motion to lockout. The other day I was attempting 175 and didn't get it, everyone was like "You almost had that." Some guy comes over and is like, "he barely budged it." So 30 seconds later I pop back in, lock it out. Also, a log can be continentaled, so its easier to get into position. Most NAS contests allow straps for the DL for reps. Chalk is allowed everywehere. Axle press (clean), canoe pull, tire flip, deadlift, farmers walk... They're not showing your grip much mercy. -------------- Iron and chalk. Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run. |

Well, thanks for all the positive feedback folks. After assessing my knee problems, I did legs again today, and strength is not the issue, but I don't think my knees would do well under the deadlift load for certain.
They really are becoming an issue now, not just a nusiance an longer. Working around things as best I can. I had just started dieting also, and so it came down to if I wanted to continue the diet or not, as well as the knees. -------------- Strength and Honor! |
