I hate being pessimistic, but I’m curious: How many people will log onto this site looking for advice and in a couple of days you never hear form them ever again? One of the most popular resolutions is to get in shape and it has been for years. But people don’t stick to it. It’s hard. If it were easy, we would not be facing an obesity problem in the world.

Please, if you are new and made the resolution to get fit, slim down, bulk up, etc, make your goals REALISTIC!!! Many people cannot stick to their resolution (a promise to themselves) because the goal is unrealistic and unattainable. If you made a resolution and you’re committed to changing for the better, congratulations. You are on your way to a happier, healthier lifestyle.

Well just because they post here once or twice looking for advice doesn't mean that they aren't getting it elsewhere.

But I do understand what you're saying; I see a lot of one-posters in the forums as I'm browsing and it does get annoying.

I've had to put off my resolution for a little bit; can't get started until I get my cast off (I could if I had a gym membership around my house, but I have one at the Y by my college) and go back to college (Jan 16).

But I'm taking the time to plan my workouts and diets while I've got the time off. I wouldn't be able to stick to it if I hadn't.

Ugh. I hate this time of year. Not to sound pessimistic, but the month of january is the WORST time to workout in a public gym. The commercials are all about "getting fit" and gym membership skyrockets with these "resolutioners."

I swear, if there is someone doing aerobics in my squat rack again, someone is getting hurt...

LOL I had one person come up to me last night asn ask what I was doing (deep squats). I had to laugh. Our Y has taken in over 500 new people since the 1st. It may be time for Old Mutt to use the Dungeon in the Basement.

Don't worry mutt - I think that's what JB was referring to. You won't see 475 of them by the end of the month.

I'm about ready for a bunch of them to give up...my gym isn't big enough for all these people. I find my self having to modify my routine every 15 minutes cause someone is on something I need and when they're done with it they usually sit there for another 10 minutes to chat or rest up to walk to some other piece of equipement. That and I had to let he gym know that with the influx of people that the hot water heaters can't keep up...they did something about it cause it was warmer the next day. Oh well...just have to wait it out and things will be back to normal soon.

I can see the money signs in the trainers eyes though. Quite ironic how 3 weeks ago they didn't talk to anyone, but the client they're with...now they're real talkative to all the new people...trying to setup appts and stuff. It's annoying. Could you tell I go to 24 hr fitness?

I don't want any of the new people here to take that the wrong way. If you've made a new years resolution to change your life then terrific. We'll support you in every way we can. However be respective of others at the gym and keep in mind it's not your gym...it's everyone's gym and learn the basic rules and etiquette around the gym.

By all means if my gym getting packed is the price I pay for a healthier nation then by all means I welcome it. As long as everyone realize it's a lifestyle change and not a overnight thing.

My god, I hate January. I will gladly offer advice. I will help you achieve your goals. I can explain to you exactly what to do and why.

BUT DON'T TALK TO ME WHILE I AM LIFTING!

stump, this is the price YOU have to pay. If it wasn't for these guys, your dues would be incredibly expensive. I was in the industry before going to college, and its the month of january that pays the bills for a gym owner.

I really appreciate having the high school gym to work out in. I find that most public gyms are too crowded anytime of the year. Most people who make New Year's resolutions to get into shape can't seem to accept that getting fit and staying fit is a lifestyle change, not something you do for 2 months then stop.

wrestler just stick around the squat rack for a month or two. The new people and half the trainers don't know what that thing is for anyway :)

This is one of the reasons that I go to a 24-hr club where I can workout at 5:00 or 5:30 in the morning. I find very few newbies at that time of the day -- and most of them are more serious than the ones who drop by after work. God forbid that I should be at Bally's this time of the year!

I work out at 5AM and my gym was packed immediately after New Years. It's 2 weeks into the year, so it's died off a lot already.

Yep, we had a little bit of that bubble as well -- but at that time of the day it seems to go away pretty quickly. Something about getting up a couple of hours earlier to go and do something they really don't want to do after all.

Yes it was...guess I shouldn't say to much about it though...I used to be one of those people about 5 years ago.

I don't post here often, but visit often, and have been working out regularly for years. I, too, don't like January at the gym. I already hate crowds, so I usually work out no earlier than 11pm...but this time of the year (as well as the summer months) I try not to get there until after midnight.

Good vibes,
Eric

I workout on my lunch hour (well more like lunch 2-hours ) Things were packed a few weeks ago right after New Years but I think all the resolutioners have given up by now. It's not crowded at all at lunch time now.
