pre cardio meal

I was wondering what a good meal is to eat before cardio and how long i should wait before working out? thanks

Hi Justin22, before cardio in the morning I try to eat an apple 20 min before my exercises. For weight training I usually have a snack 30 - 45 min before my workout.

I am trying to lose fat so I don't eat b4 my cardio. I just have a coffee (great supplement) and a multivit.
It really depends on the purpose of your cardio, But i have a great post workout shake and meal.

Justin it depends on what result you are after. Like Carivan said if you want to loose fat you don't eat and prefferably exercise in the morning first thing because you body has used you primary energy source while you were sleeping to keep ticking. So the next available energy source is fat.

If you are after endurance/fitness then you will want to load complex carbos etc.

cbas, I thought that the body burned various proprtions of fat and alternate sources (glycogen/protein etc) at the same time during exercise - hence the "fat burning zone" - at low intensity a greater proportion of energy comes from fat, at higher intensity a greater proportion comes from the other sources?

Oh, and Justin, if you look in the "cardio questions?" thread, near the end is a list of absorption times of various foods, so as long as you give enough time for the food to be absorbed before you workout, you can choose.

I agree with you cbas, but I am not trying to build mass muscle here. I am trying to get as lean as possible in the time frame that I have, and keep the muscle toned,that I do have, for a 150k ride which is saturday. So the less weight on the bike the better I am for now.

Sorry, bad idea any time! And wrong information. At rest your bodies perferred source of fuel is fat. You would be better off to have a low glycemic meal to keep the fat useage going, and let the cardio and your diet the rest of the day do your fat burning. Doing cardio on an empty stomach will always result in as much muscle loss as fat loss. You will be in a very catabolic state, and this will simply enhance it. I do not for the life of me realize why this is such a hard subject to grasp.

Some people have almost a cult-like fanatisism (which is good) with eating every 2-3 hours, else suffer the ravages of catabolism. Yet, when it comes to pre-cardio, they believe that any gram of any macronutrient is downright evil!

Ok. So if my workout is 2 hours after lunch, and protein shakes are not available (I can't afford to buy one at the gym and have nowhere to store one from home), should I eat my can of tuna before or after the workout? Or should I bring a can for each? I usually eat the tuna straight and plain, with no Mayo.

so steak and rice is not a good idea to eat before cardio? Should i stay away from carbs period when it comes to my pre cardio meal? Does it really matter what time of the day you do cardio?...I would think it wouldn't as long as you eat corectly before and after and keep your daily calories in the right range for you goals.

The main focus of most cardio is to add a caloric deficit. If you do a standard duration cardio, it will not matter if it is early or late. If however you are doing a HIIT style cardio, early is best as the object is raising metabolic rate for the day, (and this has a high anerobic as well aerobic component to it)and this will not serve much purpose late night.

As far as pre cardio meal, again treat it as I mentioned as you would your workout. Have your normal pre workout meal, best consisting of a lean protein source and something like oats would be good. You could always blend up a quick milk, egg, and oat shake and drink it down. Casien pre cardio is fine and good. Wait about 30-45 minutes post cardio and then have a meal consisting of lean protein, complex or fibrous carb, and fierous vggie. Or you can have lean protein, and a good fat source. The object here is to not raise insulin levels in any way.

I think i have my post cardo meal down pat. Ground beef,baked bean,and broccoli with olive oil. how does steak or pork and brown rice sound for a pre cardio meal? As for HIIT i haven't i done it yet i was planning on saving it for when i hit a wall for loosing fat...is this a bad idea? Should i incorporate HIIT into my workout atleast once a week?

HIIT is a good thing to incorporate...throw it in the "mix". Helps keep the body guessing. Switch off, for instance if you do 3 cardio sessions per week, make 2 of them standard duration type cardio of your choice, and throw in one HIIT day. You are thinking correctly with "saving" it, just add it slowly as mentioned. Increase your sessions or time as you need to. Many folks dive head first with tons of cardio and then have nowhere to go but more calorie cuts, and end up in starvation mode. A caloric deficit from any source whether food or exercise will yeild the results you are after.
