Hey, I wanted to share that I went grocery shopping today and took with me everyone's advice! I am so thrilled, do you know for the first time in 12 years I bought groceries for ME, which, of course will be great for my family, too, but for years I have buying things that everyone else "likes" and usually that means I don't eat breakfast, rarely lunch, except some binging fat snacks, and a HUGE supper. Well, I bought items that will increase my protein intake and lessen my carbs. I am going to take my cooking skills and try to relearn so I can make great healthy meals for all of us! I consider myself a great cook, I make great homecooking meals of meat and potatoes w/veggies, but I want to cut back on the fattening features I throw in there for that really good flavor, I am going to experiment with good flavor with less of the fats. It'll take some work, but as long as it tastes good, the family will love it! The store had a sale on meat and I bought plenty of chicken breasts and steak. I got lots of tuna and have to learn to eat it without slobbering it down with tons of mayo. I WILL NOT STARVE ANYMORE!!! I WILL NOT BINGE ANYMORE!!! I walked away from these delicious red cakes (like twinkies) and survived!! I will eat 6 small meals a day! YEAY FOR ME!! I feel lighter already, lol!! I WILL SUCCEED, slowly, crawling to start, but I'll be jogging it before you know it. (Can you tell I am having a happy moment?)

If I may make a suggestion about tuna. I have trained myself to despise mayo, and have started mixing it with dijonnaise. This tastes awesome. I don't put pickles or celery in my tuna the way I have seen some people do, I just leave it plain.

Thats a great attitude and good way to start. We are all here to help you out. You might want to try mixing in some shredded hard boild egg whites with onions into the tuna. Great on grain bread (toasted).

Hmmmmmm...*scratching head*

I apologize for my blank stare, but I don't know what dijonnaise is...? I am up for trying it, but could you explain what it is...you have to remember I have moved to the backwoods of the backwoods in the hills on top of the mountains, so the pickin' is pretty slim as far as groceries go. I remember the days of the metro when I shopped Byerly's and the malls, but here, I must settle for dusting off the produce to find a price, and some I am afraid is older than myself! Anyway, love to know what dijonnaise is as I adore my mayo, but not the calories, fat, etc.

Carivan, I will try that, I like the egg whites cooked and onions are alright, ohhhhh, I'm gonna need some kickin' mouthwash after the tuna and onions, eh! ;)

Thanks CristalBelle, you are always so kind! :)

Dijonnaise also known as Dijon, is a Mustard, a little more pungent then regular mustard and is 0 fat.

I know wht Dijon is!! Okay then, I thought Dijonnaise was a combination of some sort of mayonnaise and mustard!! Hmmm, I will try it, mustard and tuna sounds a bit odd, but every bit worth a shot! Just don't ask me to eat peanut butter and pickles, k?

why not? Imagine this..you hollow out the pickle like a baked potatoe then you fill it with natural peanut butter. Yikes!
I hope you don't take this seriuosly.

yea, sorry about that, I must have sounded like a commercial. It's a name-brand. I tend to do that...refer to sodas as "cokes" and adhesive bandages to "band-aids". Bad habit, I guess. Like Ivan said, it's a dijon mustard, I'll give the nutr. facts... 5 cals. 0 fat. 1g carb. 70mg of sodium. The serving size is pretty small though, so I'd double the numbers to get a real estimate of what you would actually put on a sandwich, unless you use it sparingly (which I don't)

GOod work and good luck!
You wont miss your carbs if you fill up on healthy complex carbs....Oatmeal (slow cook not instant) Whole grain breads and pastas, brown rice, sweet potatoes. And don't forget veggies and fruits are carbs too (and low in calories) There really are a lot of good carb options out there. :)

Great to hear such a positive attitude!!!

I weaned myself off mayo by mixing my mayo with mustard....Then each time I made my tuna I just used less mayo and more mustard, and so on, and so on......Now I like tuna with a little celery seeds and onion powder mixed with a little dijon mustard to hold it all together...Have it on toasted whole grain bread with some lettuce and you won't even miss the mayo!!!

I will most truly try the dijion/mustard idea, I don't have dijion right now, but I will try with regular mustard (I'll check first if it is low on calories, too) this week...wish me luck!!

I am thrilled with the refrigerator stocked with great food! I am going to have oatmeal for breakfast and a very small steak for lunch with the kids and roast for dinner with carrots.

Hey, I hear so much with regard to this Atkins eating that says no fruit for a while, is this good? I always had this little voice in my head (don't tell anyone else, k?) that has whispered that fruit has been a part of humans diet since the dawn of time so it cannot be a bad thing...can I eat fruit, pineapple, kiwi, and such? I also grow peaches, pears and 3 varieties of apples that I love to pick and eat. If eaten in moderation, is this alright? I have changed all our bread in the house to whole grain, I did by the new Sara Lee Delight bread to try which is light in calories - but I noticed it is HIGHER in carbs than their whole grain, what's up with that?
Well, I gotta hurry and finish my posts, there is some good eating to do today and a good workout to look forward too!
Thanks for your continued support and great ideas!!

Fruit is natural, and part of a healthy balanced diet. eat it earlier in the day when you will burn off the calories.

The conflicting info about fruit really applies more to hardcore trainees who are trying to cut out as much sugar, natural or not, as possible for a variety of reasons.

Apples are the bomb!

as for your bread, the carb content isn't really important, it's how quickly the sugar from the carbs gets into your blood stream that's the main issue. Wholemeal is released more slowly than other bread types, keeping a more stable blood sugar (and reducing carb cravings) so it is the better option.
That said it you've made a lot of really positive changes already, so I wouldn't worry about it too much - maybe something to change later on.

That makes sense, thank you, princesslodgey. I decided the change was good for the whole family, and I am lucky to have kids that love their whole grains, fruits and veggies! We'd have these little dinner parties when they were little where I would cut up banana's, apples, grapes and strawberries and put them all on a big plate with a bowl of yogurt for dipping and we would sit on a sheet and watch a video or we'd do the same but with veggies. Now they are older, but we still have the party "plates" from time to time and they still enjoy the "good" foods.

Hey, I ate cereal this morning with no sugar, too! My hubby is picking up the Splendor on his way home for me, and my son and I were talking that we should switch to skim or maybe 1% milk. He drinks about a 1/2 gallon a day, he is 18 and in great physical condition, but the fat content is concerning us. I know there is all the talk about milk being bad...but that is something we won't give up, though I only drink it from time to time, I do like it but don't care for the watered down version...maybe like with the sugar, I can adjust.

I use to despise the fat free milk, but I actually had it the other day with some shredded wheat, and was surprised at how much I couldn't tell the difference between the fat-free and the other stuff. I have been using the fat-free for a while now with my protein shakes (can't stand them with water) and I just recently tried it with cereal. Give it a try, it couldn't hurt. I think my main concern with the fat-free stuff was mental.

Fat free milk does take a little bit of getting used to but it's worth it.
I don't know who said milk wasn't good for you, but once you take out the saturated fat(by having fat free) you are left with a really good source of calcium(especially important for us ladies) and protein.
I think some bodybuilders avoid it because it has some sugar in it, but that's not really a concern for us mere mortals!

Well, I am going to give it a shot and try the fat-free milk, my son agreed it would be in our best interest to give it a try, he is very health regimented! I got the Spenda and was thrilled with the taste - not the cost, though it is well worth it and should last forever! I am still eating what I can without anything and the Splenda is there in case, though I would like to try baking with it, has anyone done that?

I was a die-hard full fat milk lover all my life, it takes some doing but you can come to love the fat-free too, I had to go down in steps but I'm finally there and it is such a relief. Love my glass of milk with dinner!

Here is a site with some tips for baking with Splenda.. while I'm not much of a baker myself, some co-workers do so regularly and we have (usually) been pleased with the results..

I used to love the whole milk and now I can't stand to drink it. You like what you get used to I think. The only problem is getting used to cooking with it. Much more water to deal with.
Whole milk tastes wierd now. Really thick. I just can't drink it anymore. :surprised:

Well, with all your new food in the house, I hope you enjoy trying some new recipes. I love www.epicurious.com for my recipes. In an effort to cut some extra fat in my diet, I turned to recipes with new and wonderful spices. The middle eastern food on this site are wonderful and I usually can find a recipe with some sort of beans (chickpeas or lentils) instead of pasta and potatoes.

Great attitude girl. Keep it up.

Wow! You guys sure know how to encourage one to try new things! I am actually looking forward to getting some 1% milk and then I will go to the skim eventually, I hope! Thank you for the sites with the recipes, I am looking toward cooking up some new things! I grilled chicken for lunch today and the kids were like, "mom, what's up with the grilling at lunch?" They are freaked as I feed them small steak portions and grilled chicken with brochilli, but they are enjoying it immensly! I did make them spagetti for supper and that is something I don't touch so know what I ate? Get this...I ate a tomato, 6.3 carbs, about 40 calories, two dill pickles, zip calories and 2 carbs, a tablespoon piece of chicken, 60 calories, and a slice of watermelon, 80 calories and 11.5 carbs and lots of water. I think I did pretty well and was extremely full, though I believe my husband got ill watching me eat the combinations! He said not to wake him when I needed someone to hold my hair when my stomach rejected it! I was happy, though, when he told me he told the guys at work my inability to eat our traditional bacon/eggs/toast breakfast on Sunday and had a hissy fit because of all the grease! It was nice to hear that he was sharing my stories of success (?). :dumbbell:

Okay, david_s81...I've trusted you thus far...cottage cheese it is!

I wanted to add that I tried regular mustard with the tuna today, but the tuna was too tunaeee - I ate it, though I didn't care for it much, I will try again with Dijon.

If you can develop a taste for cottage cheese , it's a great late night snack. It slow releases protein overnight. Its great with almonds or sunflower seeds. I eat it if I am out of pizza or cupcakes.

I love cottage cheese, just wasn't so sure about it in my pancakes!! I thought it was high in fat so I've been staying away from it pretty much. I can't eat after 6:00 p.m. due to severe acid reflux, I miss those late night snacks - but it's probably for the better in my case:laugh:

I like cottage cheese now and then with onions.

I bought my whey protein mix today, will try tomorrow!

veda - get lowfat cottage cheese - still tastes great! Good with walnuts, too.

You need a piece of chicken the size of a deck of cards - not a tablespoon! Or did you mean you had a serving like that of steak and a small piece of chicken?

You sound like you are doing great!

veda, Dijonnaise IS mayo mixed with mustard, from the Hellman's brand, but is very low in fat and calories. It does not taste as if it contains mustard, so that has to be a good thing. I, too, am cleaning up my diet, and I see lots of tuna in my future... hehe....

asimmer - I did just have a tiny piece of chicken, I just was eating all the other stuff, too, so I only had a little more than a bit size. I was doing great, until my son's graduation party last night, all day I slaved over cleaning, yard work, mowing, etc. and only ate a bowl of oatmeal in the a.m. and then for supper two gross hotdogs because I was to tired to move from in front of them and about 4 Doritos. I hate hotdogs, that is how tired I was! I haven't been able to work out in three days and it has gotten me very pissy. Today I will jump in again, though I must of gotten a good workout doing all my house stuff as my muscles have been killing me for two days straight! Onward and forward....
