Hello all, as the major holidays come upon us I wanted to say hello and ask for your gudiance. I have a long term goal (to be reached in june 04), of losing 60lbs(of fat I hope). I am eating better than ever, but have hit a plateau on losing size. I have stayed the same for about 3months now. My goal is to reach a 42 waist size by june, and hope fully lower than that (my alltime goal is 38). The reason is that my family is having a party to celebrate my dad's 60th bday. ALl my sisters and brothers (I have 3 of each) will be there as well as my Grandmother and aunt etc. ALl they have ever seen is me like I am now with a 50 inch waist. So I want to really surprise them! I DO NOT want to be ripped or have abs showing(too much in to liitle time I think). I do want a 12-15% bf. I am about 25-30 right now. SO my plan is to really clean the eating ( I hate the word diet) up and add the dreaded cardio in. I think all of us Big Guys hate cardio more than any other group. And it is not cause I could nto or can not do it. In college at 240lbs I ran a 8 min mile. I want that back! I think that if I run a mile (after easing into it of course) a day I can shed what I want, even easier than I did 10 years ago. So all the words of encouragement (stop me from the poprtart attack!) you can give me would be great! I want a new lean mean Mutt in 04!-------------- LIFT HEAVY! BECOME STRONG, LIKE BULL! |

Mutt, you have the right attitude and you will do it buddy. When you get "stuck", as we all do, if your diet is correct, you have to put blinders on basically and see past where you are. Your body fights you at certain points, and if you just stay with it and stay focused during these times, you will break through the sticking points. So many when they get stuck start thinking to themselves, I have tried and tried, and it is not working, so I might as well enjoy myself, and quit the diet just about the time they may be actually ready to break through to the next plateau! Keep this in mind, no matter how much your body fights, if you fight back with top notch diet and exercise, stay focused and reasonable, you will eventually win. So, stay with it, it will happen. Never, ever give up, this is losing. When things are the bleakest and it looks like you have done all that can be done, this is when you have to fight even harder. Best of luck to you.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

Hey Mutt,
Go for it. I lost the pounds over 10 months, slowly but surely, my waist has gone from 42 to 35, didn't know that that was possible. From your posts it appears that you know already what it takes both in the gym and in the kitchen so no excuses. It's over to you and your determination. I'm a believer in cardio so would encourage you to get into it. Start slow, but have weekly & monthly goals and you'll be amazed at how soon you'll be hitting that 8 min mile. I'm willing to wager that if you get going now you'll run it by 21st of Feb 2004!!!! AND THAT IS A CHALLENGE! Cheers. Warren |

Scott, discipline is the key. You couldn't make the gains in lifting you have if you didn't have a large amount of discipline already. For me it is pizza and sweets. My wife told me the other night she was amazed at how I had completely cut out the sweets. I still have pizza on game day but thats only 16 days a year.
We bust each other here but all in good fun. I will never joke about someones weight. My wife was a fat kid and I know how hurtful it can be. The thing I heard you say is "ALl my sisters and brothers (I have 3 of each) will be there as well as my Grandmother and aunt etc. ALl they have ever seen is me like I am now with a 50 inch waist. So I want to really surprise them!" Surprising them is cool but do it for yourself. That said, i will say that you already know how to eat properly. Splenda is a wonderful thing if you use it properly. You and your wife can find some pretty creative things to do with it. I use it with a dab of unsweetened cocoa in my protein shake. I will promise to razz you when I don't see CARDIO in your awesome workouts. I will also catch you on squats young pup. I'm down on my weight 7 lbs since your challange started and 3 points of bf per my brand new calipers. You don't wanna get spanked by a geezer do you? -------------- Living well is the best revenge. Good luck, Mutt. You will be able to do it. I have lost 48 lbs and am down to 38 inch waist so I know it can be done. I will suggest looking on allrecipes.com. The recipes are not all low fat and high protein but search and you can find several that are excellent and fit into what you are needing. I have taken several and changed to low fat ingredients. Now I have about 30 meals that I can choose from that are healthy. Good luck over the holidays. If you lose too much you will just be Mut with one t

Mutt, just stick to what you already know it the way to go in loosing the inches. Yes cardo is a big help, auuugh, but essential. YOur determination has always amazed me, so I know you can do it, and get the inches off and look great.

Yo Mutt! I have never been a fan of cardio, but I made an investment that changed cardio for me - for the better. I bought a mini CD player and created a couple disks of nothing but fast, up-beat, high-energy music. Some of it is bone-crushing rock and roll. Some of it is fast tacky techno dance music (from my younger "clubbin' days! LOL). Doesn't matter, what style, though. This is 1000% better than the AM/FM radio I had, because the reception is crystal clear. It's better than a CD player, too, because it holds more music than you could ever get on a standard CD. The sound quality is better than a tape player. It was not cheap ($80), but, Mutt, I'm doing cardio like never before. It's compact. It's my music. And I can easily edit out the breaks between songs so I get an almost continuous, high-energy workout - keeping up with the pace of the music. I use the elliptical trainer for at least 30 minutes every day (it's easy on the old knees). It is not unusual for me to now spend 60 minutes on it. And the time flies.
Mutt, I hold on to fat pretty easily (<Mutt does his best "shocked" face! LOL>). Through the use of my workout journals, I have discovered that the times when I gained the most muscle and lost the most fat, I was doing cardio EVERY DAY (in addition to weight training, of course). So, the only way for me ever to succeed at this is to keep at it - and the only way I'll keep at it is to make it less boring. The MiniDisk player does that for me. One of the best investments I've ever made from a cardio standpoint. As a part time musician (when I'm not doing rocket scientist things for NASA - thanks Charlie!), I can enter a completely different world when I hear music. If you enjoy music even a little, I urge you to give this a try. I can zone out with 60 minutes of pretty high intensity cardio work, keeping up with the beat of the music almost subconsciously, sweat like a pig, get the ole heart pumpin, and be done before I ever get tired of it! Check out e-bay for a used player if you must. Find a friend that works at an electronics store (to get you an employee discount). I'm telling you, the power of music can get you through your worst hatred toward cardio. Do it! Yo Jdelts! Did you use "potty mouth" in your last post? TSMD |

Thanks everyone! First I am doing this for myself and my family. I never lift for anyone or anything but myself. TSMD I have a cd player and that is ok since I only plan on doing 20-30 mins. I ate a lot, but did not overeat during the holidays. I tired to keep it clean as possible but my wifes homemade cookies, MMMnnnnnn Cookies, did me in LOL. I plan on starting a whole new routine this week. I have very limited funds for food for the next few months, so I think right now is a good time to go on a cut. Well talk later!-------------- LIFT HEAVY! BECOME STRONG, LIKE BULL! |

Atta baby, keep it up, here's my 2 cents..... do LOTS of cardio, keep lifting, drink lots of water, no cokes whatsoever, no white bread, no sweets, lots of protein, keep carbs decently low and mainly in the morning, and you'lle reach your goal easily probably before June.....Good luck-------------- If Satan ever tries to remind you of your past, just tell him of his future! |

thanks for all the advice. After really looking at this problem for the last few weeks, I have narrowed it to two things, one is little or no cardio, it is so easy on monday with 6 days left to put it off. Two is that I simply eat to many cals for the amount I get rid off. Here is the problem with Calories and cutting them out. My wife by the way laughes at this, when i cut even 500 cals out I get so hungry, dizzy and very very nastily cranky that it scares me LOL. When i get home I binge. This is even more so when I lift heavy and consistent. I eat mainly 3-4 small meals at work made up of oatmeal(8) 3-4 egg whites and skimm milk(10am) a meal made up of br rice and veges with tuna/chicken/steak(12 noon) then usualy either tuna and a baked spud or something similar (3pm). At home I try to eat about the same cals of what ever we eat for dinner. Usualy it is higher in protein (my doing) and a good soucre of carbs. I eat enough fats in my diet and I drink at least 1-2 gallons a day. So I am not sure how to get rid of body fat by lowering the cals when I am sooo starving that I ruin it by going home and eating the first thing I see.-------------- LIFT HEAVY! Mutt,
When you are doing the cardio also keep your heart rate at a steady 65-75% of your max heart rate for age. It is your own personal "fat-burning" zone. Maintain the heart rate for 30+-60 min and the pounds should melt off over time. If you will cardio and diet along with your workout routine I think you will be surprised at how much weight you lose along with how buff you will become! |
