Hey, I workout 5 out of 7 nights a week, and I always do a very tough workout that leaves me tired and a little sore. But I never do cardio, I do a mile or two run maybe once a month, but that's it. Will this have any negative effect on my workouts? Because I'm not trying to lose weight or anything like that, and usually when people mention cardio they associate it with weight loss. Just wonderin, thanks yall.

Tim

Light cardio is a great way to warm up.

The most important muscle in the body is the heart and yes, it'll be a good idea to do just a little bit of cardio. Like once a week go out for a run or something like that!

Well guys, I've been reading up on a lot of posts and forums and this whole talk about cardio is totally getting me confused. But as I remember, its always good to do some cardio, I would do it 3 times a week during my non-workout days at a moderate pace 60%-70% of my intensity for about 30mins and during my workout days do about 15mins after my workouts. I do this just to keep up with toning but my main goal is to gain some muscle. Anybody have any critisms or comments, they are definitely welcome.

On your lifting days, try to do your cardio before lifting. This will help ensure that your body is not drawing it's energy from your muscles, thus not impeding any gains.

For heart health, which is important, cardio for 20 minutes, three times a week was the common recommendation.
There is new research coming out that weightlifting has some carryover afects on the cardiovascualr system, so the 3 times a week recommendation may be on the way out for serious weightlifters. Until more research comes out, though, I would suggest 3 times a week, 20-30 minutes, varying types and intensity.

Is it really a smart thing to be doing cardio before your workout? Wouldn't you be exhausing yourself before using the energy to weightlift? And if not, when is it better to do cardio on workout days? Before or After? I would not want my body to take away energy from my muscles but I don't want to fatigue them before a workout. Any ideas?

I'm told to do the cardio before to get my body warmed up so I can lift better.

bb1fit posted a great topic like this one that would give you the answers to your question. Look for it in the Intermediate - Advanaced weight training forum. It should be highlighted and has a high reply number.

5-10 minutes before to get your muscles warm is good - but doesn't count as cardiovascualr work (your heart rate isn't up for a long enough period).
Doing cardio after you lift or on days that you don't lift is a better plan if you are trying to maintain/add muscle. It means you have more glycogen available for power during your lifting routine.
