Why is Oatmeal reccomended for breakfast over cereal? I was comparing the nutrition label between the oatmeal and Corn Flakes and I don't see much of a difference.

If I had to take a stab at it, it would do with how it affected your blood sugar levels, and the grains that make it up...im not to sure though.-------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

oatmeal is a non processed food. By this I mean that with cornflakes it has been milled to a paste etc. Oatmeal is unrefined therefore retains more nutritional vlaue. I know the lables maybe the same but oats are better....-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

dukeben18, are you eating the pre-sweetened oats? those *are* loaded with sugar. try the plain oats! they're much cheaper and don't have all that junk. just scoop out 1/2 cup for one serving. sweeten naturally with fruits or add some splenda. you can also try adding some nuts for healthy fats.

Oatmeal not only is unprocessed, but it's a low GI food that is loaded with fiber. I thing adding a few raisins really sweetens it up well.

You should be buying Old Fashioned Oats (not instant). The oatmeal you listed in the link is no better than cereal with a bunch of sugar dumped on it. The Old Fashioned are not only better for you, but like Kirby said, they are cheaper!-------------- ~Jennifer http://www.gwindalyn.com If you dont stand for something, you will fall for anything. |

As long as it takes water to boil...dump the oats in, let return to boil, and let cook to your consistency. I like mine kind of on the raw side, so I only let mine boil a minute or so. I have frozen strawberries in the bowl, and pour the hot oats over them. They thaw nicely, sprinkle some cinnamon, and pretty tasty.-------------- Great people never want it easier, they just want to be better! Ron |

I like mine like glue so I cook them about 6 minutes. I cook them in water w/ a little salt but as they start to dry out I add milk to keep them from scorching. Then some splenda and maybe some cinnamon. Instant oatmeal is a pretty silly idea when you think about how easy oatmeal is to make. And you'll save a ton of money too by buying the old fashioned kind.

I do mine in the microwave. I throw 1/2 cup oats with 1 cup water in a deep microwave bowl and heat 2 minutes. Then I put cinnamon and splenda in it and eat. So, it takes no longer than the instant kind.
I've also used protein powder, nutmeg, flavor extracts, natural peanut butter, honey, raisins, flax seeds, walnuts, allspice, cloves. -------------- ~Jennifer http://www.gwindalyn.com If you dont stand for something, you will fall for anything. |

hi hi - yeah, mutt - work was crazy for a while but now it's more manageable. should be able to get on here more often now :)
you want a really fast way to make old fashioned oats? put your oats in a bowl, add really hot water, cover. come back to them in about 5 minutes and they're ready to go, no intervention needed. i do this every day with the water from the water cooler/heater at work. while my computer's booting up, my oats are "cooking" and i can read my email while i have breakfast! -kirby |
