Hello, I recently (two days ago, actually) started drinking Whey Protein shakes after my workouts in the evening. I've noticed a significant increase in deep sleep. I wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead. This strikes me as odd, because I've always slept terribly. Does anybody know of there is a link between protein and deep sleep or is it completely psychological?

Im going to have to say psychological at least from my stand point. Might be the whey you are taking? I dont know how it would though by being just like a regular source of food/refreshments. My only assumption would be if you are taking it at night then since it has milk in it. Makes you sleep like a baby. I know when I was young little man my mom would give me milk and I would sleep the night away. Just messing with you but I say psychological.

Whey should not affect your sleep either "whey". The one possiblility is whey taken by itself can cause a bit of a blood sugar rise, thus small insulin response. If you have a bit of a history of insulin abuse anyway, your pancreas may secrete more than needed, thus the inevitable blood sugar crash.

I've had a couple of protein shakes this week too and have noticed a deeper sleep at night also. Could also be for a couple of other reasons too. I've have so peanut butter before going to bed so I don't wake up in the middle of the night thinking I'm hungry. Seems to work for me! Maybe it is all psychological!

I too have noticed the restful nights since the protein, but I also have been taking creatine and working out harder so I am not sure which it is but I am glad cause I never used to sleep very sound.
