I am looking to bulk up over the next year or so and was looking into the benefits of Protein supplements / shakes / drinks / powders.
I know NOTHING about these and am interested in going down that road.
My questions:
What is the best for the $$?
Is it necessary?
When should I take it and how much?
I’ve also heard about creatine – sp?.
Again:
Is it necessary / worth it?

Any help here would be MUCH appreciated!

Second...while you're waiting on a response to this post you could check out the FAQ forum...lots of info on this...and carivan wrote a post titled "creatine explained" it's in one of the forums...but you could type it into fitbuddy at the bottom of this page and find it that way also.

You may have just hit the wrong year when you signed up...then again somebody else had this problem...he's 18 and his profile said he was 20,and he had the right year....they must have put Tim and Charlie in charge of computing the math for the newbies.....

I think it is too early in the game for creatine. By just working out regularly and eating right, you will have plenty of results to see. Give it a little time first on that.
As far as protein powders go, you don't need them if you are getting enough protein in what you eat. I use them because it is hard sometimes to eat enough protein so it supplements what I do eat. The best time to drink one is right after working out, then eat a real meal 45 min to an hour later.
Protein powder definitely isn't "necessary", it just makes hitting your diet goals a little easier. And as far as how much, that will depend on your diet goals, whether you want to take 10g worth of protein or even 40g of protein a day.

If you are a beginner, protien may have some value, but only post workout...but creatine at this point would actually be pointless. YOu are going to make gains faster than the normal advanced trainee anyway, if you use creatine now, what will you use when you stop making those gains? How will you know it even worked? I would save creatine for after your initial gains have stopped, and you have somewhat maxed out with strength and diet.

I just double checked my profile and I have sellected the correct age group, I dont quite know why it is saying that I'm 15. Maybe it's determined by my maturity level. I still ride dirtbikes and like to punch my frineds in the arm and tease my wife till she is ready to beat the crap out of me. That porbably expalins it...
As for the advice. I REALLY appreciate it.
Based on your advice I'll go ahead and start the protein shakes directly after my workouts.
Next questions:
What do I take, I see protein & whey protein. Some cost $20.00 and others cost $100.00
What is the best bang for my buck here?
Also, how much? Some places I have read that I should be consuming 1g for every pond of lean body mass. So I weigh 220lb and I've got a bit of a spare tire going on so I should assume that I'll need about 170g of protein. Is that right?
