Not a lot of activity in my favorite board, so heres something to discuss.
Sumo pulling vs conventional. I pull best conventional (I use my powerful quads to break the weight off the ground with a close stance, and then finish the lift with my back). However, heres a few things. Sumo will often be best for shorter individuals, and individuals with powerful squats. It utilizes a shorter range of motion, and really brings the hips into the movement. I am pulling sumo as a max effort exercise for the next 4-5 weeks. I want to use it because I really need to bring in my posterior chain more when pulling, and my hips are a major weakness as far as everything is concerned. I also plan on opening with a sumo pull in my next competition, to save my lower back for the heavy pulling on my next attempt (or attempts, if I decide for a third). While this may seem counter-intuitive for someone with weak hips, my back fatigues faster than my hips. -------------- Iron and chalk. |

Thats what I am thinking menace. It would defianetly help me to use my hamstrings more when I pull conventional.
I plan on doing european deadlifts (throwing the shoulders back as much as possible to pull back more and put more stress on the glutes and hamstrings) for the next 4-5 weeks, switching back to wide stance squatting, and then doing conventional rack pulls a few weeks out from the contest. -------------- Iron and chalk. |

I do conventional. I have long legs and sumo style is just plain awkward. Today is deadlift day for me - I'll try sumo again just to get a feel for it.-------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." Tried sumo again yesterday. Yep, it's still awkward. I feel it more in my rear groin (if there is such a thing), butt, and hips, but less in the lower back. -------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" that's the point of sumo to get the load of the lower back and more on to the hips/glutes....hardest part for sumo pullers is the lockout....

============
Quoting from elantraa: wrestler whats your strength diff when doing conventional vs. sumo? and whats ur pull routine look like as u are preparing for ur contest u mentioned and what martial arts have u studied, u say u fight mma in ur profile ============= Well I pull 400+ conventional, switched to sumo and I was doing easy sets of 3 @ 315, but didn't feel like going heavy. I'll take a few weeks to get used to the movement before I break any records. As for my routine, it focuses on hip strength, as that is my primary weakness. Right now I am doing sumo deadlifts, and then switching back to wide stance squats, and in the weeks leading up to the competition I will be doing conventional rack pulls. I only deadlift every other cycle, and really want to focus on hip strength, but would like to have some heavy weight in my hands before the meet. I plan on pulling 455 from the ground, so I would like to have at least that in my hands before the competition. I was a wrestler through high school, and also did brazilian jui-jitsue and muay thai. Basically, once I got within a foot of anyone, they were done. No longer fighting (no one understands how much work it is), but just focusing on weightlifting. I lift in the 148's. -------------- Iron and chalk. |

Not a lot of guys use sumo lockouts.
Wide stance pull throughs may be a better idea. -------------- Iron and chalk. |
