That is a pretty bold statement.

Are you saying that anytime a person gains weight that they will be slower? Because that is pretty wrong.

What kind of weight are we talking 10lb, 20lbs? Muscle? Fat?
If you continue to run during this process then you will unavoidable add some muscle to your legs and you will get better at running. As a result, I bet that you end up faster.

At some point I believe that body weight can be detrimental to running speed, but I highly doubt that you are in that situation.

How much mass? Ideally just like a car you want as much horse power under the hood on the lightest car possible.

A more important question....why would you want to add JUST upper body mass?

Because I'm trying to avoid adding more lower body mass as my legs are big enough. I'm not talking about huge upper body gains, just enough so that I don't look totally imbalanced.

Yeah the upper body mass of Michael Johnson really slowed him as does the linebackers that run fast 40 yards....come on blanket statements need back up

I highly doubt that tinnuk..but if you want to keep your speed up..then you need to keep you body as compact as possible. There's reason why NASCARs don't have heavy bumbers, grills etc.

Think physics??? How about momentum??? Weight actually helps up to a point as far as speed.

You guys are neglecting 3 basic principles of training...

1. Upper body STRENGTH will have a noticable positive effect on max speed, and unless the weight gain is SIGNIFICANT, it will not have an effect on maximum speed.

2. Tinnuk needs to meet his monthly quota for how many posts he can use to justify not gaining weight.

3. Generally speaking, the more letters a person feels the need to put after their name in as many instances as possible, the less real world experiance they have.

Lol,
Nah, I'm actually working towards gaining upperbody mass. The thought occured that that may be a problem for speed considering the obvious fact that the legs are responsible for running. I've now learned that it won't be a problem, so in fact, this post HAS justified gaining weight.

Much better. Great on a resume, but crap if you're trying to get a point across.
