Since when has exercise become like sitting in an easy chair? I mean lets get real folks, if to get in shape was like reclineing in your fav chair more would be in shape. Mutt, what the hell...? You ask. Ok let me expalin. I was at the Y last night, over 2/3 of the area is taken up with cardio machines and weight machines. One piece of equipment that got me mad was the newest recumbent bike. Now I am all for comfort and likeing what you are doing, but the sight of a woman using this bike kind of insulted me. You all know a recumbent bike is like sitting in a chair ok, well this one has a nice paeed seat with padded arm rests. So here we have her riding this LOUNGING. You she is sitting in it watching TV! Do not get me wrong, I hate cardio and LOVE distraction while doing it. But I think this is going to far. I mean for real she looked and pedaled like she was at home in the Lazyboy. Folks working out should be fun and enjoyable but lets face it, it does entail some discomfort. I hate this bike each time I see it it makes me sick. IT is up there with the Ab-Lounger....at least they call it like it is. What is the point to all of this......I do not know other than she might like riding that bike but I wonder if her results are measurable at all?-------------- If you can itch your nose after arm day...do another set! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Mutt, the bike is for cardio. If you pedal hard, it does the job. Mine also has a tension adjustment. Come try it. I also watch TV while doing this boring task. I do not drink beer and smoke a cigar while on the bike. After 25 minutes of HIIT on it, I'm tired.-------------- Dyslexics of the world...UNTIE!!!!!! Charlie | |

The recumbant bike is less stressful on ones knees...I alternate between it, the treadmill and the eliptical.

I know this I am not against them i guess I came across the wrong way. I am not saying that they should not be used, rather trying to get across that taking the level of comfort she was may not be conductive to getting fit. She was just about laying down. That was all.-------------- If you can itch your nose after arm day...do another set! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

The recumbent bike is for people with bad knees or other problems. When I had my ankle injury, my PT told me to use it for a few weeks. I was not allowed to weight bear on the ankle. The recumbent bike saved me from gaining back lbs from inactivity. I had to start off easy and as I was healing could add tension for a nice work out. Everything has its place. I can see the problem you had with the lady. It might have seemed she was just coasting on the bike but maybe she had an injury like me and was not allowed to put pressure on her legs, foot etc.

Kudos to her for being in the gym rather than sitting at home doing nothing.-------------- I was 17 years old the first time my father told me he loved me. |

that is an interesting theory about electric stimulation cuasing muscle contractions to tone abs. But I would have to say why the heck did you waste the money. I would say that stuff dont work.-------------- I am that which must be feared, worshipped and adored. The world is mine now and forever. No one holds command over me. No man. No god. Do Electric Ab Stimulators Really Work?
by Nick Nilsson, Author of "The Best Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of" Electronic muscle stimulators are the latest craze, the hottest fad... but you want to know "do they really work!" Right? To answer that question, let's start with a little background information on what this equipment was originally designed for. Electric ab stimulators were (and still are) used in medical rehab situations. They are designed to keep muscles from atrophying (wasting away) in situations where a limb must be immobilized. For example, if you broke your leg, the doctor could place an electrode on the muscle and use electricity to make it contract. This would provide a minimum level of stimulation, thus keeping the muscle active. As far as building muscle, such as the ads on TV claim, this is not backed up by research. The level of electrical stimulation necessary to build up the abdominal muscles to what you see on TV would be extremely high, and thus very painful. Many companies that sell these belts also claim that the belts help burn fat. In reality, the small muscle contractions produced by these belts burn about as many calories as the effort required to take the belt out of the box and put the batteries in. If you read the fine print in these ads, you will also notice that the instructions for use also include a suggested exercise and nutrition plan. This, without a doubt, would be the true source of the results people get from this equipment. But what about people you may know who have tried the belts and say that they feel something when they use it? Let's put it this way... the belt does provide a small level of stimulation to the abdominal muscles. When a person's abs are totally lacking any form of stimulation, any amount of stimulation has the potential to produce results. It is simply a matter of something is better than nothing (in this case, not a whole lot better, though). A much better solution for working your abdominal muscles effectively is to do the unglamorous crunch exercise. It may not send electric shocks into your guts but it will get the job done. Crunches, even done properly and regularly, won't burn fat but they will definitely tighten up your abs. Click here for detailed instructions on how to do the crunch most efficiently, )or visit our abdominal exercise equipment reviews to find out which product is right for you). Do electric ab stimulators work? In a nutshell, no. These companies are simply preying upon society's desire for results without effort. Don't be fooled by the hype. But it's so much easier to drink beer and watch tv whilst wearing my electronic ab stimulator, than whilst doing crunches.

And it is so much more comfortable to eat krispy kremes on the ab lounger than on the floormat... :)
The recumbent bike is a good machine. Yes, some people coast and will fail to see results. But, you are assuming you know her situation. As already pointed out, she may be in recovery (overuse of the ab stimulator), or she may be a newbie. You can work up a good sweat on any machine if you apply yourself. I do agree that people who sit on the bike and read a romance novel are wasting their time, but as hec pointed out, better they are moving their legs while doing it than just sitting on the couch. As long as they aren't coasting on the machine i want to use, they are okay.... -------------- GYPO (JK) |

Think of how many calories you burn in spinning class. Could not the same be applied to the recumbent bike...

Wow, I didn't know that about the recumbent bike. I should talk my dad into getting one. He has bad knees. He can't go out walking in the snow up there in Michigan; and I'm sure he would love the idea of watching tv while cycling.

I think the extra padding one the chair, is just to intise peopel to workout, and cardio...and try to make them as comfy as possible. For most people its a mental thing i guess. The us wouldnt' eb so out of shape if everybody got on one 1 time a day for like 20mins. -------------- \" The only true eye, is your minds eye\"- plato |
