I was wondering if running or walking is better for fat loss?
I have a friend who started running about a month ago and I swear it looks as though the woman had liposuction done.
Can you really lose that fast. I understand that things take time and I'm o.k. with that.
But what gives? I have heard so many different stories on this subject and always thought that walking was better but owning a treadmill and walking on it daily (well months ago), I never lost inches.

Exercise alone won't do a whole lot....your diet is key....I can workout for hours a day...but if I'm not watching what I eat...I lose little...also working with weights in addition, and a priority over cardio...will make a huge difference in your body shape as well...check out the ladies please print and read posted by asimmer in the womens forum...good stuff!

For the cardio, walking at a fast pace is better than running. Running is really hard on the joints and causes damage. You can burn calories and get your HR up at a fast walking pace. But remember, you can't lose weight just by running. Follow KC's advice, as it all comes down to calories used and consumed.

To add to what Carivan said, if you walk fast paced and in a incline on a treadmill you'll burn about the same amount of calories as to running flat grounded.
Also if you really want to burn DON'T HOLD ON TO THE DAMN BARS AND HANDLES. If you feel the need to hold on then this means your going to fast so slow down!
If you ever see a person holding on for dear life and in a incline take a look at the posture and lower back it's just screamming out for injury!
Best to go at a pace where you can move your arms and legs and still go on, that holding on for dear life stuff is for the birds!

I beg to differ, Running burns more calories especially if outside where there is air resistance and hills, so for cardio, I give running the nod even on a treadmill. Especially if it's capable of giving you hills or running on an incline. It is true running can be hard on the joints but if you build up the mileage/time slowly to allow the body to get used to the pounding the body responds and the injuries shouldn't happen, just like weight training, if the weight is increased to quickly, injuries happen.

HIIT variations, running are all better alternatives to walking.
Go as fast as you can handle(without dragging a$$ or holding on to bars of a treadmill). Bottom line is if you can run for an hour you'll burn more calories than jsut walking. Ditto HIIT or sets of sprints. The added stress on the joints doesnt outweight the benefits of extra intensity. With proper shoes, running posture, variating running surfaces, and tracking total weekly volume your body will get stronger. The extra stress on the joints may not be a bad thing no more so than high intensity lifting is bad for muscles/bones/etc. The key is to do it right.

as already stated HIIT and diet are the keys. Get your heart rate up, and it's all about portion control. good luck.

Raising and lowering your heart rate is probably optimal.
