Hi Y'all...
I have been at the gym 5-6 days a week for a whole month. Doing 40 mins of moderate Cardio, and weights for 20mins. I've tried to stick to 1200-1300 calories per day, but a little more leanant on the weekend. I haven't lost a pound. Like many others, I sometimes struggle with emotional eating, but I am trying to conquer that. You would think with all the sweat and weights I've been doing, maybe I would of lost something. But..No. I just weighed myself today and I am 2 lbs heavier. I feel defeated. I keep a food diary, and try to track my calories. I am so upset, I just want to give up. I am trying to lose 20lbs, I weigh 145 5'4". My body is NOT wanting to budge. Any tips? I was thinking going Protein-Only, but it is very hard for me to stick too, since I get headaches, but if it will take the weight off faster with my workouts...I will do it. Any suggestions? ANY help is much appreciated. You guys are awesome :dumbbell::) |

What's your Basal Metabolic Rate..? if you go too low on calories your body will start to save everything you eat... thus, not losing any weight.-------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* Fat loss isn?t under the control of the magic fat loss fairies. - Alwyn Cosgrove |

I am not sure. How do I find that out? I think my metabolism is low. Even though my Thyroid is fine.

You said that you've been doing this for a month now. Well, good for you! Now would be the time where most people start slacking on new year's resolutions because of many factors, one of which would be getting discouraged. I sincerely believe that perhaps your body is still adjusting to this routine. I don't know if you've lead a sedentary life until before this, but shocking your body into shape isn't going to make it suddenly decide to shed some unwanted pounds. Try incorporating your new lifestyle to the rest of your day. If for work, you're only 2 or 3 flights up, take the stairs. For shopping, park a little further. Setting yourself up with what I read as much determination in the beginning, and now getting upset because there is no immediate change won't help you lose anything. I know I sound preachy, and I apologize, but hang in there! The fact that you started doing something healthy for yourself is an accomplishment in itself. I'm cheering for you!

Now that's a starting point, buffy. You need to have more than that a day to account for activity... you'll need to adjust to lose weight, but not go lower than the 1470 per day.
I'm not quite confident in suggesting this, but add a couple hundred calories to the 1470 to help with some weight loss. So you should be around 1700. If I'm off base on this, someone correct me. t -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* Fat loss isn?t under the control of the magic fat loss fairies. - Alwyn Cosgrove |

So, if I eat 1470 per day, and I usually burn about 350c during Cardio, I could lose weight? That would put me at about 1,120c per day.
Other than my Cardio, I am pretty sedentary with work and school. Last year, I lost 20lbs in 2 1/2 months, doing what I'm doing now, but this time I was really trying to "Clean" up my diet. Apparently, Egg Salad Sandwiches, DO NOT HELP. ;) Thanks |

Your BMR is what your body needs just to be alive.... lay there, sleep, breath... anything less than that and you will lose weight, but after a short period of time your body hits 'starvation mode' and starts to save everything and store it as fat.
You need the 1470 PLUS a couple hundred more to lose weight. Yes, eat more to lose weight. It's true. Check the diet forum and get a list of foods one should have on hand. -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* Fat loss isn?t under the control of the magic fat loss fairies. - Alwyn Cosgrove |

For losing weight, I usually recommend eating right at your BMR level. Try reversing your cardio and strength training. Strength train for a half hour, then do some moderate cardio afterwards. Also you may want to evaluate just what you're eating. Counting the calories is a great idea, but also the types of calories make a difference. If you are sedentary at work, and are taking in a lot of simple carbs, this may be working against you. Are you eating several small meals throughout the day? Or just the usual big three? having a couple of small snacks in between meals keeps your metabolism up. Also you may just be slow at getting started(I had a client like that). The weight gain may be newly formed lean muscle mass, if anything I'd assess your progress by inches or clothes size, and not by pounds. Maybe supplementing with some green tea might help to kick start you a little. Bear in mind the word "supplement".

I just thought of something else here. I read your profile and you work out 6 days a week? That seems like a lot to me for a beginner. You may try alternating days of just cardio or just strength training.

============
Quoting from returnofplex: For losing weight, I usually recommend eating right at your BMR level. ============= Not sure I agree with this.. if she is eating the 1470kcals per day and burning 400kcals through exercise, that wouldn't be enough. As I understand it you NEED the 1470 per day. Here's an example of what your daily caloric needs would be with some activity: http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalcalc.htm This includes activity and is higher than the BMR would be. For me it has a daily caloric intake of 2346kcals and my BMR is 1800 or so. In order for me to lose weight I need to eat a couple hundred calories less than the 2346. At least that's my understanding. -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* Fat loss isn?t under the control of the magic fat loss fairies. - Alwyn Cosgrove |

Keep this in mind, weight loss is not ever linear. That is, your body may not respond on the scale at a certain rate as you would like to see, more often it is in spurts, and you will see maybe 3-4 lbs. at one time. The body is being 'primed' for weight loss by your exertion of extra calories, and if your diet is comparable, you will see results. Many folks do exactly what the title of your thread is, throw in the towel, and this is many times right at the time the body is 'forced' to respond positively. If you are doing things correctly, the body will have no choice but to respond in a positive manor. Stay focused.-------------- Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer |

Ultimately, it's gonna boil down to whatever works for you in the long run. I've had great results(70 lbs lost and kept off over the last 12 months) by eating right at my BMR level, but I also have a pretty well balanced diet. If I could say one last thing, it's DON'T GIVE UP! you've come this far, don't let it be a waste!

Combine the following with what BB1 said, and you'll conquer this!

Dont give up!!
I experienced the same thing you did at first, I was not eating enough. Since I upped my calories to around 2,000 a day, I have lost several pounds 3 or 4. Try and keep sugars and salt to a minimum and drink plenty of water as well. Scale weight isn't everything I learned. Look at your muscles and how your clothes fit. Take a digital picture now of your body, in bathing suit, then take a picture in about 30 days, I am sure you will see a difference in your shape if you are lifting weights!! |

Thank you all for your help and words of encouragement. I am still going to the gym. :) I am not new to working out; I lost 20lbs last year, but I am stuck in a rut, and the whole calorie thing is throwing me off. I generally eat 3 meals a day with 2 snacks. I think I really need to be serious about it on the weekends. (ahem, no alcohol and dining out) :) And really pay attention to my hunger signs.
Thank you guys again. :dumbbell: |
