Mutt - I have been working with a personal trainer 3x's a week for 6 weeks (1 hour sessions) at PowerHouse Gym ( it's a nationwide gym known for the "Apex" program) I paid $720.00 I am in the middle of know where in Missouri so that might be a low price. I would like to hope so anyway, I wouldn't want to find out after the fact that he robbed me blind.

Going rate for independant trainer in Illinois $45 an hour, or sign up for min. of 18 1 hour sessions for $40 an hour. About the same as paulinelagasey is paying..The Golds Gym offers trainers in a class format (4 individuals). 1 hour cost the member $15...Hmmm 15 x 4 = $60--what a deal...

asimmer would be a good one to ask. I believe her business website is viptraining.com...Check her profile, it tells what it is in there...

Hi Mutt the average charge varies upon geographical location & the qualification of the trainer. On average rates start around $40 per hour for a class 3 trainer, $70 per hour for a class 2 trainer, & $100 per hour for a class 1 or master fitness trainer. These rates are based on an area where the average hourly wage is $10-15 per hour & this is what the average working person can expect to pay give or take $5-10.

It's a good idea for anyone with your knowlegde and motivation...at the very least to supplement ones income. My personal trainer seems to make enough money he drives a brand spanking new BMW, wears designer clothes and lives in the good part of town. He has been doing it for 4 yrs. He is also known to meet clients as early as 5am, is punctual and always keeps his appointments.

LOL Which is one resource for a trainer...but I have been thinking..I love lifting and the gym. I know that helping people is one thing I want to do, so why not combine the two! I just have to make sure I can meet my duties in terms of making a living. Quitting my job here means I have to find medical and dental ins somehow. So there are a lot of things that have to fall in place, not the least is losing 15% bodyfat!

I could go deep into the personal training thing. Gettin clients is your key, it doesn't matter what you charge, if you don't have clients......get someone like Oprah, and you are set. I charge $45.00 per hour, and that may sound like alot, but you have to remember that whatever gym you take your clients to will take a bite. Some as much as 50%. It is imparative to build a good relationship with a gym. Also your certification is important. You do not want to do one of those "matchbook" certifications, many gyms if they don't like your affiliation, they don't let you train clients there.

Always try to get your money up front. You will inevitabley get this scenario at some time, you have a client that wants to train at 5 am, before work. Ok, fine, you get up at 4, shower, get ready, just getting ready to walk out the door and ring ring, they are calling, uh, went to a party last night, too messed up, or you know.

So, be careful, you will learn as you go.

I know Ron. I have seen it too at the gym, which is why I would tend to a certain amount up front and a contract signed. I have been in the business world a while LOL. I just need to get out of this job and into something that is going to make me feel good about who I am!

24 Hour Fitness gives you a course also. I know they have benefits too. I live in Houston, Texas and pay a special rate of $50/hr since I book so many sessions!!! But if I only booked say 8 sessions, it would be $56/hr. Don't know what the pay is like but one of the "young" trainers just bought a really fancy new car.

Another thing that has to be dealt with is the field is getting "flooded". Meaning that is was preached and advertised a while back as such a great career. When this happens, too many folks get into it and bring down the value as you well know. Heck, any kid with a bump on his arm is a personal trainer these days. I wonder what ever happened to experience?

And Mutt, I have been in the business field for quite some time. I owned my own store, gas station, tire shop, and owned a cleaning business. This does not make you automatically "good" at this. Be careful, you may not be able to make the living you want with this. I would view this as a "side job" at best, if it becomes more, fine.

I charged $50 an hour as an independent, couldn't get much of a client base because of lack of sponsors and resources...I then worked for a gym where they charged $50 and i got $25 of it. In New York, $50 is pretty much a minimum if you want to make a living off of it.
