I notice sometimes when I do my workouts if I really add on the lbs to some exercises it feels like I'm not really hitting the muscle so much, I don't feel much of a burn when I do the exercises... could this mean I'm going too heavy? I can complete the 8 reps sometimes but usually I am going VERY slow to do it.

You dont need to feel a burn or DOMS to experiance hypertrophy. Oftentimes, conditioning the CNS with heavier weights is one of the best ways to long term hypertrophy. Most clients I have had that had training experiance had been habitually training in too high of a rep range. I put them on lower weights with higher intensity, and they responded positively. Just try it for a while and monitor your progress.
What do you mean by going slow? Are your reps slow, is this delibrate?

Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. And its called a deadlift. Any other questions???

If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous.

Not deliberate, I just lack the explosiveness I guess is the term for it.

As wrestler says, the pump is not the do all end all of training. It is imparitive for hypertrophy to continue to continually challenge the muscle with heavier loads.

If you can do a set with what you call heavier weights, and complete that set, then you are not doing too much.

Think of it this way as far as the pump, if you take a 15 lb. dumbbell and do enough isolation curls, will you get a pump? You bet. Will you grow from it? Most probably not. Challenge the muscle.

Excellent example... Does it make sense now zenkei?
If you lack the explosiveness, than you should defianetly be working with heavier weight. While using heavier weight, I would use a controlled (and if hypertrophy is your goal, maybe even slow) eccentric, and on the concentric phase, move the weight as fast as possible. This will recruit more muscle fibers. Now I am not saying the weight will be moving fast. I am saying that your INTENT should be to move fast. Naturally, 300lbs will move significantly slower than 250lbs, but the heavier weights will be good for you.
