I was just wondering does the butt consist mostly of fat and is that why when people lose body fat, their butts seem to get smaller? Also, can your butt consist of muscle only?

I think like the rest of your body it has both, but your bodyfat percentage would tell you which you have more of. I've seen some really muscle-y buns and some really fatty ones.

I think ones rearend could consist of mostly muscle if ones body fat % is low enough. Fat does seem to gather differently on women. Some tend to store it in their glute/thigh region, other in their chest whileas others in their ab region. On men, fat tends to group more around the stomach area than the random placement of womens bodyfat. Genetics will dictate where. We can work out specific areas to build muscle in specific areas but fat will chose to come off where it wants to (we cannot "spot" reduce a definite area), but overall bodyfat reduction will reduce problem areas over time.

LOL we women tend to keep a lot more fat on our butt than men but fortunately that doesn't mean that we cannot change that into good muscles!
The glutes need A LOT of resistance training so don't be afraid of doing your weekly squat session! (o;

I am a member of Curves and workout 3 days a week, but, I've been a little confused with their program. They have machines that work on hydraulics with no adjustments. My question is: in order to loose inches, would it be better to do short, fast repetitions or long, slow movements?

slower heavier movement with weights, the high repitition stuff you do there is really cardio, which is good, but you also want to firm up and activate your muscles with real weights.

Yes go heavy and slow to build up the muscles and then (next summer maybe?) if you want to cut then go for more sets and more reps.

I was asking because I'm losing weight and I have a combination of muscle and fat on my body, but the accumlation of fat is in my stomach area. Since spot reducing isn't an option, I have to lose overall weight and I don't want to lose my butt shape if it is composed of alot of fat, which I seriously doubt, due to a lower percentage of body fat. I always hear the same thing, do squats, lunges, ..., but is there anything else I can do?
