Hi everyone, I just had this doubt concerning your monthly fees for your local gyms.

A friend of mine just got into Bally Fitness, and they charge him around 120 usd per month... he says it's worth it because all the machines are new and he gets to watch a lot of pretty girls...

I go to a local gym near my house and I pay 30 usd per month, the equipment is "ok" as in it has everything you need but its kind of old, and not that many pretty girls around.... I tell him that the main reason for working out its not flirting, its working out!

So, how much do you spend on monthly fees? I guess Mexico would be cheaper than the US on that right?

120 a month for a gym is insane...for that he'd better getting a personal trainer, a private locker room, and enough pretty girls to give him a lifetime supply of eye candy.

i pay $55 a month to use any 24hour fitness in north america and all of them have great equipment in their facilities. i also get to see women doing bicycle crunches in front of mirrors in really short skirts...i bet that's not included in your friend's monthly fees.

20 GB pounds for a set of dumbells, and 60 pounds for a workbench = total 80 pound one off payment. I only get to see me in the mirror, but the reflection is slowly getting better.
If I really want to push the boat out I go to my local gym which is 3 pounds a time.
Used to pay 50 pounds a month for a gym with shiny equipment, but poor instruction, even from the gym manager (like do HIIT session, then 30 minute standard cardio session THEN do squats, lunges and leg presses, EVERY day six days a week)
I reckon I'm better off at home with a workout from FT and advice from the guys on the board :)

True. That's some pretty random advice to get from someone. Ummm...pounds are less or more than a dollar. I dunno, I only know italian and swiss exchange rates () j/k. Howdie, that sounds like a bargain at any price. I only pay $40, but it's a local franchise of gyms. There is like 20 locations in and around here, but nothing nationally. But they have pools, climbing walls, new equip, and since there is not a national presence here, they have all the eye candy going there. I did mention that I go there too, right.

I am paying 42.00cdn$$ and find that high.
And If I want to see pretty girls, I look at my wife, or just go into the city and sit at a terrace with a Heinikin.
That's eye candy for me.
120.00 wow!

Wow...50 pounds is close to $100! With the exchange rate lately, anyway. Mine is right at $40/month, and I think that's a little much. Considering I have only gotten instruction from a couple of friends who go with me, and the instructors seem to spend more time chatting up members of the opposite sex than anything else.

Did I mention he had to pay an initial membership fee of 500 usd? :surprised::(

Yes carivan, it is a total rip off, I guess that with those 120 usd per month he could workout at the gym I go, and then get the remaining 90 usd spent on supplements

i only pay $18(cdn)a month and its easily the biggest gym in the area. The have some deal where after 1.5 years, your fee's drop in half.

LOL! no wildbear617, the fees do not include a post workout meal (not even a shake, those are sold separately) or the limo ride...

My husband and I joined Bally's on a two for one.. We paid $800 USD upfront and have $25 monthly dues. We can use all related gyms in the country (have used several), and some are really great, some are stinky.

I wanted spinning and yoga, thought I wanted a pool from past experience at a private health club but now know not to go in that thing.

What's done is done, we're members now, though there's alot of crap to deal with there - not worth the scenery. All the gyms in my area are rather pricey and this was actually the cheapest in my 2 month search. If I went farther from home there were reasonable Powerhouse type places with no contract that I would have preferred.

btw Burroch, I am guessing that the $120 a month includes financing of the membership purchase?? Unless he got taken for a ride by a salesman, usually the membership is around a grand, so he probably put $500 down and financed the remainder.

$120 a month should drop to whatever dues rate he got once the membership price is paid off.

I pay 45/mnth CDN after Tax. This is at Florida Fitness in Ottawa. It has Squash Courts and all new equipment, plus it allows me to visit any one of the 4 Facilities throughout Ottawa.

I use to go to Nautilus Plus (in Quebec) and if you signed a 1yr contract it was 25/mnth, and it was all new Equipment as well. But I have moved to Ontario, so the travel time isn't worth it.

I pay 75.00 a month for myself and my wife at Golds. I can use it at any Golds. I have no complaints.

What's with the huge down payments. That is insane. 800 down?? I put about 60 down for reg. fees and I had to pay first and last month dues, but $800 is expensive. We don't have a bally's around here though.

lol when I was in college the gym was also free and it was awesome, new equipment, all you needed for a great workout, cardio machines, etc.

Its a pity those times are over now :(

I don't recall exactly what mine is monthly. I paid about 425 USD to have it covered for a year.

I like detox174's plan, but after 3 degrees, that gets old. One year I saved a lot of money by auditing a class. Sometimes registering for a 1 credit class will give you access to all the goodies students get, for less than what you would pay for a membership at a gym.
