How many hours of sleep do I need

I'm male, 30 years, 170lbs, so how many hours of sleep do I need? I don't want to spend a lot of time on the bed, so I usually sleep 6 hours or less, but sometimes I'm feeling tired and sleep, is 6 hours good enough?

If you are training hard you need at least 8 depending on what your body tells you.

Well, if you're tired with only 6 hours, try 7 hours, and if you are tired with only 7 hours, then try 8, and so on.

I like to get 8 hours, but I at least strive for six.

On an average , sleep perdio must extent from 6 - 10 hrs which depends on your life style.

If you don't indulge in any physical activities 6 hrs will do. If you do workout atleast 8 hrs is recomended. Anything above 8 is for children. Above 10 hrs of sleep is not normal.

If I dont get at least 7 hours of sleep my next day training is a killer and I am tired through the day. I target 8 hours.

I would say 8 too.. usually when I got 8-10 I would be sore from an intense workout the very next day.. but lately i've been getting in about 5-6 and I don't seem to recover as well.. if I get in a good workout I might not start feeling sore until the end of the next day if not the day after (is that DOMS?) but hey try different amounts and see what works for you.. so far it seems every favors 6-8...

I break my sleeping up into 15-20 minute naps every 3 hours on a 24 hour scale. This equals about 6 hours a day......Do you think this pattern could equal a standard night sleep of 6 hours? LOL actually I find if I sleep more then 8 hours a night I over sleep and am just as tired the following day as if I only slept for 4 hours.......but I think we all agree, everybody is different!

How do you manage to do that? There is no way I can catch a nap every three hours. I don't really think it is as effective as getting 8 straight hours of sleep though. It takes time for your body to actually hit a deep sleep. With only 20 minutes of sleep, your body is just starting to get into the resting phase.

Lisa, I kinda think that qualters was just joking about the whole 15 min naps thing, at least I hope so.

Hhmmm wouldn't be that bad thou..... getting a small nap every three hours..... But who is going to do my work then?

the whole point of sleep is for your body to regain itself after the day. your immune system is the most effective during sleep. your skin needs for example 6 hours of sleep to `mend`itself (wounds etc.) and then between 6 and 7 hours
your brain regains itself. `-thats how it works.
ideal is 7.5 hours of sleep. over 8 hours is actually unhealthy! studies have proven that on average a person who sleeps over 8 hours every day lives shorter then a person who sleeps 6 hours a day. shorter sleep is better quality sleep, but too short is also bad.
the male is supposed to sleep 6.4 hours a night, and the female 7.4 . but these numbers are for an `average`person. i`m not sure if its different with bodybuilders.

If you are weight training would it be normal after a month to suddenly require more sleep? For muscle building etc?
I was so energized when I initially started this new program. After about a month I started feeling tired again about halfway through the day...my eating habits are getting better and cleaner every week, and the workout level has increased a little but not alot.
I am hoping that this is just my body's way of saying it needs more rest to build....
I normally fall asleep while watching T.V between 8 and 9, and get up at 6. Ideally I would like to be going to bed at 10, and getting up at 6 - but I never seem to make it.
Any suggestions?

Just to add to my post - I am 5'2, 120 pounds and have been eating between 1800 and 1900 calories per day (as recommended based on my activity level etc, and when I enter in my meals on the nutrition tracker here, I usually hit all my vitamin and nutirent intakes required for the day)

I'd first look at caloric intake, it may be low... Though you appear to be within a low-normal range for your bodyweight.

Second would be to take 3 days off and see how you felt. You might just be worn out, overreaching a little.

Also, if your falling asleep with the TV on the your sleep quality will suffer, even if you don't notice it. Make sure to set a sleep timer on the TV.

Finally, do you get tired at the same time every day, or the same amount of time after a certain meal?

I thought about taking a few days off
1. Because the last thing I want to do is over do it, and 2. Because I keep hearing about how you need to give your body a break to build.

I have considered that the 2 or 3 nights a week that I fall asleep in front of the T.V. are not high quality.

Thanks for the input - I think I will work on the quality issue first (make sure that once the kids are in bed - I will take a book to bed so that my downtime starts and finishes in the right spot....lol)

If that doesn't help in the next few days, I will take a few days off to re-coup.
