I ready Shawn Phillips book and the body-for-life book, and they promoted high intensity interval training during cardio........which is like sprinting for a minute 10 times and resting in between. Total time is 20 minutes max for cardio. I talked to my fitness trainer about this and she recommends 30-60 minutes of good cardio training 3-4 times a week. She says the HIIT workout promotes anaerobic exercise and doesnt do you any good. What's the deal with this?

I think she is wrong. HIIT cardio has very advantageous promotions on metabolism that last for much longer than conventional cardio.

What are your goals?
HIIT is absolutely brilliant for fat loss. You boost up the metabolism for hours after the training and it's never boring like other cardio sometimes is.
Yes it's aerobic AND anaerobic training in the same time and that's excactly why it's so efficient!

I would sincerely ahve to disagree with your fitness trainer and the only reason i would think she views it that way is cause she hasn't done it herself. I have done it and lost so much weight and toned up from that type of cardio only as with the conventional cardio.

Find a new trainer!
Also 60 minutes is way to much.

Yep, she's silly. Why do you think football and basketball players have been running sprints for the longets time. Once the weather warms up, I'll get back in to 100 yard sprints to improve my cardio and leg strength.
I've also read about the evils of "jogging" for an hour a couple times a week. Bad on knees, and bad on testosterone.

Anaerobic training is how some of the best power and endurance atheletes train. Lance Armstrong uses an interval program for the bulk of his work and you can see how well it works for him. Even my high school track coaches had distance runners training using interval type training. I also agree with Carivan, 60 minutes is too long unless you are an endurance athelete. Your calorie burning effects diminish quickly after 30 minutes. I must say, calling interval training 'no good' is probably one of the most atrociously poor statements I've ever heard made by a trainer, some who's supposed to know something about sport.
