Ok ladies (and the few men that come over this way...though after this post you may reconsider...) -

Problem. Rash on my butt/top of back of the legs. Looks like heat rash? Little red bumps - almost like pimples, but not. Definitely flares up after spinning class or biking, so that's why I'm going with heat rash. Not just when biking though - pretty much any time I'm sweating. But unlike heat rash (I think), it doesn't go away when I'm cooled down.

What I've tried -
exfoliation
washing my a$$ with my face wash
baby powder (messy with bike shorts!)
hydrocortizone cream
rubbing alcohol

I use fragrance-free/dye-free laundry detergent and don't use dryer sheets.

Help! This is super embarrassing - I've been forced to wear shorts over my bikini.

Any ideas?!?

I used to get the same thing when I was younger. Try using baby powder to help absorb all of the oil your skin gives out after sweating.

I've seen this on several occasions with women who wear shorts that are polyester or polyester blend when they active. The heat and sweat generated by your body creates almost a "cheese-grater" effect on the skin. With some of the above mentioned suggestions, try a plain cotton shorts.

Don't over exfoliate...that could make things worse.

Try the desitin (spelling?) that they use for baby diaper rash. It might help.

I agree with Michael. Synthetic fabrics and sweat don't mix. Cotton rules. Also, even though you said you use a dye free/fragrence free laundry detergent (not Tide I hope) you might try washing your workout things in an even milder soap for a while and see if that helps.

I'm jumping in with AZ and Rev, I bet the fabric's the culprit. Also your skin may be getting more irritated by all the treatments. The alcohol, face wash (I'm assuming this is a medicated face wash) and scrubbing could all be making it worse and some types of dermatitis can actually get worse w/ hydrocortisone. Maybe just letting it breathe when you're at home would help, instead of trying a heavy cream.

Ok, so my workout shorts (that I love and have like 4 pairs of) are 50/50 cotton/polyester. :(

I'll have to look for some 100% cotton shorts - or maybe that dri-fit material? I have some shirts made out of that for running and it seems to breathe really well & dry fast - any ideas?

Victoria - you're right about not using Tide. That sutff is way too harsh. I'm using All Free & Clear. I don't think it's related to the detergent b/c I don't have any rashes around my sports bra - another sweaty/fabric covered area.

I tried some of the Destin last night. Messy as all get out, but it did seem to decrease the redness and leave a film on my skin which could help if I'm sweating.

Jessica has a point though about letting it be for a while...

So my tasks for this weekend -
find new shorts
let skin breathe
get Body Glide (lube a lot of runners use for long distances) for biking

Thank you!

ok, so this is like way late, but i've had a similar problem and mine has cleared up quite a bit. i started wearing boxers instead of regular underwear, and while i know that sounds odd, it lets your skin breathe all day instead of just when you're at home. also use baby powder on the affected area, it helps dry out the skin. it takes a while to make it go away completely, but it's worth it!

This is probably a stupid question to ask, but it worth it!! I ride mountain bike for more then 10 years now, and yes I still see people wearing underwear under their "bike shorts" I don't know the word in english :(
If it 's the case... that is your problem, if not, you can go see the dermatologist !!
But I know you already thought of that!!

Wash your workout clothes in very hot water. They may have some bacteria left from previous use. (this is quite common when you think your clothes smell nice and clean but may not be as clean as thought) Use unscented and undyed laundry detergent.
