I enjoy a 6 pac of canadian beer every weekend with friends. The thing is I am a hardgainer and am following a strict diet.
Could this amount of beer slow down my progress alot? or do i have nothing to worry about?? ,rob |

Above all, it's about calories my friend. Figure out your daily calorie max for your goal (E.g. say your basal metabolic rate burns 1700 calories a day at rest, but you are moderately active and burning truly 2475 calories per day, and you want to strictly maintain your weight, then you don't go over 2475 calories in a day) and stick to it.
However, as a modified version of the Body for Life plan, my diet allows one cheat day per week wherein you can eat (or drink) anything and everything. I've come down from 252lbs to 182lbs, and now back up to 193 lbs. From this point forward, I will not mind gaining weight as long as the six pack is still visible (a good sign that all the weight is coming from muscle) but my daily caloric intake is 2550 calories. Anyhoo, bottom line is a six pack (say 230 calories per beer) costs you 1380 calories in a sitting; you have to decide if it's worth it. -------------- --There are no versions of the truth.-- Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park II |

Hehe, I don't know what kind of ultra high calorie beer you drink... but 230 cal per beer is a bit high.
Now, I am not sticking up for beer or anything. The stuff is awful if your trying to diet, but typically a 5% beer has aboput 145 calories per can (which is still very high anways)... About the same as a can of soda. Some of the darker beers probably have higher calorie count though... But yes! Beer will slow down your progress a lot. Your body doesn't know what to do with the alcohol so it stores it as fat. Also the alcohol pushes out important nutrients blah blah blah. Its just not good for you if your training. Then again, I do the same thing you do. Damned weekends. -------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. Beer.....I hate it because I luv it. Beer in moderation is ok. Just remember that alcohol in any form is empty calories. Meaning your body doesn't recognise the alcohol (foreign substance), doesn't know what to do with it, and stores it as fat.-------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

My problem was never the calories in one beer. It was the calories of...oh, let's say....12 beers (or more) Had to give em up.

Power RAck? That must be to put the beer on! LOL
If you have some acidofolous (spelling) before drinking or heading to a party, it helps digest the alcohol, thus making the after affects easier to handle. -------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

I was told taking a vitamin B before drinking helps your body cope with the alcohol better and therefore prevents a hangover.
I don't know how much truth there is to this... Maybe I should do some scientific research... Using myself as the test subject. Its going to be tough, but its all in the name of science. I love beer. Fortunately for me I get buzzed off one so I rearely ever have more than a couple 'cause that would be asking for trouble if I did. I also plan for it calorie wise. When I get home I have a glass of water with aspirin or alka selter.

i have another quick question-- will alcohol stop muscle growth? or is it just the nutrition factor (calories and carbs, etc.) that affects your body?
Thanks, Rob |

Good question oh_rob...unless you are an alcoholic, I wouldn't worry. I'm pretty sure alcohol can be catabolic though.-------------- OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES, EVERYONES GOT ONE. NOW, SHUT-UP AND GROW!!! |

"Alcohol decreases the secretion of growth hormone while lengthening recovery time. It has even been shown to shrink the muscle fibers of alcoholics. I f you frequently use alcohol, cutting back on your consumption will produce a more anabolic environment for muscle growth."
50 ways to build muscle fast, Dave Tuttle, avery press One or two drinks occasionally won't have such a big impact, but saving up for the weekend and drinking 6-12 beers or mixed drinks has been shown to have a larger negative impact than a drink a day. Alcohol slows down your metabolism and your body proiritizes breaking down the alcohol over quality nutrients, more calories get stored as fat while your liver tries to deal with the toxins - which will be nasty down the road when your dip into those toxic bodyfat stores. Ever notice how you will get a cold when you up your program intensity and start dropping bodyfat? The thing I notice most about drinking versus not drimking is my energy levels and commitment to my program are so much greater when I go without drinking. Even a few berrs on the weekend lower my energy for a few days and affect the power of my workouts. Alcohol also disrupts your sleep cycle, and when you sleep is when you are growing. So you can see how that could be a problem. Unless you are a competitive athlete, or are trying to prioritize your health/physique above everything else, you probably don't have to worry. But if you are trying to gain and compete or make fitness your lifestyle, there are better ways to spend your weekends. Good Luck! -------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort.
