500 situps a day. Is that sufficient for abs? I diet and do cardio as well. I also lift 5 days a week. The only problem I have had is BEER. I know that is what is hindering my abs from showing. I stopped drinking. I just want to know a ballpark figure for the number of situps I should do to really form my abs. I do variations of situps, they are not all just crunches. So what do you guys think?

"abs are not made in the gym but in the kitchen" BB1fit. He said that a long time ago here and it still is true, until you lose body fat (stop with the beer!) you will not see your abs like you want to.

Not to mention you'd be much better off adding resistance to your ab workout and doing much lower reps. 15-20 reps with resistance would be a lot better than with none.

You are right about the diet. I think my main problem is the beer. A friend of mine works out with a well known trainer around here and he starts him out with 500 situps of different variations before they hit the weights every time. Of course his diet plan is also a major part of his training.

All he is doing(the trainer) is trying to show he knows something, in other words earn his money. 500 situps will do nothing for your abs, no matter what angle you do them from. The only reason it is working if it is is simply he is burning tons of calories with all that work, and with added in caloric deficit, you will see results.

These trainers these days in the cookie cutter gyms are a dime a dozen. Each has to try to show something different to get/keep a client, when in reality, you can do the same thing much more efficiently with proper training and diet. Hundreds of reps will no more build abs than...well, you finish the post.
