i have been lifting heavy and put on some mass the past 4 weeks and have gained 5 pounds and lost a quarter inch in the gut is it because my muscle is burning more fat and is the 5 lbs muscle i was just curious....

With more lean muscle mass your body has a higher need for total daily calorie intake.
That's another great thing with muscles..... One can eat a lot more than the fat neighboor next door!! (o;

Yeah and gaining just 3 pounds of muscle can increase your resting metebolic rate by 7%. so watch out jnellie cause you keep it up you wont have any fat!!
