Drill instructors are the men and women in the armed forces who are primarily in charge of the safety and preparation of the United States military troops, as they go through their basic and advanced training. It is their mission to make sure the youngsters (and sometimes a little older folks) are ready to defend their country, and stay alive as long as possible. It is a very difficult and rewarding job.
I have had more than a few DI's in my face. It is exhilirating. Drop private! Front Back GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I am not A SIR!
Anyways, they usually have the large round hats. In fact, there is a profile here on ft which includes a drill instructor's pic.

True Timothy, ture. I admit, when I got to basic training and was thrown off the bus in front of my barracks and my stuff was tossed in a heap and I was put in the lean and rest while black boots were inches from my nose, I was a tad intimidated. But, I was lucky to have been yelled at alot growing up and it never really phased me beyond that. I found it exhilirating more when the praise came than the admonishment, but it was all good. I loved it!
I was in ROTC for three years at James Madison University and Valley Forge Military College. Do you have any plans to become an officer? I was a pt god back then. The only thing that prepared me for maxing the pt test was pt'ing ALL the time. It took me years, and years, but then it came easy. I couldn't weight train and pt, took too much outta me, but that was me. Keep it up and if you have any specific questions about anything ROTC, Active Duty, or PT, let me know. If I can't answer it someone here will or I will email some of my friends currently on active duty.
Good luck.
Oh, are you in Army ROTC, NAVY? What?

Navy ROTC

Hopefully I'll make it and get my commission. I wasn't the best PT-er last year, but I came to ft last winter and learned a whole lot, started training more on my own and even with the Marines sometimes. If I keep it up, I can be a PT master too, lol.

As far as DI's go.. yeah, I never experienced anything like that before, so I just a little intimidated. But after a while it wasn't so bad. Plus, holding yourself in a halfway pushup position really gives your tris a good burn, lol

Good luck Timmy. Eat loads, pack on the lean weight and your strength will follow. I was pretty lean back then. When I was getting consistent 300 pt scores, I was about 155 pounds. I couldn't keep any weight on, but I ate alot. It was really conditioning my body that did it, and lots of pt. I would not recommend trying to lift to get bigger. I don't know what you are doing, but the pt takes stamina and bulking won't help. Lots of reps my brother. You'll get the commission, I mean, if you graduate in 4-4.5 years, and can pass the pt test you'll get it. Good luck.

Congratulations Lisa, how exciting!!!!!!!!!
Now drop and give me 100 4 count body builders.

Timmy, keep your schooling and PT up and I am sure you will make a fine Navy Officer. Being in the Navy myself, I can say it is very rewarding and you will accomplish more then you can ever dream of.

:) Melissa

Ischjli, that was a great explanation of a drill instructor. This is a big move in my career and I thank you for all of your support. I will try and stay in touch while at school, but I will probably be too tired to be on as much as now. Hopefully for the weekends I can log on for a few minutes.

You are welcome Philia. You go Lisa! That is wonderful, I mean not everyone can hack it and you leave a lifelong impression on the men and women you instruct. My brother in law just completed basic and AIT in Missouri early this month. He is now in Airborne school in GA. All he talks about are his DI's. He wants to be one. And a few have called him to check on him. Huge responsibility, I commend you.

Good Luck Lisa, thats a real honor in the Marines. They taught me while in the Army to cuss at an inanimate object (recruit) until it moved. Scientists call this Telekinesis, the US Army calls it Pizzed Off. ROTFL

Funny that you say that Lisa, cause of course most the the Drill Instructors I've met including my old Drill Instructors back in Basic Training never followed that rule anyway. What was funny was that the only time you'd ever see them watch their mouths was when the chaplain came around..hehe. Anyway, I really hope you enjoy DI School, hope it all works out for you.

Can't cuss in the military anymore??? Who's military is that? The army taught me to swear like a machine gun run amok. And I was a CW4. "Well Chief, thats why you are a warrant, and not a commissioned officer. Its that G.D. mouth of yours that spews shxt like a broken sewer main! When the fxck are you going to learn when to shut it? And while we are on the subject of closures, try to keep that fly of yours shut along with your sewer!" That was a butt chewing from a B.G. after I answered by endorsment allegations about my lewd conduct in an officers club. Ahh the memories. Political correctness has taken the starch out of my beloved military. Sooner or later we will be sending nasty notes to each other instead of pulling triggers.

My Drill Sgt in 1966 in Fort Benning had breath that would strip paint, an Alabama accent, a 1000 word not stop cussing vocabulary and a 50 caliber swagger stick. All of which hit every part of the human anatomy at the least imagined infraction in his narrow world. For the rest of my military career I looked for that miserable SOB. Not to shoot him, oh no, I wanted to insert a Lake City Match .308 in his head by hand. Yes I know that I carry grudges to the Nth, its what I do best.

I have the new order that says we can't swear. Recruits aren't worth me getting in trouble for. It will be hard- although I can't remember my drill instructors cussing but boy did they use strong language. I guess I will learn all about that here in a couple of months.

Nellie, I will be going to school in Parris Island, South Carolina and that is where I will be a D.I. Can't wait. Just found out that there are 18 total females going to this class-- that's a lot. We only have 3 companies with 2 platoons each and 3 D.I.'s per platoon. It is going to be fun.

Lisa you are in Okinawa right now is that correct. I am hoping to visit there someday I have seen a lot of pictures and they looked great. I would love to study Martial arts there with some of the grand masters. How long have you been stationed in Okinawa, have you done very much training with the local people there. Sounds like you cant wait for DI school good luck to you.

I have been here for 2 1/2 years. I really haven't done any training with the local nationals yet. I am learning Okinawan dancing right now for a festival. It is really cute.
