My example is the Smith machine for squats. If I have to lift the amount of free weights off the ground, then over my head and onto my shoulders, I've already spent a lot of energy. So, on the next set, I probably will have a hard time going heavier.

On the other hand, on the smith machine, the weights are already propped up for me and all I have to do is go under the bar, take the bar off the hooks and do the squats.

robert's right. but also because of the auxillary muscles and connective tissues. on a machine, generally the only thing doing the work are the targeted muscles, whereas with free weights, you have to deal with balance, etc., so more muscles are called into play. a bench machine, for example, functions basically on one vector - up and down. with free weights, however, you have up and down, front and back, side to side, etc.

Right Michael, also remember that most machines have a pulley system, while each of them are different they do take soem of the weight off. So that when you do say cabel curls and can get 120 while with a bar only 70 you gotta know that the machine took some off for you.

Why wouldn't you grow using machines? Your still moving weight around.. maybe an inflated figure and with stricter form.. but still i've gotten sore or a good workout from various machines in the gym I goto.. rob/rev/etc explained them pretty well and I do usually favor freeweights but still I don't usually ignore machines as for some machines I think I can get a better workout done... also lets you vary a little more rather then sticking w/ the same stuff all the time...
