Forgive me if I sound ignorant. I am new to this site and the whole "fitness" area. What does "cycling carbs" mean and what are the benefits?

Whoa i'm not sure.. i think.. THINK it probably means you use a lot of them in the off season to help you increase the intensity of your workouts and then decrease them when your cutting to help you lose as much bf as possible w/o losing muscle... that even sounds wrong to me.. better wait for rp/philla/etc on this one...

Take a look at a post I started in Female Discussions named Weight a Minute

It means two three days with a low carb intake (ex 50-100gr) and one two day with carb ups (200-300gr).
This is just an example, everybody is different.
We often use this for contest preparation.

Thanks for the info! I checked out the post by Lumina and found it very informative. Lumina, good luck with the cycling plan! Let me know how it works out. I seem to be stuck in a rut as far as losing body fat. I've been thinking of doing something like cycling carbs to see if I could get my metabolism jump started again.

It is going okay so far, but the holiday (the 4th) and my brother's b-day (the 7th) have thrown me off a bit. I thought the low carb days would be killer, but it's not a big deal at all and it seems like I don't have cravings for sweet things on those days. Here is a link to the carb cycle diet I am trying: www.ultralab.com/cutting_up.html

Thanks for the link!
One more question. If low carb days are better for burning fat because your body reaches a state of ketosis, why not keep it like that all the time? Why start up on the carbs again? Personally, I find that eating too many carbs makes me feel very sluggish.

you need some carbs( more than whne you cut them down) for energy to run your body.

sfurtado - if you stay on really low carb all the time, your body will start burning muscle. The idea is to keep your body from going into starvation mode and slamming the metabolism to a halt.

Because you'll get very tired and veeery grumpy without your carbs!!!!! Your body and mind need it so keep doing your carb ups (keep it reasonable thou)

So what is considered a reasonable amount of carbs? 200-300g a day? What type of carbs are we talking about ie. rice, pasta, potatoes? or vegetables? I was always told that if I ate stuff like rice and pasta, I would gain weight.
