They say it's really good to take time off to help your body recover, so when you lift again you have increased intensity. I recently read an article that said for serious lifters they should take six weeks a year and only do light weights. I think that would be ideal, but I don't know beyod that. I think the biggest risk is not picking up the weights again.

Yes, it is good if you take a few days off to fully recuperate. Besides, if you signed up for the 12-week mass program, there is a 2-week rest period at the end. Remember, you grow muscles while you rest...

For how long do you want to stop working with the weights? As the guys say, it's okey to take 1-2 weeks off, but not more than that (in one row).
Cardio is great to loose weight and burn calories, but cardio ONLY will never really be able to shape you a beautiful body..... Gotta have the two of them.

I've read something similar to what Philia said.
"If you look like a pear and only do cardio, you'll only look like a smaller pear" You have to weight train to sculpture your body.
